The global impact of SARS-CoV-2 variant BA.2.86: a comprehensive analysis with the latest developments and transmission trends - an epidemiological study
CONCLUSIONS: The SARS-CoV-2, novel variant BA.2.86, spread over six continents and 89 countries and affected 19,532 people worldwide. The disease is more prevalent in the United Kingdom, United States of America, and European countries. The detection of the disease in multiple continents and countries suggests some degree of transmissibility. Global health authorities need to rethink their policies and implement strict strategies to eradicate emerging variants and minimize the global disease burden.PMID:38639533 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35928 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Comparative Analysis of Clinical Outcomes: Posterior Cervical Endoscopic Discectomy versus Fenestration Laminectomy Discectomy for Cervical Disc Herniation
CONCLUSION: PCED showed favorable long-term clinical efficacy in the treatment of CDH, with excellent recovery and high safety. Compared to FLD, PCED resulted in reduced intraoperative blood loss, shorter incision length, and faster recovery. It also led to improved pain scores, functional outcomes, and quality of life measures. The absence of postoperative complications further supports the use of PCED as an effective treatment option for CDH.PMID:38639610 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Changes in psychopharmacotherapy for patients with schizophrenia in a psychiatric institution in Japan: A 12-year prescription survey pre- and post-introduction of clozapine
Asian J Psychiatr. 2024 Apr 9;96:104047. doi: 10.1016/j.ajp.2024.104047. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPsychopharmacotherapy for patients with schizophrenia in Japan has a long history of polypharmacy, which is rare worldwide but remains a critical problem. One reason for this is that clozapine was not available in Japan until 2009. We aimed to investigate the changes in psychopharmacotherapy in patients with schizophrenia over 12 years pre- and post-introduction of clozapine to clarify how psychopharmacotherapy for patients with schizophrenia has changed with the introduction of clozapine. We retrospectively collected dat...

Reliability of the DI-60 Digital Image Analyzer for Detecting Platelet Clumping and Obtaining Accurate Platelet Counts
Ann Lab Med. 2024 Apr 19. doi: 10.3343/alm.2024.0003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPseudothrombocytopenia caused by platelet clumping (PC) can lead to unnecessary platelet transfusions or underdiagnosis of hematologic neoplasms. To overcome these limitations, we assessed the capacity of the Sysmex DI-60 digital morphology analyzer (Sysmex, Kobe, Japan) for detecting PC and determining an accurate platelet count in the presence of PC. For this purpose, 135 samples with or without PC (groups Y and N, respectively) were processed by an examiner (a hematologic specialist) using both the Sysmex XN-9000 and DI-60 analyzers. Alt...

Medical database analysis of the association between kidney function and achievement of glycemic control in older Japanese adults with type  2 diabetes who started with oral antidiabetic drugs
ConclusionsIn older Japanese adults with type  2 diabetes, those with a lower estimated glomerular filtration rate were more likely to achieve hemoglobin A1c of<7.0%. To safely manage blood glucose levels in older adults with chronic kidney disease, physicians should remain vigilant about the risk of iatrogenic hypoglycemia. Factors associated with smoking behaviour changes during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan: a 6-month follow-up study
Conclusion During the pandemic, dual cigarette and HTP use increased smoking intensity, whereas HTP-only use was associated with quitting but fear of COVID-19 and not having a home smoking ban made it harder to quit. (Source: Tobacco Control)

Japan Tobacco corporate social responsibility activities misleadingly claim to advance Sustainable Development Goals
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by United Nations Member States in 2015, is a collective plan of action to achieve the agreed 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) via 169 targets. SDG 3 aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for the entire population of all age groups.1 One of the measures to achieve this goal is strengthening the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in all countries (Target 3.a). Implementing the WHO FCTC and other best tobacco control measures is essential to meet Target 3.4: a one-third reduction in premature mortality from non...

Synergistic effect of independent risk factors for post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis: a multicenter retrospective study in Japan
CONCLUSIONS: As the number of risk factors for PEP increases, the risk of PEP may not be additive; however, it may multiply. Thus, aggressive prophylaxis for PEP is strongly recommended in patients with multiple risk factors.PMID:38632965 | DOI:10.5946/ce.2023.203 (Source: Clinical Endoscopy)
