A community cluster of influenza A(H3N2) virus infection with reduced susceptibility to baloxavir due to a PA E199G substitution in Japan, February to March 2023
Euro Surveill. 2023 Sep;28(39). doi: 10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.39.2300501.ABSTRACTA community cluster of influenza A(H3N2) caused by viruses with an E199G substitution in PA was detected in Nara, Japan, between February and March 2023. The three patients with these mutant viruses had not received antiviral treatment before specimen collection but patients in the same hospital had. The sequences of the mutant viruses were closely related, suggesting clonal spread in Nara. They showed reduced susceptibility to baloxavir in vitro; however, the clinical significance of the PA E199G substitution remains unclear.PMID:37768560...

Marked reduction in the incidence of transfusion-transmitted hepatitis B virus infection after the introduction of antibody to hepatitis B core antigen and individual donation nucleic acid amplification screening in Japan
DISCUSSION: The incidence of observed TT-HBV cases has significantly reduced to 0.19 per million in the ID-NAT screening period. OBI-related TT-HBV was eliminated by anti-HBc screening. Established TT-HBV cases were caused by blood products with large plasma volumes containing extremely low HBV concentrations derived from blood donors at a very early infection stage.PMID:37767806 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17546 (Source: Transfusion)

Rapid health technology assessment of the novel endonuclease inhibitor baloxavir for the treatment of influenza
J Chemother. 2023 Sep 28:1-16. doi: 10.1080/1120009X.2023.2263270. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThrough a Rapid Health Technology Assessment (RHTA), we evaluated the efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of baloxavir in the treatment of influenza, providing the necessary scientific information and evidence-based basis for healthcare professionals and health insurance decision-makers in making rational selections. Through systematic searches of Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, The Cochrane Register of Clinical Trials database and the official website of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) agencies, we collected systematic ...

Incidence, Predictors, and Outcome Associated With Ventricular Tachycardia or Fibrillation in Patients Undergoing Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention for Acute Myocardial Infarction
CONCLUSIONS: The results clearly indicated that VT/VF is still a serious complications of AMI. We need to identify patients at high risk of developing VT/VF for careful observation and appropriate intervention.PMID:37766557 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-23-0023 (Source: Circulation Journal)

Assessment of factors associated with improved glycemic control after switching from intermittently scanned to real-time continuous glucose monitoring in Japanese patients with type 1 diabetes
Endocr J. 2023 Sep 26. doi: 10.1507/endocrj.EJ23-0125. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe advantages of real-time continuous glucose monitoring (rtCGM) over intermittently scanned CGM (isCGM) reportedly include lower glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels as well as reduced glycemic variability. However, there have been few studies of the effect of switching from isCGM to rtCGM on glycemic control, as well as the specific factors underlying any observed improvements. To that end, all patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus who used the DEXCOM rtCGM device (Terumo Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) at our institution were reviewed, and 1...

Boredom and engagement at work: do they have different antecedents and consequences?
This study aimed to demonstrate the empirical distinctiveness of boredom at work and work engagement in relation to their potential antecedents (job demands and job resources) and consequences (psychological distress and turnover intention) based on the Job Demands-Resources model. A three-wave longitudinal survey was conducted among registered monitors of an Internet survey company in Japan. The questionnaire included scales for boredom at work, work engagement, psychological distress, and turnover intention as well as participants' job characteristics and demographic variables. The hypothesized model was evaluated via st...

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on assisted reproductive technology treatment under voluntary lockdown in Japan
Reprod Med Biol. 2023 Sep 25;22(1):e12541. doi: 10.1002/rmb2.12541. eCollection 2023 Jan-Dec.ABSTRACTTo investigate the impact of a state of emergency (i.e., voluntary lockdown) during the COVID-19 epidemic, we conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Japanese nationwide registry. In comparison with those during 2019, the number of treatment cycles decreased in April 2020 (-9.5%) to its lowest point in May (-24.1%). The magnitude of the decline was three times larger for frozen cycles (-37.0%) than for fresh cycles (-12.4%). The decrease was significantly smaller for women aged <35 years (-31.0%) than for the ol...

Research on Occupational Poisoning and Biological Monitoring
CONCLUSION: The health management of workers handling chemical substances at occupational sites will be shifted to autonomous management. However, it should be noted that only biological monitoring can detect and prove true exposure. Particularly, risk assessment by biological monitoring is necessary for substances that are suspected to be absorbed through the skin, and the measurement methods used should continue to be developed and refined. The significance of biological monitoring will continue to increase.PMID:37766566 | DOI:10.1539/sangyoeisei.2023-026-A (Source: Sangyo Eiseigaku Zasshi : Journal of Occupational Health)

Development and characterization of expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat markers for Anaphalis margaritacea var. yedoensis (Asteraceae)
Genes Genet Syst. 2023 Sep 26. doi: 10.1266/ggs.23-00037. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRNA-sequencing was used to develop 16 microsatellite markers for the pearly everlasting, Anaphalis margaritacea var. yedoensis (Franch. et Sav.) Ohwi (Asteraceae), which inhabits gravel bars throughout the Japanese archipelago. The mean number of alleles for these 16 markers in two populations in the Hokkaido and Shizuoka Prefectures, was 3.5 and 4.0, respectively, while the mean expected heterozygosity was 0.525 and 0.560, respectively, with a significant genetic differentiation between the two populations. All markers could also be am...

Are Dental Procedures Associated With Pyogenic Vertebral Osteomyelitis?
CONCLUSION: Dental procedures were not associated with an increased risk of subsequent PVO in this case-crossover study. The effectiveness of antibiotic prophylaxis was not demonstrated in the additional analysis that categorized exposure according to the use of antibiotic prophylaxis. Our results suggest that the association between dental procedures and PVO may have been overestimated. Maintaining good oral hygiene may be important in preventing the development of PVO. The indications for antibiotic prophylaxis before dental procedures should be reconsidered in view of the potential risk of adverse drug reactions to anti...
