New solutions to old problems: A practical approach to identify samples with intravenous fluid contamination in clinical laboratories
CONCLUSIONS: The proposed algorithm identified true contamination with low false flagging rates in tertiary care urban hospital laboratories. Retrospective and prospective analysis suggest the algorithm is suitable for implementation in clinical laboratories to identify samples with possible IV fluid contamination for further investigation.PMID:38615787 | DOI:10.1016/j.clinbiochem.2024.110763 (Source: Clinical Biochemistry)

Physical and Physiological Predictors Determining the Maximal Static Apnea Diving Time of Male Freedivers
This study aimed to investigate what factors determine freedivers' maximal static apnea dive time. We correlated some physical/physiological factors with male freedivers' maximum apnea diving duration. Thirty-six experienced male freedivers participated in this study. The divers participated in two days of the experiments. On the first day, apnea diving time, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), stress index, and blood parameters were measured before, during, and after the apnea diving in the pool. On the second day, body composition, lung capacity, resting and maximal oxygen consumption (V...

Injury-Admission Time is an Independent Risk Factor for Deep Vein Thrombosis in Older Patients with Osteoporotic Hip Fracture
CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that screening for deep vein thrombosis should be routinely performed for patients with osteoporotic hip fractures, particularly for those with injury-admission time ≥21 h.PMID:38615190 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.943587 (Source: Medical Science Monitor)

Transferrin levels are associated with malnutrition markers in hemodialysis patients in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
CONCLUSION: Thus, transferrin levels are a valuable marker for malnutrition within the HD patient population and can be included along with clinical assessment parameters such as MUAC and skinfold thickness as primary indicators for malnutrition.PMID:38616181 | PMC:PMC11017997 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2337292 (Source: Renal Failure)

Strain visualization using large-angle convergent-beam electron diffraction
In this study, we report a strain visualization method using large-angle convergent-beam electron diffraction (LACBED).1 We compare the proposed method with the strain maps acquired via STEM-NBD, a combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and nanobeam electron diffraction (NBD). Although STEM-NBD can precisely measure the lattice parameters, it requires a large amount of data and personal computer (PC) resources to obtain a two-dimensional strain map. Deficiency lines in the transmitted disk of LACBED reflect the crystalline structure information and move, curve, or disappear in the deformed area. Pr...

Secondary-electron imaging of bulk crystalline specimens in an aberration corrected STEM
In this study, we explore the practicality of scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) imaging with secondary electrons (SE), using a silicon-wedge specimen having a maximum thickness of 18 μm. We find that the atomic structure is present in the entire thickness range of the SE images although the background intensity increases moderately with thickness. The consistent intensity of secondary electron (SE) images at atomic positions and the modest increase in background intensity observed in silicon suggest a limited contribution from SEs generated by backscattered electrons, a conclusion supported by our multislic...

The dawning era of oral thin films for nutraceutical delivery: From laboratory to clinic
Biotechnol Adv. 2024 Apr 12:108362. doi: 10.1016/j.biotechadv.2024.108362. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOral thin films (OTFs) are innovative dosage forms that have gained tremendous attention for the delivery of nutraceuticals. They are ultra-thin, flexible sheets that can be easily placed on the tongue, sublingual or buccal mucosa (inner lining of the cheek). These thin films possess several advantages for nutraceutical delivery including ease of administration, rapid disintegration, fast absorption, rapid onset of action, bypass first-pass hepatic metabolism, accurate dosing, enhanced stability, portability, discreetne...

A comparative study on the detection of Mycobacterium leprae DNA in urine samples of leprosy patients using Rlep-PCR with other conventional samples
CONCLUSION: The PCR positivity using Rlep gene target (129 bp) was highest in all clinical samples among the study groups, across all types of leprosy. Untreated tuberculoid and PNL leprosy patients showed the highest PCR positivity in urine samples, indicating its potential as a non-invasive diagnostic tool for leprosy and even for contact screening.PMID:38616219 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09470-0 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Clinical outcomes of clostridioides difficile infection in the very elderly
ConclusionsIn our cohort, the duration of hospital stay seemed to be shorter in the very elderly with no increase of in-hospital and post-discharge mortality. Although admitted less frequently to ICU, the in-hospital survival of the very elderly was not adversely affected compared to the elderly, suggesting that very advanced age per se should not be a major factor to consider in determining the prognosis of a patient with CDI.
