Anti-inflammatory effects of novel polygonum multiflorum compound via inhibiting NF- κB/MAPK and upregulating the Nrf2 pathways in LPS-stimulated microglia
Publication date: 9 June 2017 Source:Neuroscience Letters, Volume 651 Author(s): Sun Young Park, Mei Ling Jin, Nam Jun Kang, Geuntae Park, Young-Whan Choi The incorporation of Polygonum multiflorum into the diet can result in anti-aging effects owing to its wide range of biological and pharmaceutical properties. We investigated the anti-neuroinflammatory properties of CRPE56IGIH isolated from P. multiflorum by focusing on its role in the induction of phase II antioxidant enzymes and the modulation of upstream signaling pathways. In microglia, CRPE56IGIH significantly inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated nit...

Antiaging and Anxiolytic Effects of Combinatory Formulas Based on Four Medicinal Herbs.
The objective of the present study was to search for medicinal-herb combinations based on Radix Bupleurum chinense DC ("B"), Rhizoma Corydalis yanhusuo WT Wang ("Y"), Caulis Polygonum multiflorum Thunb ("P"), and Flos Albizia julibrissin Durazz ("A") for antiaging, anxiolytic, and sedative effects. Application of the D-galactose induced accelerated-aging model employing male ICR mice showed that oral administration of some combinations of B, Y, P, and A significantly improved spatial memory in Y-maze test and reduced brain levels of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 based on immunoassays and oxidative stress marke...

Polygonum multiflorum Radix extract protects human foreskin melanocytes from oxidative stress in  vitro and potentiates hair follicle pigmentation ex vivo
ConclusionPolygonum multiflorum Radix extract protects in vitro primary human foreskin melanocytes from the deleterious effects of H2O2 exposure and improves pigmentation within ex vivo human hair follicles, demonstrating the utility of Polygonum multiflorum Radix extract as a potential active ingredient for the protection of melanocytes against premature death. This data provides in vitro mechanistic evidence consistent with existing in vivo studies for the use of Polygonum multiflorum Radix extract as a strategy for the prevention of oxidative stress‐induced hair greying, in line with traditional Polygonum multiflo...

Anti-inflammatory effects of trans-2,3,5,4 ′-tetrahydroxystilbene 2-O-β-glucopyranoside (THSG) from Polygonum multiflorum (PM) and hypoglycemic effect of cis-THSG enriched PM extract
Publication date: July 2017 Source:Journal of Functional Foods, Volume 34 Author(s): Wenping Tang, Shiming Li, Yue Liu, Mou-Tuan Huang, Chi-Tang Ho Polygonum multiflorum (PM) has been used as a tonic edible plant and is a popular anti-ageing dietary supplement. Trans-2,3,5,4′-tetrahydroxystilbene 2-O-β-glucopyranoside (trans-THSG) is the major active compound in PM. It was found to have potent anti-inflammatory effects in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells and in TPA-induced mouse ear edema model. Research in the significance and rational of traditional process of post-harvested PM has been neglected. With the aid of mod...

The assessment of the chronic hepatotoxicity induced by Polygoni Multiflori Radix in rats: A pilot study by using untargeted metabolomics method
Conclusion Our data has further suggested that liver damage resulting from HSW-Ex consumption is dosage dependent in rats. It is possible that disruption in amino acid and energy metabolism might lead to subsequent oxidative damage in the liver of rats. Because the clinic practice often use low dose in a short time, therefore HSW usage in TCM still keep safe currently, but we present a warning to the clinical doctors and make them has some concern about high dose of HSW usage in a long term that has potential danger to damage liver. Screening for main components associated with the idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity of a tonic herb, Polygonum multiflorum
AbstractThe main constituents of a typical medicinal herb,Polygonum multiflorum (Heshouwu in Chinese), that induces idiosyncratic liver injury remain unclear. Our previous work has shown that cotreatment with a nontoxic dose of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and therapeutic dose of Heshouwu can induce liver injury in rats, whereas the solo treatment cannot induce observable injury. In the present work, using the constituent “knock-out” and “knock-in” strategy, we found that the ethyl acetate (EA) extract of Heshouwu displayed comparable idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity to the whole extract in LPS-treated rats. Results indica...

A New Strategy for Quality Evaluation and Identification of Representative Chemical Components in Polygonum multiflorum Thunb.
Authors: Li YX, Gong XH, Liu MC, Peng C, Li P, Wang YT Abstract Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. (HSW) is widely used as herb medicine and health food additive. Recently, a series of HSW-induced hepatotoxicities have been reported and many studies have been carried out to investigate it. But contradictory conclusions were drawn that might be caused by the inconsistent quality of market decoction pieces. Therefore, the HSW decoction pieces quality was evaluated with a developed novel method in the paper. 25 batches of raw HSW (RHSW) and 21 batches of processed HSW (PHSW) samples were purchased from different pr...

Anti ‐diabetic activities of cis‐ and trans‐2,3,5,4′‐tetrahydroxystilbene 2‐O‐β‐glucopyranoside from Polygonum multiflorum
Conclusion: Cis‐THSG can be an enriched bioactive ingredient in PM roots from post‐processing and is significantly more effective against hyperglycemia than trans‐THSG. One of the effective pathways was through inhibition of PEPCK. Trans‐2,3,5,4′‐tetrahydroxystilbene 2‐O‐β‐glucopyranoside (trans‐THSG) is the major active compound in a medicinal food in Asia, Polygonum multiflorum (PM), and it can be induced through UV light to cis‐THSG, which mimics the traditional process of PM. Cis‐THSG can be an enriched bioactive ingredient in PM roots from post‐processing after PM harvesting and is signific...
