Discovery of a novel small molecule with efficacy in protecting against inflammation in vitro and in vivo by enhancing macrophages activation
In this study, we found that GH01 effectively ameliorated dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis symptoms in mice. Disruption of intestinal barrier function, commensal microbiota and its metabolites were also significantly restored by GH01 in a dose-dependent manner. Of note, we also found that GH01 enhanced phagocytic ability of macrophages and switched macrophage phenotype from M1 to M2 both in vitro and in vivo. Such macrophage polarization was highly associated with intestinal barrier integrity and the gut microbial community. Consequently, GH01 exhibited strong anti-inflammatory capacity by inhibiting TLR4 and N...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5837: Icaritin Promotes Myelination by Simultaneously Enhancing the Proliferation and Differentiation of Oligodendrocyte Precursor Cells
Yonghong Liao Myelin repair, which is known as remyelination, is critical to the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, and myelination depends on not only the differentiation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells toward oligodendrocytes but also the renewal of oligodendrocyte precursor cells under pathological conditions. However, simultaneously promoting the differentiation and proliferation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells in lesions remains an unmet challenge and might affect demyelinating diseases. Kidney-tonifying herbs of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are effective in improving the symptoms of degenerative...

The pharmacological effects and safety of the raw and prepared folium of Epimedium brevicornu Maxim. on improving kidney-yang deficiency syndrome and sexual dysfunction
Conclusion: We demonstrated that PFEB was better than RFEB at tonifying the kidney-Yang by comparing their effects on improving the NEI network, which includes the HPA axis, immune system and corpus cavernosum. This study revealed that PFEB could significantly improve the sexual function of KDS mice by regulating the HPA axis and activating the immune system through the NEI network. A novel small molecule effectively ameliorates estrogen deficiency-induced osteoporosis by targeting the gut-bone signaling axis
Eur J Pharmacol. 2023 Jun 25:175868. doi: 10.1016/j.ejphar.2023.175868. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPostmenopausal osteoporosis stems mainly from estrogen deficiency leading to a gut microbiome-dependent disruption of host systemic immunity. However, the underlying mechanisms of estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss remain elusive and novel pharmaceutical intervention strategies for osteoporosis are needed. Here we reveal that ovariectomy (ovx)-induced estrogen deficiency in C57BL/6 mice causes significant disruption of gut microbiota composition, consequently leading to marked destruction of intestinal barrier function ...

Icariin alleviates ferroptosis-related atherosclerosis by promoting autophagy in xo-LDL-induced vascular endothelial cell injury and atherosclerotic mice
Phytother Res. 2023 Jun 21. doi: 10.1002/ptr.7854. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVascular endothelial cells (VECs) are located between the blood plasma and the vascular tissue, and the ferroptosis (iron-dependent programmed cell death) of VECs can lead to a range of cardiovascular diseases. Icariin is the main active ingredient of Epimedium brevicornum Maxim., which can improve endothelial cell dysfunction. In the present study, the protective effects of icariin on oxidised low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL)-treated VECs and high-fat diet-fed Apolipoprotein E-deficient mice were investigated. Inflammatory fibrosis in tissues...

Epimedium sagittatum Maxim ameliorates adriamycin ‐induced nephropathy by restraining inflammation and apoptosis via the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway
ConclusionThis study suggested that EPI ameliorates adriamycin-induced nephropathy by reducing inflammation and apoptosis through the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, icariin may be the pharmacodynamic substance basis for this effect. (Source: Immunity, Inflammation and Disease)
