Mechanisms of tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment formation in esophageal cancer
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 28;30(16):2195-2208. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i16.2195.ABSTRACTAs a highly invasive malignancy, esophageal cancer (EC) is a global health issue, and was the eighth most prevalent cancer and the sixth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide in 2020. Due to its highly immunogenic nature, emer-ging immunotherapy approaches, such as immune checkpoint blockade, have demonstrated promising efficacy in treating EC; however, certain limitations and challenges still exist. In addition, tumors may exhibit primary or acquired resistance to immunotherapy in the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME); ...

Mast Cell-Neutrophil Communication Regulates Allergic Diseases
Yakugaku Zasshi. 2024;144(5):483-488. doi: 10.1248/yakushi.23-00154-2.ABSTRACTAllergic diseases (e.g., food allergies) are a growing problem, with increasing numbers of individuals experiencing them worldwide. Congruently, the adverse reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) associated with the administration of vaccines against emerging infectious diseases such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have become a familiar problem. Allergic diseases, which have a wide variety of symptoms, are difficult to prevent or cure; treatment is currently limited to therapeutic drugs or allergen immunotherapy. Therefore, elucidating new allergi...

Evolution of natural killer cell-targeted therapy for acute myeloid leukemia
Int J Hematol. 2024 May 1. doi: 10.1007/s12185-024-03778-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn hematologic oncology, acute myeloid leukemia (AML) presents a significant challenge due to its complex genetic landscape and resistance to conventional therapies. Despite advances in treatment, including intensive chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), the prognosis for many patients with AML remains poor. Recently, immunotherapy has emerged as a promising approach to improve outcomes by augmenting existing treatments. Natural killer (NK) cells, a subset of innate lymphoid cells, have garnered attention fo...

Formyl peptide enhances cancer immunotherapy by activating antitumoral neutrophils, and T cells
Biomed Pharmacother. 2024 Apr 30;175:116670. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116670. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeutrophils are heterogeneous and plastic, with the ability to polarize from antitumour to protumour phenotype and modulate tumour microenvironment components. While some advances have been made, the neutrophil-targeting therapy remains underexplored. Activation of formyl peptide receptors (FPRs) by formylated peptides is needed for local control of infection through the recruitment of activated neutrophils while the potential contribution of antitumour activity remains underexplored. Here, we demonstrate that neut...

Comparative effectiveness of immunotherapy and chemotherapy in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer stratified by microsatellite instability status
CONCLUSION: In this population-based study using the NCDB, immunotherapy treatment was associated with significantly improved OS compared to chemotherapy in patients with MSI-H metastatic colorectal cancer, but not in those with MSI-L/MSS metastatic colorectal cancer. Further studies are warranted to determine the optimal therapeutic approach for patients with MSI-L/MSS metastatic colorectal cancer.PMID:38689622 | PMC:PMC11056865 | DOI:10.5306/wjco.v15.i4.540 (Source: Clinical Colorectal Cancer)

Multifunctional and stimuli-responsive liposomes in hepatocellular carcinoma diagnosis and therapy
Transl Oncol. 2024 Apr 30;45:101975. doi: 10.1016/j.tranon.2024.101975. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most prevalent type of liver cancer, mainly occurring in Asian countries with an increased incidence rate globally. Currently, several kinds of therapies have been deployed for HCC therapy including surgical resection, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy. However, this tumor is still incurable, requiring novel strategies for its treatment. The nanomedicine has provided the new insights regarding the treatment of cancer that liposomes as lipid-based nanoparticles, have been wid...

Comprehensive quantifications of tumour microenvironment to predict the responsiveness to immunotherapy and prognosis for paediatric neuroblastomas
In this study, the TMEs of neuroblastoma were grouped by their genetic signatures into four distinct subtypes: immune enriched, immune desert, non-proliferative and fibrotic. An Immune Score and a Proliferation Score were constructed based on the molecular features of the subtypes to quantify the immune microenvironment or malignancy degree of cancer cells in neuroblastoma, respectively. The Immune Score correlated with a patient's response to immunotherapy; the Proliferation Score was an independent prognostic biomarker for neuroblastoma and proved to be more accurate than the existing clinical predictors. This double sco...

Erdafitinib and checkpoint inhibitors for first-line and second-line immunotherapy of hepatic, gastrointestinal, and urinary bladder carcinomas: Recent concept
World J Hepatol. 2024 Apr 27;16(4):490-493. doi: 10.4254/wjh.v16.i4.490.ABSTRACTCancer immunotherapy is administered for first-line, second-line, neoadjuvant, or adjuvant treatment of advanced, metastatic, and recurrent cancer in the liver, gastrointestinal tract, and genitourinary tract, and other solid tumors. Erdafitinib is a fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) inhibitor, and it is an adenosine triphosphate competitive inhibitor of FGFR1, FGFR2, FGFR3, and FGFR4. Immune checkpoint inhibitors are monoclonal antibodies that block programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) and its ligand that exert intrinsic antitumor mec...
