Circulating interleukin 17A and other inflammatory proteins may predict cardiovascular disease in early rheumatoid arthritis
CONCLUSION: Circulating IL-17A at RA diagnosis predicted future CVD, although we cannot exclude that this finding is due to multiple testing. The association was independent of traditional CVD risk factors, and of ESR at the time of diagnosis. Furthermore, OPG may be a predictor of CVD. We also identified some novel potential biomarkers for CVD in RA.PMID:38692670 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.2023-1078 (Source: Journal of Rheumatology)

Hyperglycemia impairs EAAT2 glutamate transporter trafficking and glutamate clearance in islets of Langerhans: implications for type 2 diabetes pathogenesis
Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab. 2024 May 1. doi: 10.1152/ajpendo.00069.2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPancreatic endocrine cells employ a sophisticated system of paracrine and autocrine signals to synchronize their activities, including glutamate which controls hormone release and β-cell viability by acting on glutamate receptors expressed by endocrine cells. We here investigate whether alteration of the Excitatory Amino Acid Transporter 2 (EAAT2), the major glutamate clearance system in the islet, may occur in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and contribute to β-cell dysfunction. Increased EAAT2 intracellular localiz...

Evidence-based screening, clinical care and health education recommendations for Alaska Native peoples with prediabetes living in southcentral Alaska: findings from the Alaska EARTH follow-up study
This study investigated how much of the recent increase in pre-DM identified among Alaska Native (AN) peoples living in urban southcentral Alaska may be due to changes in diagnostic methods. We used clinical and demographic data collected at baseline between 2004 and 2006 and at follow-up collected between 2015 and 2017 from the urban southcentral Alaska Education and Research Towards Health (EARTH) cohort. We used descriptive statistics and logistic regression to explore differences in demographic and clinical variables among the identified pre-DM groups. Of 388 participants in the follow-up study, 243 had A1c levels indi...

Causal Association Between Diabetes, Body Mass Index and Lichen Sclerosus: A Bidirectional Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Analysis
CONCLUSION: This MR analysis demonstrated no significant causal relationship between DM and BMI with LS in both directions, which contradicts previous observational studies reporting a positive association. Potential confounding factors may contribute to previously observed associations, and further research is necessary.PMID:38689755 | PMC:PMC11060172 | DOI:10.2147/CCID.S450399 (Source: Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology)

Genetic and Lifestyle Risk Factors of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease and Its Relationship with Premature Coronary Artery Disease: A Study on the Pars Cohort
CONCLUSION: Our study found that consuming opium decreases the likelihood of MAFLD in CAD patients, since these patients have decreased appetite and lower body mass index (BMI). On the other hand, female gender, having diabetes, high waist circumference, high triglyceride levels, and high ALT levels increase the probability of MAFLD in CAD patients.PMID:38690791 | DOI:10.34172/aim.2024.36 (Source: Archives of Iranian Medicine)

< em > Klebsiella pneumoniae < /em > infections after liver transplantation: Drug resistance and distribution of pathogens, risk factors, and influence on outcomes
CONCLUSION: KPIs occur frequently and rapidly after LT. Risk factors include female sex, pre-LT diabetes, increased post-LT ALT levels, and urethral catheter duration. CRKP infections, and not KPIs, affect mortality.PMID:38689752 | PMC:PMC11056902 | DOI:10.4254/wjh.v16.i4.612 (Source: World Journal of Hepatology)

Home blood pressure measurement self-reporting in real-life practices using the Hy-Result app: self-monitoring and digital pathway
CONCLUSIONS: Our real-life study shows that 90% of the HBPM reports include the required minimum number of BP readings to allow the calculation of a reliable average among whom 40% have uncontrolled BP levels. The self-management Hy-Result web app demonstrates significant potential for inclusion in the patient care process and reinforces the patient's engagement to independently monitor and self-reported their BP. When the mean BP is not within the recommended range, the users were automatically prompted by text messages to seek medical advice by the software. Further research should determine the extent to which users adh...

Mitochondrial antioxidant elamipretide improves learning and memory impairment induced by chronic sleep deprivation in mice
ConclusionTaken together, these results suggest that SS-31 could improve CSD-induced mitochondrial biogenesis dysfunction, inflammatory response, synaptic dysfunction, and cognitive impairment by increasing SIRT1 expression levels. (Source: Brain and Behavior)

Primary arthrodesis for diabetic ankle fractures using a modified retrograde femoral intramedullary locking nail combined with lateral plating, surgical technique, and early results of a pilot study
ConclusionUsing a modified femoral IMN combined with lateral plating is a promising technique to achieve ankle arthrodesis in diabetic patients with acute ankle fractures with acceptable outcomes; however, further studies with larger numbers are needed.Level of evidence: IV (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Robotic transversus abdominis release (TAR) for ventral hernia repairs is associated with low surgical site occurrence rates and length of stay despite increasing modifiable comorbidities
Conclusion2  + MCMs significantly increase the odds of SSO, specifically in patients who have a history of diabetes and obesity. However, the presence of any number of MCMs was not associated with increased odds of prolonged LOS. (Source: Hernia)

Impact of age and anterior fibromuscular stroma preservation on post-enucleation voided volume
ConclusionsThe study concludes that intentional preservation of AFS during prostate enucleation positively impacts early postoperative VVs, with limited improvement in older patients. These findings highlight the potential of AFS preservation not only in enhancing urinary outcomes post-surgery but also in shaping future BPH surgical procedures and research directions.
