Anesthesia using remimazolam during coronary artery bypass surgery in a patient with decreased left ventricular function
Anesthetic record of the patient. Key Clinical MessageRemimazolam is a new benzodiazepine sedative and has the characteristic of causing minimal effects on circulation. This case indicates that it can be considered as an option for anesthesia management of patients with decreased cardiac function.AbstractSome patients who undergo cardiac surgery have reduced cardiac function, which can often make anesthesia management difficult owing to severe hypotension at the time of anesthesia induction. Therefore, it is important to select drugs that cause minimal circulatory depression. On the other hand, in 2020, the use of remimazo...

Response to Letter: Update of risk factors for surgical site infection in clean-contaminated wounds after gastroenterological surgery: An analysis of 1,878 participants enrolled in 2 recent randomized control trials for the prevention of surgical site infection
We read with great interest the important work by Maemoto et al to update known risk factors for surgical site infections (SSIs) after elective gastroenterological surgery in Japan.1 We conducted a similar retrospective analysis of data from South Australia, aiming to determine local demographic and clinical predictors of SSI in a cohort of selected operati ons. Middle meatus microbiome in patients with eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis in a Japanese population
Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common chronic inflammatory disease and is subdivided into eosinophilic and noneosinophilic forms. There are few reports investigating the nasal microbiome and its pathological functions in patients with CRS. (Source: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology)

Development and validation of a clinical prediction model for detecting coronary heart disease in middle-aged and elderly people: a diagnostic study
ConclusionOverall, the development and validation of the multivariate model combined the laboratory and clinical parameters of patients with CHD, which could be beneficial to the individualized prediction of middle-aged and elderly people, and helped to facilitate clinical assessments and decisions during treatment and management of CHD. Common methodological pitfalls in ICI pneumonitis risk prediction studies
ConclusionsStudies with low risk of bias in their methodology are lacking in the existing literature. High-quality risk factor identification and risk model development studies are urgently required by the community to give the best chance of them progressing into a clinically deployable risk prediction model. Recommendations and alternative approaches for reducing the risk of bias were also discussed to guide future studies. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

NASA delivers bounty of asteroid samples to Earth
Most of the small asteroids that enter Earth’s atmosphere end their plunge in screaming, fiery violence. But today, after detaching from NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, a capsule carrying asteroid samples descended gently by parachute before touching down in the Utah desert. The cupful of pebbles and grit it delivered—the culmination of 7 years of effort and $1 billion of expense— is only the third sample of an asteroid ever returned to Earth, and it’s the largest haul of extraterrestrial material NASA has collected since the Apollo Moon missions.
Scientists say it promises to offer new insights into the earl...

Incidence and risk factors for Graves' orbitopathy in patients who underwent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive treatment during medical treatment for Graves' disease: investigation of 1,553 cases with newly diagnosed Graves' disease and proposal of a predictive score
This study aimed to clarify the incidence and risk factors for GO treated with AIIST and propose a predictive score, among newly diagnosed Graves' disease (GD) patients in Japan. A total of 1,553 GD patients who were newly diagnosed during the year 2011 were investigated. AIIST included local and/or systemic glucocorticoid administration and retrobulbar irradiation. A multivariable Cox proportional hazards model was used to investigate the risk factors for GO underwent AIIST during medical treatment, including at diagnosis, of GD. Then, a GO score was created by summing each point assigned to risk factors based on their co...
