Early experience with sequential intravesical gemcitabine and docetaxel for micropapillary variant non-muscle invasive bladder cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Gem/Doce with Val/Doce rescue appears to have activity against carefully selected non-muscle invasive MPUC with favorable histology. Larger prospective trials are needed to validate these results.PMID:38796357 | DOI:10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.05.006 (Source: Urologic Oncology)

Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma of the lips: 25 years of experience in a northeast Brazilian population
CONCLUSIONS: SCC was more frequent in male patients, while BCC showed more frequency in female patients. Both neoplasms mainly affect the lower lip. Understanding the epidemiological profile of these lesions in the lip, as well as their etiology and clinical features, is fundamental for appropriate clinical conduct and the creation and/or amplification of preventive measures.PMID:38794936 | DOI:10.4317/medoral.26454 (Source: Medicina Oral, Patologia Oral y Cirugia Bucal)

Salivary cortisol levels in patients with potentially malignant oral disorders and oral mucosal cancer: a case-control study
CONCLUSIONS: The increase in salivary cortisol levels in patients with PMD and SCC, is related to stress conditions, being able to generate alterations tending to immunosuppression of the cellular microenvironment.PMID:38794939 | DOI:10.4317/medoral.26606 (Source: Medicina Oral, Patologia Oral y Cirugia Bucal)

Insights into incipient oral squamous cell carcinoma: a comprehensive south-american study
CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest cohort of incipient oral squamous cell carcinoma patients, which raises awareness of clinicians' inspection acuteness by demonstrating the most frequent clinical aspects of this disease, potentially improving oral cancer secondary prevention strategies.PMID:38794942 | DOI:10.4317/medoral.26551 (Source: Medicina Oral, Patologia Oral y Cirugia Bucal)

Functional characterization of single nucleotide polymorphic variants of DNA repair enzyme NEIL1 in South Asian populations
In this study, the most common South Asian variants of NEIL1 were expressed, purified, and functionally characterized. All tested variants exhibited activities and substrate specificities similar to wild type (wt)-NEIL1 on high-molecular weight DNA containing an array of oxidatively-induced base lesions. On short oligodeoxynucleotides (17-mers) containing either a site-specific apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) site, thymine glycol (ThyGly), or AFB1-FapyGua, P206L-NEIL1 was catalytically comparable to wt-NEIL1, while the activities of NEIL1 variants Q67K and T278I on these substrates were ≈2-fold reduced. Variant T103A had a gr...

Phospholipid isotope tracing suggests β-catenin-driven suppression of phosphatidylcholine metabolism in hepatocellular carcinoma
Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Cell Biol Lipids. 2024 May 23:159514. doi: 10.1016/j.bbalip.2024.159514. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTActivating mutations in the CTNNB1 gene encoding β-catenin are among the most frequently observed oncogenic alterations in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Profound alterations in lipid metabolism, including increases in fatty acid oxidation and transformation of the phospholipidome, occur in HCC with CTNNB1 mutations, but it is unclear what mechanisms give rise to these changes. We employed untargeted lipidomics and targeted isotope tracing to measure phospholipid synthesis activity in an inducib...

Clinicopathologic Analysis and Prognostic Factors for Survival in Patients with Operable Ampullary Carcinoma: A Multi-Institutional Retrospective Experience
Conclusions: Nodal status and a positive surgical margin were independent predictors of a poor mOS for patients with ampullary carcinomas. Additional studies are required to explore the role of adjuvant therapy in patients with ampullary carcinomas.PMID:38793001 | PMC:PMC11122928 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60050818 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

BIA-ALCL and BIA-SCC: Updates on Clinical Features and Genetic Mutations for Latest Recommendations
Medicina (Kaunas). 2024 May 10;60(5):793. doi: 10.3390/medicina60050793.ABSTRACTBreast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) and Breast Implant-Associated Squamous Cell Carcinoma (BIA-SCC) are emerging neoplastic complications related to breast implants. While BIA-ALCL is often linked to macrotextured implants, current evidence does not suggest an implant-type association for BIA-SCC. Chronic inflammation and genetics have been hypothesized as key pathogenetic players, although for both conditions, the exact mechanisms and specific risks related to breast implants are yet to be established. While the...

Estimating the long-term survival of unresectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer based on cure model analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Radiotherapy, especially when combined with ICIs, offers a potential cure for a proportion of patients with unresectable stage III NSCLC. Tumor burden and ICIs are key predictors of long-term survival. The study suggested 4-year PFS and 5-year OS as surrogate endpoints for cure and long-term survival assessment.PMID:38795813 | DOI:10.1016/j.radonc.2024.110341 (Source: Radiotherapy and Oncology : journal of the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology)

Multimodal Therapy Approaches for NUT Carcinoma by Dual Combination of Oncolytic Virus < em > Talimogene Laherparepvec < /em > with Small Molecule Inhibitors
Viruses. 2024 May 14;16(5):775. doi: 10.3390/v16050775.ABSTRACTNUT (nuclear-protein-in-testis) carcinoma (NC) is a highly aggressive tumor disease. Given that current treatment regimens offer a median survival of six months only, it is likely that this type of tumor requires an extended multimodal treatment approach to improve prognosis. In an earlier case report, we could show that an oncolytic herpes simplex virus (T-VEC) is functional in NC patients. To identify further combination partners for T-VEC, we have investigated the anti-tumoral effects of T-VEC and five different small molecule inhibitors (SMIs) alone and in ...
