Causal Association Between Diabetes, Body Mass Index and Lichen Sclerosus: A Bidirectional Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Analysis
CONCLUSION: This MR analysis demonstrated no significant causal relationship between DM and BMI with LS in both directions, which contradicts previous observational studies reporting a positive association. Potential confounding factors may contribute to previously observed associations, and further research is necessary.PMID:38689755 | PMC:PMC11060172 | DOI:10.2147/CCID.S450399 (Source: Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology)

Genetic and Lifestyle Risk Factors of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease and Its Relationship with Premature Coronary Artery Disease: A Study on the Pars Cohort
CONCLUSION: Our study found that consuming opium decreases the likelihood of MAFLD in CAD patients, since these patients have decreased appetite and lower body mass index (BMI). On the other hand, female gender, having diabetes, high waist circumference, high triglyceride levels, and high ALT levels increase the probability of MAFLD in CAD patients.PMID:38690791 | DOI:10.34172/aim.2024.36 (Source: Archives of Iranian Medicine)

Widespread Adoption of Microincision Vitrectomy Surgery Improves Visual Outcomes in Endogenous Endophthalmitis with Poor Initial Vision: A 21-Year Experience in Taiwan
CONCLUSION: In endogenous endophthalmitis patients presenting with poor initial visual acuity, vitrectomy was a better visual prognostic factor. MIVS has allowed more patients to undergo vitrectomy and improved visual outcomes.PMID:38691837 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2338272 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)

< em > Klebsiella pneumoniae < /em > infections after liver transplantation: Drug resistance and distribution of pathogens, risk factors, and influence on outcomes
CONCLUSION: KPIs occur frequently and rapidly after LT. Risk factors include female sex, pre-LT diabetes, increased post-LT ALT levels, and urethral catheter duration. CRKP infections, and not KPIs, affect mortality.PMID:38689752 | PMC:PMC11056902 | DOI:10.4254/wjh.v16.i4.612 (Source: World Journal of Hepatology)

Genome-wide analysis of two different regions of brain reveals the molecular changes of fertility related genes in rln3a < sup > -/- < /sup > mutants in male Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
Gen Comp Endocrinol. 2024 Apr 29:114543. doi: 10.1016/j.ygcen.2024.114543. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRelaxin3 (rln3) has been associated with various emotional and cognitive processes, including stress, anxiety, learning, memory, motivational behavior, and circadian rhythm. Notably, previous report revealed that Rln3a played an indispensable role in testicular development and male fertility in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. We found that Rln3a is expressed exclusively in the diencephalon* (Di*) of the brain. Deficiency of Rln3a resulted in a si...

Development of an Improved Adenovirus Vector and Its Application to the Treatment of Lifestyle-Related Diseases
Biol Pharm Bull. 2024;47(5):886-894. doi: 10.1248/bpb.b23-00837.ABSTRACTThe number of patients with lifestyle-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has continued to increase worldwide. Therefore, development of innovative therapeutic methods targeting lifestyle-related diseases is required. Gene therapy has attracted considerable attention as an advanced medical treatment. Safe and high-performance vectors are essential for the practical application of gene therapy. Replicati...

Autonomic Dysfunction from Diagnosis to Treatment
Prim Care. 2024 Jun;51(2):359-373. doi: 10.1016/j.pop.2024.02.006. Epub 2024 Mar 20.ABSTRACTAutonomic disorders can present with hypotension, gastrointestinal, genitourinary symptoms, and heat intolerance. Diabetes is the most common causes of autonomic failure, and management should focus on glucose control to prevent developing autonomic symptoms. The most prevalent cause of dysautonomia, or autonomic dysfunction, is Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Autonomic testing characterizes causes for nonspecific symptoms but is not necessary in patients with classic presentations. Treatment for autonomic dysfunct...

Home blood pressure measurement self-reporting in real-life practices using the Hy-Result app: self-monitoring and digital pathway
CONCLUSIONS: Our real-life study shows that 90% of the HBPM reports include the required minimum number of BP readings to allow the calculation of a reliable average among whom 40% have uncontrolled BP levels. The self-management Hy-Result web app demonstrates significant potential for inclusion in the patient care process and reinforces the patient's engagement to independently monitor and self-reported their BP. When the mean BP is not within the recommended range, the users were automatically prompted by text messages to seek medical advice by the software. Further research should determine the extent to which users adh...

Circulating interleukin 17A and other inflammatory proteins may predict cardiovascular disease in early rheumatoid arthritis
CONCLUSION: Circulating IL-17A at RA diagnosis predicted future CVD, although we cannot exclude that this finding is due to multiple testing. The association was independent of traditional CVD risk factors, and of ESR at the time of diagnosis. Furthermore, OPG may be a predictor of CVD. We also identified some novel potential biomarkers for CVD in RA.PMID:38692670 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.2023-1078 (Source: J Rheumatol)

Elevated cardiovascular risk and acute events in hospitalized colon cancer survivors: A decade-apart study of two nationwide cohorts
CONCLUSION: Colon cancer survivors hospitalized 10 years apart in the United States showed an increased CVD risk with an increased risk of acute cardiovascular events (stroke 28%, PE 47%, arrhythmia 41%, and cardiac arrest 63%). It is vital to regularly screen colon cancer survivors with concomitant CVD risk factors to curtail long-term cardiovascular complications.PMID:38689632 | PMC:PMC11056864 | DOI:10.5306/wjco.v15.i4.548 (Source: Clinical Colorectal Cancer)

Endothelial dysfunction in breast cancer survivors on aromatase inhibitors: changes over time
CONCLUSIONS: We hypothesize that long-term use of AI can lead to persistent endothelial dysfunction, and further investigation is necessary. In our study, patients were on AI for approximately 5-10 years. As a result, we do not have data on whether these changes, such as EndoPAT® ratio and the elasticity of small and large arterial, are reversible with discontinuation of AI. These findings set the stage for a larger study to more conclusively determine the association between AI exposure and cardiovascular outcomes. Further studies should evaluate for multivariate associations withmodifiable risk factors for CV disease.PM...

Adiposity, type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk: Use and abuse of the body mass index
Atherosclerosis. 2024 Apr 14:117546. doi: 10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2024.117546. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe worldwide prevalence of individuals with an elevated body weight has increased steadily over the past five decades. Billions of research dollars have been invested to improve our understanding of the causes and consequences of having an elevated body weight. All this knowledge has, however, failed to influence populational body weight trajectories of most countries around the world. Research on the definition of "obesity" has also evolved. Body mass index (BMI), the most commonly used tool to make its diagnosi...
