Expert Opin Pharmacother. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.1080/14656566.2024.2347468. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a serious complication of diabetes mellitus involving multiple pathophysiologic mechanisms. In addition to hypoglycemic agents commonly used in diabetes, metabolism-related drugs, natural plant extracts, melatonin, exosomes, and rennin-angiotensin-aldosterone system are cardioprotective in DCM. However, there is a lack of systematic summarization of drugs for DCM.AREAS COVERED: In this review, the authors systematically summarize the most recent drugs used for the treatment...

Stereo-selective cardiac toxicity induced by metconazole via oxidative stress and the Wnt/ β-catenin signaling pathway in zebrafish embryos
We report stereoselectivity and severe cardiovascular defects in zebrafish, including pericardial oedema, decreased heart rate, increased sinus venous and bulbous arteries distances, intersegmental vessel defects, and altered cardiovascular development genes (hand2, gata4, nkx2.5, tbx5, vmhc, amhc, dll4, vegfaa, and vegfc). Further, MEZ significantly increased oxidative stress and apoptosis in zebrafish, primarily in the cardiac region. Isoquercetin, an antioxidant found in plants, partially mitigates MEZ-induced cardiac defects. Furthermore, MEZ upregulated the Wnt/β-catenin pathway genes (wnt3, β-catenin, axin2, and gs...

Implications of Cardiopulmonary Risk for the Management of COPD: A Narrative Review
Adv Ther. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.1007/s12325-024-02855-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) constitutes a major global health burden and is the third leading cause of death worldwide. A high proportion of patients with COPD have cardiovascular disease, but there is also evidence that COPD is a risk factor for adverse outcomes in cardiovascular disease. Patients with COPD frequently die of respiratory and cardiovascular causes, yet the identification and management of cardiopulmonary risk remain suboptimal owing to limited awareness and clinical intervention. Acute exacerbations punctu...

Effects of residential socioeconomic polarization on high blood pressure among nursing home residents
CONCLUSIONS: We achieved our objective by demonstrating that concentrated deprivation is associated with worse cardiovascular outcomes even in a population with equal access to care. Measures that jointly consider economic and racial/ethnic polarization elucidate larger disparities than single domain measures.PMID:38663339 | DOI:10.1016/j.healthplace.2024.103243 (Source: Health and Place)

SGLT2-independent effects of canagliflozin on NHE3 and mitochondrial complex I activity inhibit proximal tubule fluid transport and albumin uptake
Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.1152/ajprenal.00005.2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBeyond glycemic control, SGLT2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have protective effects on cardiorenal function. Renoprotection has been suggested to involve inhibition of NHE3 leading to reduced ATP-dependent tubular workload and mitochondrial oxygen consumption. NHE3 activity is also important for regulation of endosomal pH, but the effects of SGLT2i on endocytosis are unknown. We used a highly differentiated cell culture model of proximal tubule (PT) cells to determine the direct effects of SGLT2i on Na+-dependent fluid transport...

Does engagement matter? The impact of patient and community engagement on implementation of cardiovascular health materials in primary care settings
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, patients and community members generated common and unique messages and materials for cardiovascular disease prevention relevant to their regional and community culture. Primary care practices preferred the materials created in their region. The greater uptake of locally created materials over non-local materials supports the use of patient engagement methods such as BCT to increase the implementation and delivery of guideline-based care. Yes, patient and community engagement matters.TRIAL REGISTRATION AND IRB: Trial registration was prospectively registered on July 31, 2015 at ClinicalTrials.go...

A Bibliometric Analysis of Study of Associations of Certain Genotypes with the Cardiovascular Form of Diabetic Neuropathy
Biomed Res Int. 2024 Apr 15;2024:6761451. doi: 10.1155/2024/6761451. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThis bibliometric analysis explores the landscape of research on the associations between specific genotypes and the cardiovascular form of diabetic neuropathy. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major contributor to premature mortality, primarily due to increased susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases. The global prevalence of DM is rising, with projections indicating further increases. Diabetic neuropathy, a complication of DM, includes the cardiovascular subtype, posing challenges in diagnosis and management. Understanding the gene...

Impact of abdominal compression on heart and stomach motion for stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation
CONCLUSIONS: AC was not a consistent motion management method for STAR, nor does not uniformly affect the separation distance between LVCs and the stomach. If AC is employed in future STAR protocols, the motion of the target volume and its relative distance to the stomach should be compared on two 4DCTs: one while the patient is FB and one under AC.PMID:38661250 | DOI:10.1002/acm2.14346 (Source: Methods of Information in Medicine)

Growth differentiation factor-15 serum concentrations reflect disease severity and anemia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
CONCLUSION: For the first time, we demonstrated that serum concentrations of GDF-15 are elevated in patients with IBD in comparison to healthy controls, and the results imply that GDF-15 might be involved in IBD pathophysiology. Yet, it remains elusive whether GDF-15 could serve as a prognostic indicator in these patients.PMID:38659482 | PMC:PMC11036493 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1899 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology)
