Icariin Inhibits Overexpression and Aggregation of α-Synuclein in A53T α-Synuclein Transgenic Mice by Regulating Parkin and PLK2
CONCLUSIONS: ICA alleviated motor impairments in A53T mice, an effect which may be associated with the decreased phosphorylation and aggregation of α-synuclein through PLK2 and parkin regulation.PMID:38176950 | DOI:10.31083/j.jin2206166 (Source: Journal of Integrative Neuroscience)

Icariin ameliorates the cuprizone-induced demyelination associated with antioxidation and anti-inflammation
AbstractThe treatment of immunomodulation in multiple sclerosis (MS) can alleviate the severity and relapses. However, it cannot improve the neurological disability of patients due to a lack of myelin protection and regeneration. Therefore, remyelinating therapies may be one of the feasible strategies that can prevent axonal degeneration and restore neurological disability. Natural product icariin (ICA) is a flavonol compound extracted from epimedium flavonoids, which has neuroprotective effects in several models of neurological diseases. Here, we attempt to explore whether ICA has the potential to treat demyelination and ...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 207: Optimization of the Flavonoid Extraction Process from the Stem and Leaves of Epimedium Brevicornum and Its Effects on Cyclophosphamide-Induced Renal Injury
Conclusion: After the optimal extraction of total flavonoids from the stems and leaves of Epimedium, the molecular docking technique combined with animal experiments suggested that the effective component of the total flavonoids of Epimedium might activate the Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway after treatment to reduce the inflammation and oxidative stress of kidney tissue, so as to reduce kidney damage and improve kidney function. Therefore, EBF may become a new natural protective agent for CTX chemotherapy in the future. (Source: Molecules)

Icariin rescues developmental BPA exposure induced spatial memory deficits in rats
This study investigated the therapeutic effect of Icariin (10 mg/kg/day, from postnatal day (PND) 21 to PND 60 by gavage) on spatial memory deficits in rat induced by developmental BPA exposure (1 mg/kg/day, from embryonic to PND 60), demonstrating that Icariin can markedly improve spatial memory in BPA-exposed rat. Furthermore, intra-gastric administration of Icariin could attenuate abnormal hippocampal cell dispersion and loss, improved the dendritic spine density and Nissl bodies. Moreover, Icariin reversed BPA induced reduction of frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents(mEPSC) and decrease of Vesicular ...

Prenylated chromones and flavonoids isolated from the roots of Flemingia macrophylla and their anti-lung cancer activity
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that Flemingia macrophylla is rich in prenylated flavonoid constituents, among which compounds 5 and 7 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against A549 cells and served as reference candidates for the design and development of prenylated compounds as antitumor therapeutic drugs.PMID:37996917 | DOI:10.1186/s13020-023-00860-3 (Source: Cancer Control)

Structural identification of an polysaccharide isolated from Epimedium brevicornum and its beneficial effect on promoting osteogenesis in osteoblasts induced by high glucose
CONCLUSION: These results indicate that EBPC1 treatment can promote osteogenesis during DOP, which can ameliorate apoptosis by regulating Bax/Bcl2 and accelerating osteogenesis in osteoblasts.PMID:37979377 | DOI:10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115893 (Source: Biomedicine and pharmacotherapy = Biomedecine and pharmacotherapie)

One new prenylated flavonoid with cytotoxic activity from < em > Epimedium brevicornu < /em > maxim
Nat Prod Res. 2023 Nov 15:1-4. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2023.2282114. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOne previously undescribed prenylated flavonoid (1) and three known ones (2-4) were isolated from leaves of Epimedium brevicornu maxim. Their structures were determined through extensive spectroscopic analysis and comparison with the NMR data in the literature. Compound 1 showed a moderate cytotoxicity with an IC50 value of 18.7 μM, while known compounds 2 and 3 elicited weak cytotoxicities with IC50 values of 29.2 and 32.8 μM against Lewis Lung cancer cells (LLC cells), respectively.PMID:37966979 | DOI:10.1080/14786419.2023....

Icariin induces developmental toxicity via thyroid hormone disruption in zebrafish larvae
Food Chem Toxicol. 2023 Oct 26:114155. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2023.114155. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIcariin (ICA) is a natural flavonoid isolated from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Epimedium brevicornu Maxim. Although previous studies have reported that ICA exhibits various pharmacological activities, little is known about its toxicology. Herein, zebrafish embryos were exposed to ICA at 0, 2.5, 10, and 40 μM. In developmental analysis, reduced hatching rates, decreased body length, and abnormal swim bladder were found after treatment with 10 and 40 μM ICA. In addition, the ability of locomotor behavior was imp...
