Ocular Manifestations of Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses
Semin Ophthalmol. 2021 Jun 9:1-14. doi: 10.1080/08820538.2021.1936571. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are a group of rare neurodegenerative storage disorders associated with devastating visual prognosis, with an incidence of 1/1,000,000 in the United States and comparatively higher incidence in European countries. The pathophysiological mechanisms causing NCLs occur due to enzymatic or transmembrane defects in various sub-cellular organelles including lysosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, and cytoplasmic vesicles. NCLs are categorized into different types depending upon the underlying cause...

A Retrospective Comparison of Trabeculectomy, Baerveldt Glaucoma Implant, and Microinvasive Glaucoma Surgeries in a Three-Year Follow-Up
Conclusion: MIGS can reduce the number of medication classes, thus increasing patient compliance and reducing topical ocular toxicity and general costs. Trabeculectomy remains the most effective option but still presents a percentage of failures that might increase during follow-up.PMID:34092187 | DOI:10.1080/08820538.2021.1931356 (Source: Seminars in Ophthalmology)

Cataract Following Pars Plana Vitrectomy: A Review
Conclusion: Cataract surgery in vitrectomized eyes presents with more technical difficulties, is more challenging and often has a higher risk of intraoperative and postoperative complications than in non vitrectomized eyes. There is no standardized technique or management in these cases; therefore, it requires more precautions during surgery.PMID:34096468 | DOI:10.1080/08820538.2021.1924799 (Source: Seminars in Ophthalmology)

Semin Ophthalmol. 2021 Jun 4:1-10. doi: 10.1080/08820538.2021.1890792. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFemtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) offers a level of precision, accuracy and customization that is not possible with manual phacoemulsification (MP). With the increase of patient expectations and premium intraocular lens utilization in the era of refractive cataract surgery, predictability and accuracy has become of utmost importance. FLACS has four main functions: creation of a consistently sized round capsulotomy, treatment of keratometric astigmatism with arcuate incisions, construction of clear corneal ...

"A prospective study on the clinical course and proposed morphological classification scheme of microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis."
Conclusion: Microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis can have a variable clinical presentation, the course of each being different depending on the host and ocular surface factors. Though considered as a self-limiting disease, central and diffuse coarse variety (Type1c&1d) required long-term topical immunosuppressants and follow-up.PMID:34010100 | DOI:10.1080/08820538.2021.1923762 (Source: Seminars in Ophthalmology)

Predicted and Measured Changes in Posterior Corneal Astigmatism after Uncomplicated Femtosecond Assisted LASIK (FsLASIK) and Microkeratome LASIK Correction for Myopia and Low Astigmatism
Semin Ophthalmol. 2021 May 19:1-7. doi: 10.1080/08820538.2021.1928243. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPurpose: To compare predicted and measured changes in astigmatism at the posterior corneal surface (PCS) after FsLASIK or LASIK.Methods: Astigmatism was measured at both corneal surfaces (PentacamTM) before and 3 months after unremarkable FFsLASIK (roup 1,n = 100) or LLASIK (roup 2,n = 100) for myopia (-7.25DS to -0.75DS) and low astigmatism (≤1.00DC). Photoablation was achieved using Schwind Amaris750STM laser (Aberration Free profile, centered on corneal vertex). Pre-and postop astigmatic data, according to subjective ...

Polymorphisms in < em > CRYAA < /em > Promoter with Susceptibility to Cataract: A Meta-Analysis
Semin Ophthalmol. 2021 May 19:1-8. doi: 10.1080/08820538.2021.1903943. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAim: Polymorphisms in alpha A crystallin (CRYAA) gene have been implicated in susceptibility to cataracts, but some published studies have reported inconclusive results. Our study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis investigating the association between polymorphisms in CRYAA and susceptibility to cataracts. Methods: The PubMed, Excerpta Medica Database, Cochrane Library and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched for all articles published up to 20 March 2019 that reported cataracts and three polymorphisms (rs376...
