Autoimmune encephalitis mediated by postvaccination and infection of SARS-CoV-2 in a patient with a narcolepsy type 1
CONCLUSION: The patient fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for autoimmune encephalitis with subacute onset. COVID-19 infection and vaccination could constitute a risk in a patient with narcolepsy as in this case and, could help to provide better understanding of the implication of immune-mediated processes in the pathophysiology of the diseases.PMID:38682764 | DOI:10.33588/rn.7809.2023306 (Source: Revista de Neurologia)

Combination treatment of inflammatory bowel disease: Present status and future perspectives
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 21;30(15):2068-2080. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i15.2068.ABSTRACTThe treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially those with severe or refractory disease, represents an important challenge for the clinical gastroenterologist. It seems to be no exaggeration to say that in these patients, not only the scientific background of the gastroenterologist is tested, but also the abundance of "gifts" that he should possess (insight, intuition, determination, ability to take initiative, etc.) for the successful outcome of the treatment. In daily clinical practice, depending on the ...

Oxfendazole Nitazoxanide combination in experimental neurocysticercosis - anti-inflammatory and cysticidal effects
Exp Parasitol. 2024 Apr 25:108764. doi: 10.1016/j.exppara.2024.108764. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeurocysticercosis (NCC) is a parasitic infection caused by the larval stage of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. The complications of NCC include seizures, headaches, cognitive impairment, and focal neurological deficits. In addition to antiparasitic drugs and surgery, the management of NCC includes the use of corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and control symptoms. The traditional treatment with albendazole and praziquantel has not been altered over 30 years and present several side effects. There are other anti-helmi...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1696: Updates in Cancer Cachexia: Clinical Management and Pharmacologic Interventions
abbro Despite a better understanding of the mechanisms causing cancer cachexia (CC) and development of promising pharmacologic and supportive care interventions, CC persists as an underdiagnosed and undertreated condition. CC contributes to fatigue, poor quality of life, functional impairment, increases treatment related toxicity, and reduces survival. The core elements of CC such as weight loss and poor appetite should be identified early. Currently, addressing contributing conditions (hypothyroidism, hypogonadism, and adrenal insufficiency), managing nutrition impact symptoms leading to decreased oral intake (nausea,...

Severe Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) in a Patient with X-Linked Agammaglobulinemia; Treatment with TBE Virus IgG Positive Plasma, Clinical Outcome and T Cell Responses
ConclusionTBEV IgG-positive plasma given to an XLA patient with TBE without evident adverse reactions may have contributed to a positive clinical outcome. Similar approaches could offer a promising foundation for researching therapeutic options for patients with humoral immunodeficiencies. Importantly, a robust CD8+ T cell response was observed after infection despite the lack of B cells and indicates that these patients can clear acute viral infections and could benefit from future vaccination programs. Pharmacological Basis of Differences in Dose Response, Dose Equivalence, and Duration of Action of Inhaled Corticosteroids
ConclusionIn a real-world clinical setting where there may be poor adherence to prescribed therapy, our findings suggest a significant therapeutic advantage for longer-acting ICS molecules in patients with asthma. (Source: Advances in Therapy)

Perioperative steroid injection in elbow arthroscopy
Acta Orthop Belg. 2024 Mar;90(1):67-71. doi: 10.52628/90.1.12493.ABSTRACTThe goal of the present study was to evaluate the incidence of infection after perioperative intra-articular steroid injection during elbow arthroscopy. Starting from May 2019, we prospectively included all patients that underwent an elbow arthroscopy for various indications. All patients received preoperative antibiotics intravenously and a corticosteroid injection immediately after portal closure. Patients who needed ligamentous repair and aged below 18 years old were excluded. Final follow up of all patients was 3 months. In total, 108 elbow arthro...

Electrical stimulation of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus in male mice can regulate inflammation without affecting the heart rate
CONCLUSIONS: For the first time we show that a regimen of eDMNS which does not cause bradycardia alleviates LPS-induced inflammation. These eDMNS anti-inflammatory effects require an intact vagus nerve and are not associated with corticosteroid alterations. eDMNS also decreases inflammation and improves survival in a model of polymicrobial sepsis. These findings are of interest for further studies exploring bioelectronic anti-inflammatory approaches targeting the brainstem DMN.PMID:38670240 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbi.2024.04.027 (Source: Brain, Behavior, and Immunity)
