Icariin Improves Glucocorticoid Resistance in a Murine Model of Asthma with Depression Associated with Enhancement of GR Expression and Function
In this study, a murine model of asthma with depression was established by exposure to ovalbumin combined with chronic unpredictable mild stress, and icariin was given orally during ovalbumin challenge and chronic unpredictable mild stress exposure. Depression-like behaviors were assessed by the open field test, forced swim test, and tail suspension test. The characteristic features of allergic asthma, including airway hyperreactivity, histopathology, inflammatory cytokine levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and immunoglobulin E and corticosterone levels in serum, were examined. Following splenocyte isol...

Molecular mechanisms regulating the pharmacological actions of icariin with special focus on PI3K-AKT and Nrf-2 signaling pathways
Mol Biol Rep. 2022 Aug 8. doi: 10.1007/s11033-022-07778-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIcariin is a primary active component of the traditional Chinese medicinal plant Epimedium grandiflorum. A range of pharmacological effects of icariin has been researched by modern science to explain its traditional medicinal uses. Attributing to the wide range of pharmacological properties like anti-osteoporosis, anti-inflammation, anti-oxidative stress, anti-depression, and anti-tumor property possessed by icariin, it is now being considered a potential therapeutic agent for a wide variety of disorders ranging from neoplasm, neurodeg...

Icaritin and intratumoral injection of CpG treatment synergistically promote T cell infiltration and antitumor immune response in mice
Int Immunopharmacol. 2022 Aug 2;111:109093. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2022.109093. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe development of combination therapy that can modulate the tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment is highly desirable for cancer immunotherapy. Icaritin (ICT), a hydrolytic product of icariin from genus Epimedium, has been used as an anti-cancer immunoregulatory agent for many types of cancers. Herein, we design a novel therapeutic strategy for mice melanoma that combines systemic administration of icaritin with intratumoral injection of unmethylated cytosine-guanine oligodeoxynucleotide (CpG). Icaritin induces ...

Identification of naturally occurring inhibitors in Xian-Ling-Gu-Bao capsule against the glucuronidation of estrogens
Xian-Ling-Gu-Bao (XLGB) capsule, a well-known traditional Chinese medicine prescription, is widely used for the treatment of osteoporosis. It could significantly increase the levels of estrogen in ovariectomized rats and mice. However, this working mechanism has not been well elucidated. Considering that UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) enzymes are the important enzymes that inactivate and regulate estrogen activity in vivo, this study aimed to identify the bioactive compounds from XLGB against the glucuronidation of estrogens. First, thirty compounds were considered as candidate bioactive compounds based on our previous ...

Epimedium koreanum Nakai –Induced Liver Injury—A Mechanistic Study Using Untargeted Metabolomics
In this study, untargeted metabolomics was performed to analyze the serum and liver tissue to explore the mechanism of hepatotoxicity of Epimedium koreanum Nakai. The results of experiments in vivo showed that, after 28 days of exposure to Epimedium koreanum Nakai ethanol extract (EEE), the liver weight, levels of AST, ALP, TBIL, etc. in serum of rats in the EEE group were significantly increased, as well as severe cytoplasmic vacuolation appeared in the liver tissue, which suggested that EEE has significant hepatotoxicity. Subsequently, the results of metabolomics revealed significant changes in the metabolic profile in ...
