Polyposis of gastrointestinal tract after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination: a report of two cases
Clin Endosc. 2024 Apr 12. doi: 10.5946/ce.2023.268. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCronkhite-Canada syndrome is a rare gastrointestinal polyposis syndrome with distinctive clinical features and endoscopic findings. Diagnosis can be challenging without suspicion, and the disease carries high mortality due to complications such as infection, gastrointestinal bleeding, and malignancies. This paper presents two cases of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome occurring after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mRNA vaccination. Both cases exhibited typical clinical findings, including hypogeusia, onychodystrophy, alopecia, and weight loss. T...

Spatially resolved immune exhaustion within the alloreactive microenvironment predicts liver transplant rejection
Sci Adv. 2024 Apr 12;10(15):eadm8841. doi: 10.1126/sciadv.adm8841. Epub 2024 Apr 12.ABSTRACTAllograft rejection is common following clinical organ transplantation, but defining specific immune subsets mediating alloimmunity has been elusive. Calcineurin inhibitor dose escalation, corticosteroids, and/or lymphocyte depleting antibodies have remained the primary options for treatment of clinical rejection episodes. Here, we developed a highly multiplexed imaging mass cytometry panel to study the immune response in archival biopsies from 79 liver transplant (LT) recipients with either no rejection (NR), acute T cell-mediated ...

Treatment of Netherton Syndrome in Pediatrics with Upadacitinib
CONCLUSIONS: Initiation of Upadacitinib at a daily dose of 15 mg yielded significant therapeutic benefits within a short timeframe. This study marks the first documented use of Upadacitinib in pediatric Netherton syndrome treatment. This case highlights the efficacy of Upadacitinib in treating Netherton syndrome, particularly in pediatric patients. Further studies are warranted to elucidate its long-term effects and optimal dosing regimens.PMID:38607195 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Cardiovascular risk and inflammation in a population with autoimmune diseases: a narrative review
Front Immunol. 2024 Mar 28;15:1380372. doi: 10.3389/fimmu.2024.1380372. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTJuvenile Systemic Connective Tissue Diseases (JSCTD) are a heterogeneous group of chronic autoimmune diseases, associated with dyslipidemia and increased cardiovascular risk are related. Studies from the last 10 years, from 2013 to 2022, on lipid profiles in JSCTD were collected. Different studies on lipid profiles in children affected by JSCTD were selected, because the aim is to analyze the cardiovascular risk and the possibility of atherosclerosis in these patients in whom, sometimes, corticosteroid therapies and immunosuppr...

Ketorolac Injections for Musculoskeletal Conditions: A Narrative Review
Clin Med Res. 2024 Mar;22(1):19-27. doi: 10.3121/cmr.2024.1847.ABSTRACTMusculoskeletal conditions of the upper and lower extremities are commonly treated with corticosteroid injections. Ketorolac, a parenteral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, represents an alternative injectant for common shoulder, hip, and knee conditions. A review of the current literature was conducted on the efficacy of ketorolac injection in musculoskeletal diseases. Several studies support the use and efficacy of ketorolac injection in subacromial bursitis, adhesive capsulitis, and hip and knee osteoarthritis. Given the systemic effects of glucoc...

Relapse in ocular tuberculosis: relapse rate, risk factors and clinical management in a non-endemic country
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that approximately one-third of patients with OTB will experience relapse after achieving clinical inactivity. The initial disease course and poor response to treatment predict the likelihood of relapse in the long-term follow-up. Topical corticosteroids were particularly effective in relapse presenting as anterior uveitis.PMID:38609164 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2024-325207 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Antitubercular drug-induced lichen planus: A case study with a mini literature review
CONCLUSION: Lichenoid drug eruptions are characterized by type IV hypersensitivity reactions, and rechallenge is required to ensure safer treatment since the risk of disseminated and multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis increases with the cessation of antitubercular therapy.PMID:38605770 | PMC:PMC11006073 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_499_23 (Source: Primary Care)

Association of blood eosinophils with corticosteroid treatment failure stratified by smoking status among inpatients with AECOPD
CONCLUSION: Elevated blood eosinophils are associated with a lower rate of corticosteroid treatment failure, regardless of smoking status. Smoking does not modify the association between blood eosinophil level and corticosteroid treatment failure among inpatients with AECOPD.PMID:38609180 | DOI:10.1136/bmjresp-2023-001634 (Source: Respiratory Care)
