The mechanism of Epimedium in the treatment of coronary atherosclerotic heart disease based on network pharmacology, molecular docking, and in vitro studies
CONCLUSIONS: (1) Icariin, quercetin and luteolin may act on target proteins, including IL-6, ESR1, EGFR, MAPK8, VEGFA and CASP8, to participate in the regulation of the human cytomegalovirus infection pathway, the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, the TNF signaling pathway and other signaling pathways in order to effectively treat CAD. (2) In vitro studies confirmed that Epimedium extract can treat CAD by upregulating PI3K, Akt and P-Akt protein expression and downregulating IL-6 protein expression in SD rat cardiomyocytes.PMID:35442463 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202204_28482 (Source: European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences)

Icaritin Inhibits Migration and Invasion of Human Ovarian Cancer Cells via the Akt/mTOR Signaling Pathway
Ovarian cancer (OC) is the most lethal of all gynecologic malignancies with poor survival rates. Although surgical treatment and chemotherapy had advanced to improve survival, platinum-based chemoresistance remains a major hurdle in the clinical treatment of OC. The search for novel active ingredients for the treatment of drug-resistant OC is urgently needed. Here, we demonstrated that icaritin, the main active ingredient derived from the traditional Chinese herb Epimedium genus, significantly suppressed the proliferation, migration, and invasion of both drug-susceptible and cisplatin-resistant OC cells in vitro. Mechanist...

Epimedium for Osteoporosis Based on Western and Eastern Medicine: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Epimedium may improve BMD and effective rate and relieve pain as an adjuvant or alternative; Epimedium as an alternative might regulate bone metabolism, especially ALP, with satisfying clinical efficacy during osteoporosis. More rigorous RCTs are warranted to confirm these results. (Source: Frontiers in Pharmacology)

Icaritin Preparation from Icariin by a Special Epimedium Flavonoid-Glycosidase from Aspergillus sp.y848 Strain
J Microbiol Biotechnol. 2022 Feb 11;32(4):1-8. doi: 10.4014/jmb.2112.12036. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo obtain the icaritin with high pharmacological activities from icariin, which content ratio over 58% in the total flavonoids of Epimedium Herb, a special Epimedium flavonoid-glycosidase was produced, purified and characterized from Aspergillus sp.y848 strain. The optimal enzyme production was gained in the medium containing 5% (w/v) wheat bran extract and 0.7% (w/v) Epimedium leaf powder as the enzyme inducer, and strain culture at 30°C for 6-7 days. The molecular weight of the enzyme was approximately 73.2 kDa; the...
