Antibody Testing in Atypical Optic Neuritis.
Authors: Truong-Le M, Chwalisz B Abstract Optic neuritis (ON) is a common manifestation of central nervous system demyelinating disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS). The last two decades have seen increasing recognition of atypical optic neuritis syndromes, driven in large part by characterization of demyelinating diseases associated with antibodies to aquaporin 4 (AQP4) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG). Given their increased importance in the workup of ON, familiarity with serological tests for ON has become essential for ophthalmologists. This review will discuss technological aspects, performan...

Application of Metagenomic Sequencing in the Diagnosis of Infectious Uveitis.
Conclusion: compared to existing diagnostic methods, metagenomic deep sequencing is a sensitive, unbiased, and comprehensive technique with great potential for diagnosing the causative pathogens of cases of infectious uveitis. However, many issues remain to be addressed in the process of developing this technology, including but not limited to the potentially overwhelming amount of information generated, definition of diagnostic thresholds, demonstration of validity, contamination, and cost. Advantages of Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) for Mass Eye and Ear Special Issue.
Authors: Ahmed AA, Hatch KM Abstract This review summarizes the advantages of Small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), including improved patient intraoperative experience, improved postoperative ocular surface, low incidence of regression, low re-treatment rates, and advantageous biomechanical corneal stability. Visual and refractive outcomes are similar to those achieved with LASIK, notably in large population studies. Since the inception of SMILE almost 10 years ago, the procedure has been rapidly growing in popularity. With the implementation of the novel SMILE technology in their practice, refractive ...

Advances in steroid sparing medical management of active thyroid eye disease.
Authors: Liou VD, Yoon MK Abstract Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the orbit and the most common extrathyroidal manifestation of Graves disease. The release of pro-inflammatory cytokines is associated with inflammation of the ocular surface and lacrimal gland along with periorbital skin erythema and edema. Resultant tissue remodeling, fibrosis, and fat deposition can impart permanent physical changes to the ocular adnexa with effects on function and cosmesis. These changes occur in the active phase of disease, and it is during this time that steroids are often relied on to help al...
