Effects of tetrahydroxy stilbene glycoside derivatives on free radical damage and apoptosis in APP695V717I transgenic mice
Redox Rep. 2023 Dec;28(1):2259246. doi: 10.1080/13510002.2023.2259246. Epub 2023 Sep 20.ABSTRACTMitochondrial dysfunction leading to overproduction of oxygen free radicals is an important event in the development of Alzheimer's disease. Tetrahydroxy stilbene glycoside (TSG) is one of the main effective components of Polygonum multiflorum and has a certain free radical scavenging effect. We synthesized tetrahydroxy stilbene glycoside derivatives (Mito-TSGs) that can cross the mitochondrial membrane and may provide effective protection against Alzheimer's disease. This experiment investigates the protective mechanism of tetr...

Hydrophobic constituents of Polygonum multiflorum roots promote renal erythropoietin expression in healthy mice
AbstractThe roots ofPolygonum multiflorum Thunberg (Polygonaceae) are used as a crude drugKashu that is considered to improveblood deficiency based on a Kampo concept.Kashu has been included in Kampo formulas, such asTokiinshi, which is used to treat eczema and dermatitis with itchiness by inhibiting inflammation and facilitating blood circulation in the skin. However, the effects of P. multiflorum roots on erythropoiesis are unclear. Previously, we isolated six phenolic constituents from an ethyl acetate (EtOAc)-soluble fraction ofP. multiflorum root extract and identified them as (E)-2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O- β...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 6004: Phenolic Compounds and Antioxidant and Anti-Enzymatic Activities of Selected Adaptogenic Plants from South America, Asia, and Africa
lik Aneta A. Ptaszyńska Daniel Załuski Despite the fact that there are many studies related to the adaptogenic and pro-healthy activities of plant-based compounds, there are some adaptogenic plants whose activities are not fully known, especially those coming from the wild regions of Asia, Africa, and South America. The aim of these studies was to examine the contents of non-nutritional compounds, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids in ten adaptogenic species (Astragalus membranaceus (AM), Uncaria rhynchophylla (UR), Polygonum multiflorum (PM), Angelica sinensis (AS), Andrographis paniculatea (AP)...

Tetrahydroxy stilbene glycoside ameliorates neuroinflammation for Alzheimer's disease via cGAS-STING
In this study, we demonstrated that AD transgenic mice exhibited cognitive deficits accompanied by the elevated serum and brain inflammation. Treating with a natural active ingredient tetrahydroxy stilbene glucoside (TSG) from the Chinese herb Polygonum multiflorum that has been well known for its unique anti-aging effect, learning-memory ability of AD mice was distinctly improved. Meanwhile, it was observed that the expressions of serum inflammatory cytokines and the activation of microglia in cerebral cortex and hippocampus were suppressed after TSG treatment, which was probably attributable to the decrease of cyclic GMP...

Induction of Nrf2-EpRE-mediated gene expression by hydroxyanthraquinones present in extracts from traditional Chinese medicine and herbs
In conclusion, different hydroxyanthraquinones have different potencies of Nrf2 activation. The Nrf2 activation by extracts from TCM and herbs can be partially explained by the presence of selected hydroxyanthraquinones.PMID:37116774 | DOI:10.1016/j.fct.2023.113802 (Source: Food and Chemical Toxicology)

Dianthrone derivatives from Polygonum multiflorum Thunb: Anti-diabetic activity, structure-activity relationships (SARs), and mode of action
In this study, the anti-diabetic activity of dianthrone derivatives from Polygonum multiflorum Thunb., as well as the structure-activity relationships, mechanism, and molecular docking were explored. Among these analogs, trans-emodin dianthrone (compound 1) enhances insulin sensitivity by upregulating the insulin signaling pathway in HepG2 cells and displays considerable anti-diabetic activity in db/db mice. By using photoaffinity labeling and mass spectrometry-based proteomics, we discovered that trans-emodin dianthrone (compound 1) may bind to PTP1B allosteric pocket at helix α6/α7, which provides fresh insight into th...

Comparisons of physicochemical features and hepatoprotective potentials of unprocessed and processed polysaccharides from Polygonum multiflorum Thunb
This study also proposed a new hypothesis that the significant increase of polysaccharide content in processed PM may be another reason that the product PM causes less liver injury.PMID:36871693 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.123901 (Source: International Journal of Biological Macromolecules)

Effect of Chinese herbal medicine therapy on risks of all-cause mortality, infections, parasites, and circulatory-related mortality in HIV/AIDS patients with neurological diseases
Discussion: Results showed that CHM users had a 70% lower risk of all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 0.30, 95% confidence interval (CI):0.16–0.58, p < 0.001) (p = 0.0007, log-rank test). Furthermore, CHM users had an 86% lower risk of infections, parasites, and circulatory-related mortality (aHR = 0.14, 95% confidence interval (CI):0.04–0.46, p = 0.001) (p = 0.0010, log-rank test). Association rule mining and network analysis showed that two CHM clusters were important for patients with neurological diseases. In the first CHM cluster, Huang Qin (HQ; root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi), Gan Cao (G...
