Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2587: Piezoelectric Sensors as Energy Harvesters for Ultra Low-Power IoT Applications
zebon The aim of this paper is to discuss the usability of vibrations as energy sources, for the implementation of energy self-sufficient wireless sensing platforms within the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) framework. In this context, this paper proposes to equip vibrating assets like machinery with piezoelectric sensors, used to set up energy self-sufficient sensing platforms for hard-to-reach positions. Preliminary measurements as well as extended laboratory tests are proposed to understand the behavior of commercial piezoelectric sensors when employed as energy harvesters. First, a general architecture for a v...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2588: A Laboratory Machine Verifying the Operation of a Hydraulic Rope Equalizer with Tensometric Sensors
This article presents a structural design, a 3D model and an implemented solution of a laboratory device capable of simulating a practical method of evenly distributing the total weight of the load into partial tensile forces of the same size acting on a selected number of load-bearing ropes. The laboratory equipment uses two pairs of three steel cables of finite length for the simulations. During the experimental measurements, tensile forces derived from the tractive force of the piston rods, pushed into the bodies of the hydraulic cylinders by the pressure of the hydraulic oil supplied through the pipeline under the pist...

Invited commentary on: sudden cardiac death
Postmortem examination holds a pivotal role in our society. The implications of this procedure are vast, ranging from medicolegal consequences to characterisation of heritable genetic syndromes and closure for those proximal to the deceased. Despite its widespread intrinsic value, a surprising 1%–5% of postmortem examinations will lack revealing gross, histologic, or laboratory findings that inform the cause of death.1 2 The so-called ‘negative autopsy’ is a challenge for the medical system and relatives of the deceased alike. A specific list of differential diagnoses is considered in the setting of a neg...

From Castleman disease histopathological features to idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease: a multiparametric approach to exclude potential iMCD histopathological mimickers
Conclusions HHV-8+ MCD and PCN/POEMS-related CD are the major mimickers of iMCD in lymph node biopsies. Grading of the five histopathological features for CD might be useful to, in conjunction with complete ancillary testing, suggest for specific disease entities. Accuracy of point-of-care testing for the diagnosis of respiratory pathogens in a paediatric intensive care setting
Respiratory tract infections contribute significantly to paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admissions. Early diagnosis supports treatment, cohorting and antimicrobial stewardship. Rapid point-of-care (POC) multiplex PCR techniques show promise in improving antimicrobial and investigation stewardship across healthcare settings.1 However, debate exists regarding their role and accuracy.2 3 We sought to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of respiratory pathogen POC testing in our PICU. All patients admitted to the regional Northern Ireland PICU undergo nasal/nasopharyngeal swab respiratory pathogen POC testing. The Bio...

Sputum colour as a simplified effective biomarker for clinical assessment of bronchiectasis
Extract Bronchiectasis is a structural lung disease characterised by chronic airway inflammation due to various aetiologies, with a vicious circle of recurrent infections, chronic inflammation, impaired mucociliary clearance and structural damage that collectively result in clinical progression [1]. The most prominent clinical manifestations of bronchiectasis are chronic cough and mucopurulent sputum production, the consequence of airway mucus hypersecretion and heightened inflammatory responses which could predispose to irreversible airway destruction [2, 3]. Amid this vicious circle of bronchiectasis pathogenesis is chro...

Estrogen Receptor, Progesterone Receptor, and Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 Expression Rates in Invasive Breast Carcinoma: A Study of 21 Institutions
CONCLUSIONS.—: The data from this study provide multi-institutional benchmark data to assist laboratories performing periodic comparisons as part of a quality management program. Overall expression rates were generally similar to those of other published reports, with the exception of the ER-negative and HER2-positive rates, both of which were somewhat lower.PMID:38631690 | DOI:10.5858/arpa.2022-0384-CP (Source: Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine)

Precision medicine: "Point of Care Ultrasound" (PoCUS) in the diagnostic approach to the patient with hyponatremia
Nefrologia (Engl Ed). 2024 Apr 16:S2013-2514(24)00081-6. doi: 10.1016/j.nefroe.2024.03.022. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHyponatremia is a multifactorial disorder defined as a decrease in plasma sodium concentration. Its differential diagnosis requires an adequate evaluation of the extracellular volume (ECV). However, ECV determination, simply based on the clinical history, vital signs, physical examination, and laboratory findings can leads to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. The use of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), through the combination of Lung Ultrasound (LUS), Venous Excess UltraSound (VExUS) and Focuse...

Comparison of Limb Loading Characteristics and Subjective Functional Outcomes Between Sexes Following ACLR
CONCLUSION: Individuals approximately five months following ACLR, on average, offloaded their ACLR limb compared to the contralateral limb. Patients' tendency to offload their weight during a squat was influenced by sex. Relationships between limb loading metrics and PROs indicate patients who load their limbs disproportionately have a lower perception in their capability to complete activities of daily living and lower subjective knee function.PMID:38629487 | DOI:10.4085/1062-6050-0534.23 (Source: Journal of Athletic Training)

Methods and reagent-lot comparisons by regression analysis: sample size considerations
CONCLUSIONS: While some software is available to calculate joint confidence regions in real-life analyses, shifting this testing method into the mainstream will require a greater number of software developers incorporating the necessary code into their regression programs. The computer program used to conduct this study is freely available and can be used to model any laboratory test.PMID:38631810 | DOI:10.1177/00045632241252006 (Source: Clinical Biochemistry)

Biomarkers of frailty
Mol Aspects Med. 2024 Apr 16;97:101271. doi: 10.1016/j.mam.2024.101271. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSeveral biomarkers have been proposed to identify frailty, a multisystemic age-related syndrome. However, the complex pathophysiology and the absence of a consensus on a comprehensive and universal definition make it challenging to pinpoint a singular biomarker or set of biomarkers that conclusively characterize frailty. This review delves into the main laboratory biomarkers, placing special emphasis on those associated with various pathways closely tied to the frailty condition, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, mit...

< em > Klebsiella pneumoniae < /em > sequence type 147: a high-risk clone increasingly associated with plasmids carrying both resistance and virulence elements
Conclusion. This study highlights the high proportion of representatives of ST147 that carry IncFIB(pNDM-Mar)/IncHI1B(pNDM-MAR) hybrid resistance virulence plasmids. It is important to be aware of the high probability that representatives of this type carry these plasmids combining resistance and virulence determinants and of the consequent increased risk to patients.PMID:38629482 | DOI:10.1099/jmm.0.001823 (Source: Journal of Medical Microbiology)
