Study of Association of Chromosomal Region 1Q21-23 with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Their Correlation with Severity of Disease
CONCLUSION: Bigger cohort studies will allow better genomic elucidation of clinically defined intermediate phenotypes evaluated in RA patients by virtue of the autoimmune origin of the disease and its diverse symptoms in patients. Genetic-molecular studies can be a milestone for adopting effective personalized treatment for such progressively debilitating diseases. How to cite this article: Gauri LA, Meena MK, Singh U, et al. Using machine learning algorithms based on patient admission laboratory parameters to predict adverse outcomes in COVID-19 patients
In this study, we present a novel predictive model centered on routine clinical laboratory test data to swiftly forecast patient survival outcomes upon admission. Our model integrates feature selection algorithms and binary classification algorithms, optimizing algorithmic selection through meticulous parameter control. Notably, we developed an algorithm coupling Lasso and SVM methodologies, achieving a remarkable area under the ROC curve of 0.9277 with the use of merely 8 clinical laboratory parameters collected upon admission. Our primary contribution lies in the utilization of straightforward laboratory parameters for p...

Evaluation of the Pneumonia Panel on laboratory samples from an Italian pediatric center: results from a monocentric study
New Microbiol. 2024 May;47(1):33-37.ABSTRACTLower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) are still burdened by considerable morbidity and mortality. Rapid and appropriate treatment imply knowledge of the underlying causative pathogen; while it is tempting to offer broad spectrum antibiotics, Antimicrobial Stewardship Practices invite a judicious use of the latter, especially when bacteria are not the cause. However, the epidemiology shifts to multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogens that require optimization of molecules in order to provide optimal treatment. Novel methods requiring direct sample result testing such as the Biofire...

Jugular Foramen Paragangliomas
Adv Tech Stand Neurosurg. 2024;49:201-229. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-42398-7_10.ABSTRACTParagangliomas are the most common tumors at jugular foramen and pose a great surgical challenge. Careful clinical history and physical examination must be performed to adequately evaluate neurological deficits and its chronologic evolution, also to delineate an overview of the patient performance status. Complete imaging evaluation including MRI and CT scans should be performed, and angiography is a must to depict tumor blood supply and sigmoid sinus/internal jugular vein patency. Screening for multifocal paragangliomas is advisable, with...

Exploring Appropriate Reference Intervals and Clinical Decision Limits for Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Activity in Individuals From Guangzhou, China
CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, our findings contribute to a more accurate evaluation of G6PD-activity levels within the local population and provide valuable insights for clinical decision-making. Specifically, identifying threshold values for G6PD variants and hemolysis risk enables improved prediction and management of G6PD deficiency, ultimately enhancing patient care and treatment outcomes.PMID:38699793 | DOI:10.3343/alm.2023.0477 (Source: Annals of Laboratory Medicine)

Health status and public health needs in a Togolese child health care centre modelled after the Dutch system
CONCLUSION: A large group of children in need of prevention and early treatment were detected, informed and treated by the centre. Further research is needed to confirm if this strategy can improve children's health in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our data are available for further research.PMID:38700227 | DOI:10.1080/03014460.2024.2342529 (Source: Annals of Human Biology)

Supinoxin blocks Small Cell Lung Cancer Progression by Inhibiting Mitochondrial Respiration through the RNA Helicase DDX5
Res Sq [Preprint]. 2024 Apr 15:rs.3.rs-4169007. doi: 10.21203/rs.3.rs-4169007/v1.ABSTRACTDDX5 is a DEAD-box RNA helicase that is overexpressed and implicated in progression of several cancers 1-4. One of these is small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Our laboratory has demonstrated that the RNA helicase DDX5 is essential for the invasive growth of SCLC and mitochondrial respiration 5. SCLC is an extremely lethal, recalcitrant tumor 6,7, causing 250,000 deaths annually worldwide 8 and currently lacking effective treatments 9,10. Supinoxin (RX 5902), a compound having anti-cancer activity 11, is a known target of phosphor-DDX5 12,1...

Combined Effects of Glenohumeral Mobilization, Stretching, and Thoracic Manipulation on Shoulder Internal Rotation Range of Motion
DISCUSSION: Both GH posterior mobilizations and sleeper stretches improved IR and horizontal adduction PROM in a single session. The addition of thoracic manipulation prior to local shoulder interventions resulted in smaller gains of both IR and horizontal adduction ROM.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2.PMID:38699673 | PMC:PMC11065457 | DOI:10.26603/001c.95040 (Source: Physical Therapy)

Biochemical risk factors and outcomes of acute promyelocytic leukemia patients with thrombotic events: a matched pair analysis
AbstractAcute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) stands out as a distinctive form of acute leukemia, exhibiting a higher occurrence of thrombotic events when contrasted with other leukemia subtypes. Since thrombosis is a relatively rare but unfavorable condition with poor prognostic implications, it is crucial to determine the risk factors for thrombotic events in APL(thrombosis in large venous or arterial from onset to differentiation therapy in 30d). We performed a retrospective study involving 950 APL patients between January 2000 and October 2022, from which 123 were excluded by younger than 16  years of age, 95 were exclud...

What do we know about Aquafilling tissue filler? – A systematic review
ConclusionsOver time, Aquafilling injection can potentially result in a variety of complications. It triggers inflammation and prophylactic removal should be considered. MRI and USG are recommended in the diagnostic process. Elevated CRP, WBC, or ESR indicate the presence of comorbidity or advanced gel infection. The recommended treatment is radical surgery. There is not enough information available in the literature about reconstruction, especially regarding immediate reconstruction. Antibiotics should be administered according to the antibiogram, with ciprofloxacin and clindamycin being considered if empirical treatment ...
