A phase 2, open-label study of ibrutinib plus rituximab in Japanese patients with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of ibrutinib-rituximab in Japanese patients with WM. Patients received ibrutinib 420 mg orally once daily plus weekly rituximab 375 mg/m2 IV (8 infusions total). The primary end point was major response rate (MRR; PR or better) by Independent Review Committee assessment. Secondary endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS), safety, pharmacokinetics, and biomarkers. Primary analysis was conducted in 16 patients [baseline, treatment naïve: 8 (50.0%); relapsed/refractory WM: 8 (50.0%)] who received ibrutinib-rituximab, after all patients completed Week 57 or end of treatment. ...

COVID-19 Vaccine Injury Compensation Program: Lessons Learned From a Review of 10 Implementing Countries
This article reviewed the Vaccine Injury Compensation Programs in 10 major countries to present implications for improving the Korean system. Expanding the scope of national accountability is essential to compensate for the consequences of adhering to national policies during public health crises. Therefore, valuable insight can be obtained from examining the systems in Germany, Japan, and Taiwan, which have implemented more relaxed criteria for determining causality in compensation cases; Thailand's system, which provides the mandatory payment of preliminary compensation for damage caused by vaccination; systems in German...

Control of pleural effusion with prednisolone in a patient with yellow nail syndrome: A case report
Exp Ther Med. 2024 Mar 22;27(5):224. doi: 10.3892/etm.2024.12512. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTYellow nail syndrome (YNS) can induce bilateral exudative pleural effusion; however, to the best of our knowledge, no standard treatment for YNS has been established. The present study describes a patient with YNS for whom the pleural effusion was controlled by prednisolone. A 73-year-old man was referred to the University of Tsukuba Hospital (Ibaraki, Japan) complaining of shortness of breath, which was diagnosed as being due to bilateral pleural effusion. Based on the presence of yellowing and growth retardation of the toenails...

Efficacy of Cranial Orthosis for Plagiocephaly Based on 2D and 3D Evaluation
Conclusion Cranial orthosis treatment was effective in correcting deformational plagiocephaly in infants, as demonstrated by improvements in both 2D and 3D metrics. Patients with more severe initial deformities and those who underwent treatment at a younger age showed greater improvement.PMID:38596144 | PMC:PMC11001441 | DOI:10.1055/a-2222-1494 (Source: Archives of Plastic Surgery)

International Microsurgery Club and World Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery Webinar: Career Building in Microsurgery
Arch Plast Surg. 2024 Apr 8;51(2):258-261. doi: 10.1055/a-2229-3420. eCollection 2024 Mar.ABSTRACTCareer building can be challenging for young surgeons, especially when topics such as lifestyle, work-life balance and subspecialization arise. Suggestions and advice from senior colleagues is very valuable but many young surgeons do not have such opportunities or are limited to a few senior surgeons. The International Microsurgery Club (IMC), in collaboration with the World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, organized a combined webinar for this topic and invited world renowned microsurgery masters polled by the IMC memb...

A Case of 17 α-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase Deficiency Diagnosed at 45 Years of Age with Hyperaldosteronism
Intern Med. 2024 Apr 9. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.3084-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACT17α-hydroxylase deficiency is a type of congenital adrenocortical hyperplasia that is typically diagnosed in childhood or adolescence. It manifests as hypertension with gonadal dysfunction as the primary symptom. We herein report 17α-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase deficiency (17OHD) diagnosed at the age of 45 years. The patient presented with hypertension, irregular menstruation, and hyperaldosteronism. The clinical manifestations of 17OHD vary based on the specific variant pattern of CYP17A1. In this case, the variant was c.157_159 TCC...

Successful Gastrografin Vermifugation for Taenia saginata-associated Appendicitis
We report the case a Japanese man who had previously resided in Vietnam, who experienced appendicitis and the presence of segments in his stool. Gastrografin led to the expulsion of Taenia saginata, as confirmed by scolex identification. Remarkably, the appendicitis symptoms subsided after deworming. This case underscores the importance of considering cestode infections in the differential diagnosis of appendicitis, particularly for patients with relevant travel histories, and highlights the evolving challenges in global health and the significance of acquiring detailed patient histories.PMID:38599859 | DOI:10.2169/interna...

Impact of Polypharmacy and Risk Factors for Exacerbation of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Patients with Urological Conditions: A Retrospective Study in a Japanese Municipal Hospital
In conclusion, this study revealed that "polypharmacy" and "taking multiple anticholinergic medications" were risk factors for LUTS. Particularly, "polypharmacy" is associated with storage symptom exacerbation. Therefore, eliminating "polypharmacy" and "taking multiple anticholinergic medications" is expected to improve LUTS.PMID:38599882 | DOI:10.1248/bpb.b23-00762 (Source: Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin)

Stage at diagnosis of colorectal cancer through diagnostic route: Who should be screened?
CONCLUSION: CRCs detected during hospital visits for comorbidities were diagnosed earlier, similar to cancer screening.
