Richness of sputum microbiome in acute exacerbations of eosinophilic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
This study aimed to investigate the dynamic changes of the airway microbiome in patients with acute exacerbations of eosinophilic COPD. METHODS: Fifty-seven patients with acute exacerbations of COPD from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University between June 2017 and June 2018 were divided into two groups. Patients with eosinophils ≥300 cells/μL in the peripheral venous blood were assigned to the eosinophilic group (Eos) and the rest to the non-eosinophilic group (Noneos). All patients received similar treatment including inhaled budesonide according to the guidelines. The induced sputum microb...

Functional changes of the lateral pterygoid muscle in patients with temporomandibular disorders: a pilot magnetic resonance images texture study.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Texture features were the intrinsic properties of the human tissues and could efficiently detect the subtle functional changes of involved tissue. The pathologic changes of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) were significantly correlated with the temporomandibular disc displacement. However, the occult functional changes of LPM could not be detected by the naked eye on the medical images. The current study was aimed to evaluate the functional changes of the LPM in the patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) using texture analysis. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with TMD were perfo...

Machine learning in nephrology: scratching the surface.
Abstract Machine learning shows enormous potential in facilitating decision-making regarding kidney diseases. With the development of data preservation and processing, as well as the advancement of machine learning algorithms, machine learning is expected to make remarkable breakthroughs in nephrology. Machine learning models have yielded many preliminaries to moderate and several excellent achievements in the fields, including analysis of renal pathological images, diagnosis and prognosis of chronic kidney diseases and acute kidney injury, as well as management of dialysis treatments. However, it is just scratchi...

Epigenetic therapies in acute myeloid leukemia: the role of hypomethylating agents, histone deacetylase inhibitors and the combination of hypomethylating agents with histone deacetylase inhibitors.
Abstract Epigenetic regulation includes changes of DNA methylation and modifications of histone proteins and is essential for normal physiologic functions, especially for controlling gene expression. Epigenetic dysregulation plays a key role in disease pathogenesis and progression of some malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Epigenetic therapies, including hypomethylating agents (HMAs) and histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors, were developed to reprogram the epigenetic abnormalities in AML. However, the molecular mechanisms and therapeutic effects of the two agents alone or their combination rema...

Abstract Enhanced recovery after cesarean (ERAC) delivery is an evidence-based, multi-disciplinary approach throughout pre-, intra-, post-operative period. The ultimate goal of ERAC is to enhance recovery and improve the maternal and neonatal outcomes. This review highlights the role of anesthesiologist in ERAC protocols. This review provided a general introduction of ERAC including the purposes and the essential elements of ERAC protocols. The tool used for evaluating the quality of ERAC (ObsQoR-11) was discussed. The role of anesthesiologist in ERAC should cover the areas including management of peri-operative h...

Concerned topics of epidural labor analgesia: labor elongation and maternal pyrexia: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Early EA (cervical dilation ≥1 cm) does not increase the risk for cesarean section. Continuous epidural application of low doses of analgesics and programmed intermittent epidural bolus do not prolong second-stage labor duration or impact maternal and neonatal outcomes. The association between EA and maternal pyrexia remains controversial, but pyrexia is more common with EA than without. A non-infectious inflammatory process is an accepted mechanism of epidural-related maternal fever. PMID: 32032081 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Chinese Medical Journal)

Bolus norepinephrine and phenylephrine for maternal hypotension during elective cesarean section with spinal anesthesia: a randomized, double-blinded study.
Abstract BACKGROUND: In recent years, norepinephrine has attracted increasing attention for the management of maternal hypotension during elective cesarean section with spinal anesthesia. Intermittent bolus is a widely used administration paradigm for vasopressors in obstetric anesthesia in China. Thus, in this randomized, double-blinded study, we compared the efficacy and safety of equivalent bolus norepinephrine and phenylephrine for rescuing maternal post-spinal hypotension. Advances in the development of chimeric antigen receptor-T-cell therapy in B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Abstract CD19-targeted chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy is effective in refractory/relapsed (R/R) B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). This review focuses on achievements, current obstacles, and future directions in CAR-T research. A high complete remission rate of 68% to 93% could be achieved after anti-CD19 CAR-T treatment for B-ALL. Cytokine release syndrome and CAR-T-related neurotoxicity could be managed. In view of difficulties collecting autologous lymphocytes, universal CAR-T is a direction to explore. Regarding the high relapse rate after anti-CD19 CAR-T therapy, the main solutions...

A new tool for comprehensive geriatric assessment in elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia: a pilot study from China.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a common type of hematological malignancy in elderly people. Geriatricians have developed comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) methods for elderly patients; however, the tools used for CGA in AML are not uniform. Thus, we aimed to validate the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scales, age, comorbidities (Charlson Comorbidity Index), and albumin (IACA) index, which is a new tool for CGA, in elderly patients with AML. METHODS: Patients aged ≥60 years who had been diagnosed with AML were screened for eligibility. Among the IACA low-, interm...
