Pets, obesity and nurses: surgical site infections in the community
Br J Community Nurs. 2024 May 2;29(5):248-250. doi: 10.12968/bjcn.2024.29.5.248.ABSTRACTMany surgical site infections (SSI) emerge after the patient is discharged from hospital. So, practice and district nurses should remain alert for SSIs and address modifiable risk factors, which include helping obese patients lose weight, optimising glucose control in people with diabetes and encouraging smoking cessation. Animals, including pets, are important reservoirs of resistant bacteria. By optimising SSI care, nurses can not only improve wound healing but also help preserve antibiotic efficacy.PMID:38701010 | DOI:10.12968/bjcn.2...

Delegation of insulin administration: a survey of community nursing teams in England
Br J Community Nurs. 2024 May 2;29(5):238-244. doi: 10.12968/bjcn.2024.29.5.238.ABSTRACTIn community nursing, the administration of insulin for people with type 2 diabetes can be delegated by registered nurses to healthcare support workers. Although a voluntary framework in England provides national guidance, little is known about its uptake. The project aim was to determine the roll-out, characteristics and support needs in relation to the delegation of insulin administration in community settings. An online survey was disseminated to community nursing services in England via social media and nursing networks. Of the 115 ...

Pediatric hypertension as an early manifestation of cardiovascular disease in children
J Bras Nefrol. 2024 May 3;46(4):e20230159. doi: 10.1590/2175-8239-JBN-2023-0159en. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTIn adults, cardiovascular events associated with arterial hypertension (AH) have a major impact on morbidity and mortality. In light of recent findings, AH in children has been interpreted as early cardiovascular disease (CVD), while exposure to CV risk factors in children proves to be a predictor of subclinical CVD in adults. The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association has recently updated the classifications for measuring blood pressure (BP) in adults and children. Primary AH in children is genera...

Metabolic Syndrome and the Risk of Kidney Stones: a Large-scale Cohort Study from 487,860 UK Biobank participants
CONCLUSION: Metabolic syndrome is a significant and independent risk factor for the development of kidney stones. This association suggests that kidney stones may represent a systemic disorder influenced by the interplay of various metabolic risk factors.PMID:38701346 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae295 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

The impact of systemic administration of polyphenols on periodontitis associated with diabetes mellitus: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the promising results observed in the included studies, the overall evidence supporting the positive effects of polyphenols on periodontal and diabetes mellitus status, along with their anti-inflammatory properties, remains inadequate.PMID:38700145 | DOI:10.2340/aos.v83.40484 (Source: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica)

Humoral Response After Two Doses of COVISHIELD < sup > TM < /sup > Vaccine in Patients Undergoing Maintenance Hemodialysis
CONCLUSION: In MHD patients, two doses of the COVISHIELDTM vaccine induced a substantial humoral response. Prior history of COVID-19 resulted in a higher antibody response. Thus, the COVISHIELDTM vaccine is efficacious and safe for use in patients with MHD. How to cite this article: Balwani MR, Pasari AS, Baw.ule C, et al. Glycemic Control and Mucormycosis during COVID-19 Pandemic in India a Study of Stage and Outcome
CONCLUSION: The study showed a positive correlation between the stage of mucormycosis and serum glycemic control markers at presentation. Clinicians must order blood sugar and HbA1c levels at presentation as cues for a better understanding of disease severity. A thorough clinical examination and history taking for patient risk factors predisposing to mucormycosis are also crucial since the presence of proptosis and coronary artery disease are significantly correlated with the mortality outcomes. The extent of poor glycemic control at presentation was not associated with mortality outcomes. How to cite this article: Sharma ...

Dysbiosis in Irritable Bowel Syndrome
J Assoc Physicians India. 2023 Sep;71(9):75-81. doi: 10.59556/japi.71.0353.ABSTRACTThe human gut microbiota fosters the development of a dynamic group of microorganisms impacted by diverse variables that include genetics, diet, infection, stress, ingested drugs, such as antibiotics and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) as well as the gut microbiota itself. These factors may influence the change in microbial composition, which results in dysbiosis (microbial imbalance) and exposes the gut to pathogenic insults. Dysbiosis is incidental to the etiology of inflammatory diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) ...

Early Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: An Update
J Assoc Physicians India. 2023 Sep;71(9):101-103. doi: 10.59556/japi.71.0351.ABSTRACTHyperglycemia occurring in pregnancy is a growing burden worldwide. It is now standard of care to screen all women during pregnancy, both to detect preexisting diabetes as well as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Traditionally, GDM was diagnosed at 24-28 weeks. However, with many international bodies recommending screening at first contact or booking, we are now diagnosing GDM earlier on in pregnancy. Based on the time of gestation at which it is diagnosed, GDM can be classified as conventional gestational diabetes mellitus (cGDM) or e...

Association of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists with risk of cancers-evidence from a drug target Mendelian randomization and clinical trials
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that GLP1RA may decrease the risk of breast cancer and basal cell carcinoma, but increase the risk of colorectal cancer. However, according to the systematic review of RCTs, the incidence of cancer in patients treated with GLP1RA is low. Larger sample sizes of RCTs with long-term follow-up are necessary to establish the incidence of cancers and evaluate the risk-benefit ratios.PMID:38701500 | DOI:10.1097/JS9.0000000000001514 (Source: Cancer Control)

Exploring exercise-driven exerkines: unraveling the regulation of metabolism and inflammation
PeerJ. 2024 Apr 29;12:e17267. doi: 10.7717/peerj.17267. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTExercise has many beneficial effects that provide health and metabolic benefits. Signaling molecules are released from organs and tissues in response to exercise stimuli and are widely termed exerkines, which exert influence on a multitude of intricate multi-tissue processes, such as muscle, adipose tissue, pancreas, liver, cardiovascular tissue, kidney, and bone. For the metabolic effect, exerkines regulate the metabolic homeostasis of organisms by increasing glucose uptake and improving fat synthesis. For the anti-inflammatory effect, exerki...
