Is a research year necessary to get into a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship?
I am nearly done with my PGY-2 year and I'm very interested in CT surgery. We have the option of a research year, but I am wondering if that's absolutely necessary to do to get a position in a CT surgery fellowship. I do have projects that I am working on within my program, so I will have publications/presentations by the time I finish residency. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Boston University vs. Rush
I've been very fortunate to get to pick between these options but am feeling pretty torn. I was initially very set on BU because of the higher ranking/prestige (cost of attendance would be nearly identical), but after visiting Rush I am reconsidering. My family is in CA, so both are far regardless. I hope to eventually match back into CA, and as of now I'm thinking of cardiology. For cardiology, my impression is that matching into a good name academic IM program in CA would set me up best... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

UICOM v. Loyola
Hello! I know it's late to talk about this but since I was fortunate to be accepted by two Illinois schools, UICOM and Loyola, I want to learn some perspectives from everyone! I wish to specialize in Derm, Cardiology, or Radiology in the future. Which school will be a better fit? I enjoyed my interview days at each school and everyone seems to be very cool during my second look visits. The caveat is I was assigned to the Peoria campus for UICOM whereas Loyola would be in Maywood/Chicago. I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Peds Cardiac Anesthesia Apprenticeship?
Hi everyone, Finishing up my peds anesthesia fellowship in a couple months, and I am joining a 50/50 adult/peds PP when I'm done. One of the things I'm having such a hard time with accepting is that I will not be doing any pedi hearts. Love doing pedi hearts. Peds cardiac anesthesia is a new fellowship and with the amount of peds cardiac experience I have during fellowship, multiple people telling me that training wise, I definitely do not need to have an advanced fellowship to succeed. One... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

LOR Question
Hi all. Quick question regarding LORs and apologies as it may be a super dumb one. Is it appropriate to ask for a LOR from the head of the cardiology department at my institution if I've worked closely with them on a wards rotation? Especially if I'm trying to match at my home institution? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
