Clinical features of plastic bronchitis in children after congenital heart surgery
ConclusionsChildren with airway abnormalities or right ventricular dysfunction after CHS should be alerted to the development of PB. Pharmacological treatment such as anti-infection, corticosteroids, or improvement of right ventricular function is the basis of PB treatment, while fiberoptic bronchoscopy is an essential tool for the diagnosis and treatment of PB. ECMO assistance is a vital salvage treatment for recurrent critically ill PB patients. (Source: Italian Journal of Pediatrics)

Efficacy and Safety of Weekly Bortezomib-dexamethasone as the Third-Line Therapy for Warm Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia: a Case Series of 5 Patients
AbstractBackgroundWarm autoimmune hemolytic anaemia (wAIHA) is a chronic condition. Despite the high initial responses seen with the first two treatment lines (corticosteroids and rituximab), relapses are frequent. Anecdotal data suggests the efficacy of bortezomib in relapsed/refractory (RR) wAIHA. This case series aimed to evaluate bortezomib as a third-line therapy in wAIHA in terms of efficacy, safety, and prospects of achieving treatment-free remission (TFR). Five adult patients  ≥ 18 years of age with RR wAIHA after corticosteroids and rituximab were included over 1.5 years. Patients were treated uniformly wi...

The Role of Ultrasound in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Meniscal Injuries
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review evaluates the current understanding of the role of ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment of meniscal disorders.Recent FindingsUltrasound (US) demonstrates similar sensitivity and specificity when compared to magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of meniscal injuries when compared to arthroscopy. Meniscal extrusion (ME) under US can be a reliable metric to evaluate for meniscal root tears in knees with and without osteoarthritis (OA). Sonographic ME is associated with development of OA in knees without OA. US following allograft meniscal transplant may be useful in predicting ...

Immunosuppressive treatment results in patients with primary IgA nephropathy in Turkiye; the data from TSN-GOLD working group
CONCLUSION: CS can significantly improve remission in high-risk Turkish IgAN patients, despite the reliance on non-quantitative endpoints for favorable renal outcomes. Key predictors of remission include baseline proteinuria and specific histological markers. It is crucial to carefully weigh the risks and benefits of immunosuppressive therapy for these patients.PMID:38637275 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2341787 (Source: Renal Failure)

Clinical utilization of airway inflammatory biomarkers in the prediction and monitoring of clinical outcomes in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Expert Rev Mol Diagn. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1080/14737159.2024.2344777. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) accounts for 545 million people living with chronic respiratory disorders and is the third leading cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. COPD is a progressive disease, characterized by episodes of acute worsening of symptoms such as cough, dyspnea, and sputum production.AREAS COVERED: Airway inflammation is a prominent feature of COPD. Chronic airway inflammation results in airway structural remodeling and emphysema. Persistent airway inflammation is a ...

Diagnosis and Management of Cardiac Sarcoidosis: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001240. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiac sarcoidosis is an infiltrative cardiomyopathy that results from granulomatous inflammation of the myocardium and may present with high-grade conduction disease, ventricular arrhythmias, and right or left ventricular dysfunction. Over the past several decades, the prevalence of cardiac sarcoidosis has increased. Definitive histological confirmation is often not possible, so clinicians frequently face uncertainty about the accuracy of diagnosis. Hence, the likelihood of cardiac sarcoidosis should be thought of as a continuum (d...

Circulating Tumor Cells and Thromboembolic Events in Patients with Glioblastoma
Hamostaseologie. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1055/a-2251-6766. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients with glioblastoma (GBM) are at increased risk for arterial and venous thromboembolism (TE). Risk factors include surgery, the use of corticosteroids, radiation, and chemotherapy, but also prothrombotic characteristics of the tumor itself such as expression of tissue factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, or podoplanin. Although distant metastases are extremely rare in this tumor entity, circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have been detected in a significant proportion of GBM patients, potentially linking local tumor growth charac...
