Cholesterol transport and beyond: Illuminating the versatile functions of HDL apolipoproteins through structural insights and functional implications
High-density lipoproteins are versatile lipoprotein nanoparticles that have pleotropic functions in regulating lipid metabolism, innate immunity, and protection of cardiovascular system. They comprise of several proteins among which 15 apolipoproteins are the major proteins, with diverse functions. This review focuses on the structure, function, polymorphisms, and their role in human health and diseases and implications of developing novel therapeutic. AbstractHigh-density lipoproteins (HDLs) play a vital role in lipid metabolism and cardiovascular health, as they are intricately involved in cholesterol transport and infla...

Left bundle branch area pacing using a lumenless lead: A systematic literature review and meta ‐analysis
ConclusionThis meta-analysis including 6061 patients implanted with a Model 3830 lead for LBBAP found an average implant success rate of 92.7% and a procedural adverse event rate of 2.5% with stable electrical parameters and LVEF post-implant. (Source: Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology)

N-Butyl cyanoacrylate embolization of an extremely rare variant of sequestration complex — a high-flow left-to-left shunt between systemic artery and pulmonary vein
AbstractA 19-year-old female presented with hemoptysis. Computed tomography (CT) pulmonary angiography revealed aberrant vessels from descending thoracic aorta, draining into pulmonary veins (left-to-left shunt). She was managed by transcatheter embolization of the aberrant vessels using N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) with balloon occlusion. A systemic artery to pulmonary vein fistula is one of the least common congenital anomalies. Most of the reported cases have been managed by surgery. Only a few patients have been treated by transcatheter embolization, using coils or vascular plugs as the embolizing agents. To our knowle...

Ebstein ’s anomaly with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection in an adult
We report the first successful s urgical correction of both Ebstein’s anomaly and total anomalous pulmonary venous connection in an adult patient. Such complex scenarios may pose unique challenges in management which require a judicious approach. (Source: Indian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Surgical rescue mitral valve procedure post percutaneous transluminal mitral commissurotomy —a single-center observational study
This study evaluates the outcomes of surgical rescue performed within 24  h of undergoing PTMC from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2019. Out of 2259 PTMC patients, 22 patients (<  1%) required rescue mitral valve surgery. Out of 22 patients, 17 patients (77.27%) developed mitral regurgitation; five patients (22.7%) had cardiac tamponade. Mitral valve replacement was performed in 20 patients (90.9%), while two patients (9.1%) underwent mitral valve repair. Cardiac tamponade was secondary to injury of the left atrium (9.1%), left ventricle (4.5%), and right ventricle (9.1%). Concomitant tricuspid valve repair was done i...

Transaortic septal myectomy at the time of aortic valve replacement for severe aortic stenosis: a case series of 55 cases
ConclusionAVR with CSM is a simple technique that can be utilised in severe AS with ABSH. There does not appear to be an increase in mortality or incidence of iatrogenic VSDs. Importantly, CSM allows for the implantation of a larger aortic valve compared to measurements made before CSM. (Source: Indian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Ewing ’s sarcoma of kidney extending into IVC and RA: resection using modified cannulation strategy for CPB
AbstractEwing ’s sarcoma of the kidney is a rare tumor. Although renal carcinomas are known to involve the inferior cava, extension of the tumor up to the right atrium is not common. In the majority of cases when the tumor extends into the infrahepatic part of the inferior vena cava, it can be removed from the abdominal approach. Few patients require the use of cardiopulmonary bypass for removal of the tumor in the inferior vena cava and right atrium. The management of patients requiring resection of kidney tumors and right atrial mass is more complicated and requires a team approach consisting of oncosu rgeons, cardiac ...

Thromboprophylaxis for outpatients with COVID-19: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
AbstractPatients with COVID-19 develop an increased risk of thromboembolism. Thromboprophylaxis is recommended for hospitalized COVID-19 patients, but the role of thromboprophylaxis in outpatients with COVID-19 is less well defined. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the safety and efficacy of thromboprophylaxis among outpatients with COVID-19. We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and Scopus from inception to August 2023. The outcomes of interest were venous thromboembolic events including deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, all-c...
