Compilation of regulations and procedures for monitoring filamentous fungi in hospital environments
Rev Argent Microbiol. 2024 Apr 9:S0325-7541(24)00020-8. doi: 10.1016/j.ram.2024.02.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAir and surfaces in the hospital environment are a potential source of exposure to filamentous fungi (FF) that could cause invasive fungal diseases (IFD) in severely immunocompromised patients. The prevalent FF in IFD are species from the genera Aspergillus, Fusarium, Scedosporium, and those within the order Mucorales. We have compiled regulations and described the procedures used in the clinical mycology laboratory to assess the presence of FF in areas at risk for the development of IFD. The infection cont...

The Interplay Between Human Leukocyte Antigen Antibody Profile and COVID-19 Vaccination in Waitlisted Renal Transplant Patients
CONCLUSIONS.—: Our data suggest that COVID-19 vaccination propagates anti-HLA class I and II antibodies for waitlisted renal transplant patients. The clinical significance of these antibodies needs further study. Furthermore, comorbidities, such as history of COVID-19 infection and hypertension, supplemented this effect. Anti-HLA antibody monitoring may be warranted in vaccinated, waitlisted renal transplant patients with COVID-19 vaccinations, and a history of COVID-19 infection or hypertension.PMID:38599589 | DOI:10.5858/arpa.2023-0370-OA (Source: Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine)

Prevalence of pathogens in honey bee colonies and association with clinical signs in southwestern Quebec, Canada
Can J Vet Res. 2024 Apr;88(2):45-54.ABSTRACTHoney bees can be affected by a variety of pathogens, which impacts their vital role as pollinators in agriculture. A cross-sectional study was conducted in southwestern Quebec to: i) estimate the prevalence of 11 bee pathogens; ii) assess the agreement between beekeeper suspicion of a disease and laboratory detection of the causative pathogen; and iii) explore the association between observed clinical signs and pathogen detection in a colony. A total of 242 colonies in 31 apiaries owned by 15 beekeepers was sampled in August 2017. The prevalence of Varroa destructor detection wa...

Small bowel intramural hematoma caused by warfarin: case report and literature review
CONCLUSION: Our analysis highlights that hematoma in the small intestinal wall caused by warfarin overdose often presents as sudden and intense abdominal pain, laboratory tests suggest reduced coagulation capacity, and imaging often shows thickening of the intestinal wall. Intravenous vitamin K and plasma supplementation are effective non-surgical strategies. Nevertheless, in instances of severe obstruction and unresponsive hemostasis, surgical resection of necrotic intestinal segments may be necessary. In the cases we reported, we avoided surgery by closely monitoring the coagulation function. Therefore, we suggest that i...
