Epidemiology of Uveitis in a tertiary care centre in Portugal.
Conclusion: In our referral region, 72% of uveitis cases were correctly identified surpassing other studies. There was a higher rate of intermediate uveitis and lower number of panuveitis cases when compared to a previous Portuguese study. Extensive monitoring of the development of uveitis by international multicentre prospective studies could be useful for increasing practitioner awareness and diagnostic approach. How Do Patients Feel About Visual Field Testing? Analysis of Subjective Perception of Standard Automated Perimetry.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients' perception of cooperation in VFT is a poor predictor of its reliability. Although young cooperative patients may be aware of their good cooperation, even the youngest are unaware of their poor performance. This emphasizes the importance of giving proper directions to all patients during VFT to obtain better reliability indices. Younger, healthy patients are more aware of their health status, than those with a damaged VF, regardless of age. Therefore, illness education is crucial in all glaucoma patients. Highly Expressed Amyloid Beta-42 Of Aqueous Humor In Patients With Neovascular Macular Degeneration.
Authors: Zhu J, Su T, Wang M, Li M, Liu L, Wang F Abstract Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a type of macular degeneration disease, and amyloid beta (aβ) is the main component of vitreous warts in AMD patients. Neovascular AMD (nAMD) is the most serious type of AMD, but its pathogenesis remains unclear. The aim of this study was to detect the expression of aβ42 in the aqueous humor of nAMD patients and to evaluate whether aβ42 expression of aqueous humor is correlated with cognitive function in these patients. Methods: A total of 70 patients were enrolled in this study, including...

Preoperative Management of MGD with Vectored Thermal Pulsation before Cataract Surgery: A Prospective, Controlled Clinical Trial.
This study was a prospective, examiner-masked contralateral eye clinical trial. Patients previously diagnosed with MGD undergoing uncomplicated cataract surgery in two eyes were enrolled. The eye perceived by the patient to be more symptomatic of MGD received a 12 min vectored thermal pulsation treatment using the LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation System, and was referred to as the LipiFlow-surgery eye. The contralateral eye then served as the nonLipiFlow-surgery eye. Patients with MGD not undergoing cataract surgery were enrolled as the control group. Within the control group, the eye that received LipiFlow treatment was conside...

Identification of Postoperative Foveal Displacement after Macular Surgery for Idiopathic Epiretinal Membrane.
Discussion: Most of the eyes with iERM showed a foveal dislocation after the macular surgery. Our findings emphasize the necessity to carefully study of the OCT images in such eyes after the surgery as the manually determined postoperative foveal position may be in a different vertical or horizontal plane than the machine-generated pre- and postoperative overlay for the foveal position. Our findings may thus be helpful for surgeons to avoid misinterpretation when evaluating OCT images pre- and postoperatively. Antibody Testing in Atypical Optic Neuritis.
Authors: Truong-Le M, Chwalisz B Abstract Optic neuritis (ON) is a common manifestation of central nervous system demyelinating disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS). The last two decades have seen increasing recognition of atypical optic neuritis syndromes, driven in large part by characterization of demyelinating diseases associated with antibodies to aquaporin 4 (AQP4) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG). Given their increased importance in the workup of ON, familiarity with serological tests for ON has become essential for ophthalmologists. This review will discuss technological aspects, performan...

Advances in steroid sparing medical management of active thyroid eye disease.
Authors: Liou VD, Yoon MK Abstract Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the orbit and the most common extrathyroidal manifestation of Graves disease. The release of pro-inflammatory cytokines is associated with inflammation of the ocular surface and lacrimal gland along with periorbital skin erythema and edema. Resultant tissue remodeling, fibrosis, and fat deposition can impart permanent physical changes to the ocular adnexa with effects on function and cosmesis. These changes occur in the active phase of disease, and it is during this time that steroids are often relied on to help al...
