Economic assessment of abemaciclib for the adjuvant treatment of luminal HER2- breast cancer from the perspective of the Spanish health system
ConclusionDespite the significant gains of abemaciclib as adjuvant treatment in terms of progression-free survival, this treatment is not cost-effective for the Spanish National Health System at published prices. It may be cost-effective with an appropriate discount on the official price. (Source: The European Journal of Health Economics)

Association of Herpes simplex infection with significantly increased risk of head and neck cancer: real-world evidence of about 500,000 patients
CONCLUSION: The surprisingly strong correlation with lip, oral cavity, and pharynx neoplasms sheds new light on supposedly harmless herpes simplex infections, suggesting them as a possible new factor for risk stratification.PMID:38643367 | DOI:10.1111/ijd.17196 (Source: Herpes)

Prevotella intermedia boosts OSCC progression through ISG15 upregulation: a new target for intervention
ConclusionIn conclusion, intratumoralP. intermedia infection aggravated OSCC progression, which may be achieved through upregulation of ISG15. This study sheds new light on the possible pathogenic mechanism of intratumoralP. intermedia in OSCC progression, which could be a prospective target for OSCC prevention and treatment. Medication ‐related osteonecrosis of the jaw: Case series and literature review
We described three patients with MRONJ including their presentation, investigations, management protocols, and outcomes. A brief appraisal of the literature on MRONJ was also done.AbstractMedication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a rare complication of the jaws following the administration of antiresorptive or antiangiogenic drugs. This condition poses a major challenge to its management. We present an appraisal of the literature and three cases of MRONJ. An appraisal of 3 patients who presented to the oral and maxillofacial clinic with MRONJ was done. Relevant physical examination findings, radiological image...

Novel oral selective estrogen receptor degraders (SERDs) to target hormone receptor positive breast cancer: Elacestrant as the poster-child
Expert Rev Anticancer Ther. 2024 Apr 20. doi: 10.1080/14737140.2024.2346188. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer is the most common breast cancer subtype, and therapeutic management relies primarily on inhibiting ER signaling. In the metastatic setting, ER signaling is typically targeted by selective estrogen receptor degraders (SERDs) or aromatase inhibitors (AIs), the latter of which prevent estrogen production. Activating ESR1 mutations are among the most common emergent breast cancer mutations and confer resistance to AIs.AREAS COVERED: Until 2023, fulvestrant was ...

Improved recurrence rates and progression-free survival in primarily surgically treated oral squamous cell carcinoma – results from a German tertiary medical center
ConclusionsOur findings show a significant decrease in recurrence rates and enhanced PFS at a high-volume tertiary medical center in Germany compared to previous studies. Local recurrence was the primary form observed, with most recurrences happening within the initial twelve months post-surgery. Opting for treatment at a high-volume center and devising therapy plans in interdisciplinary tumor boards may not only enhance OS but also contribute to improved PFS.Clinical relevanceThese findings offer valuable insights for physicians regarding the post-treatment care of patients with OSCC. The results underscore the importance...

Multi-omics analysis of immune-related microbiome and prognostic model in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
ConclusionsThis study offers a comprehensive exploration of the ICI landscape in HNSCC. We provide a detailed scenario of immune regulation in HNSCC and report a correlation between differing ICI patterns, intratumor microbiome, and prognosis. This research aids in identifying prime candidates for optimizing treatment strategies in HNSCC.Clinical relevanceThis study revealed the microbial signatures associated with immunophenotyping of HNSCC and further found the microbial signatures associated with prognosis. The prognostic model based on IRM microbes is helpful for early prediction of patient prognosis and assisting clin...

Comparison of robotic versus laparoscopic surgery for visceral obesity in mid –low rectal cancer: a propensity-matched analysis
AbstractObesity is becoming more and more common, and measuring visceral fat area (VFA) is a useful diagnostic technique for visceral obesity (VO). The purpose of this research is to compare the surgical results of robotic versus laparoscopic rectal surgery, with a focus on assessing the benefits of the latter method for treating both VO and mid –low rectal cancer. Patients receiving laparoscopic or robotic anterior rectal excision at Northern Jiangsu People’s Hospital’s general surgery department were included in the retrospective analysis. 242 people in all took part in the study; 121 cases were assigned to the rob...

Pharmacokinetic study of capivasertib and the CYP3A4 substrate midazolam in patients with advanced solid tumors
ConclusionThe up to 1.75-fold increase in midazolam exposure indicates capivasertib is a weak CYP3A inhibitor at 400  mg BID on an intermittent schedule. Capivasertib was well tolerated; exploratory efficacy analysis demonstrated evidence of clinical activity in this heavily pre-treated population.ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04958226. The indirect costs of human papillomavirus-related cancer in Central and Eastern Europe: years of life lost and productivity costs
CONCLUSIONS: There is a high disease burden of HPV-related cancer-related deaths in the CEE region, with a large economic impact to society due to substantial productivity losses. It is critical to implement and reinforce public health measures with the aim to reduce the incidence of HPV-related diseases, and the subsequent premature cancer deaths. Improving HPV screening and increasing vaccination programs, in both male and female populations, could help reduce this burden.PMID:38638098 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2341572 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)
