A Traditional Chinese Medicine Plant Extract Prevents Alcohol-Induced Osteopenia
In this study, Balb/c male mice were orally administrated alcohol (3.2 g/kg/day) with/without TCM herbal extracts (0.125 g/kg, 0.25 g/kg, or 0.5 g/kg) by gavage. Our results showed that after 50 days of oral administration, TCM herbal extracts prevented alcohol-induced osteopenia demonstrated by μ-CT bone morphological analysis in young adults and middle-aged/old Balb/c male mice. Biochemical analysis demonstrated that chronic alcohol consumption inhibits bone formation and has a neutral impact on bone resorption, suggesting that TCM herbal extracts (Jing extracts) mitigate the alcohol-induced abnormal bone metabolis...

Research progress on icariin, a traditional Chinese medicine extract, in the treatment of asthma
Allergol Immunopathol (Madr). 2022 Jan 1;50(1):9-16. doi: 10.15586/aei.v50i1.490. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTBronchial asthma is a common chronic airway disease, and long-term management of asthma is the focus and challenge of clinical treatment. Glucocorticoids are often used as the first choice for the treatment of asthma. However, the occurrence of hormone dependence, hormone resistance, and local and systemic adverse reactions caused by hormone application also creates problems for the treatment of asthma. Finding new, safe, and effective therapeutic drugs is an important research direction at present. Icariin is an effe...

Three New Hydroxyphenylacetic Acid Derivatives and A New Alkaloid from Endophytic Fungus Mortierella sp. in Epimedium acuminatum Franch. and Their Antibacterial Activity
Chem Biodivers. 2021 Nov 16:e2100741. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202100741. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThree new hydroxyphenylacetic acid derivatives, stachylines E-G (1-3), and a new alkaloid, mortieridinone (4), along with six known compounds (5-10), were isolated from endophytic fungus Mortierella sp. in Epimedium acuminatum Franch. Their structures were determined by their spectroscopic analyses and by comparison with the literature data. Compounds 7 and 10 showed selective antibacterial activity against tested multidrug-resistant bacteria with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 25 to 3.13 μg/mL.PMID...

Icariin inhibits the expression of IL-1 β, IL-6 and TNF-α induced by OGD/R through the IRE1/XBP1s pathway in microglia
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggested that ICA might decrease the expression of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α by inhibiting IRE1/XBP1s pathway. The anti-inflammatory effect of ICA may provide a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of brain injury after stroke.PMID:34711127 | DOI:10.1080/13880209.2021.1991959 (Source: Pharmaceutical Biology)

Icariin arrests cell cycle progression and induces cell apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway in human fibroblast-like synoviocytes
In conclusion, icariin inhibited the proliferation of FLSs by interfering with the cell cycle process and inducing cell apoptosis, suggesting its potential use for the treatment of RA.PMID:34678240 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejphar.2021.174585 (Source: European Journal of Pharmacology)

Antagonizing astrocytic platelet activating factor receptor-neuroinflammation for total flavone of epimedium in response to cuprizone demyelination
Int Immunopharmacol. 2021 Oct 1;101(Pt A):108181. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2021.108181. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDemyelinating diseases of the central nervous system are characterized by recurrent demyelination and progressive neurodegeneration, but there are no clinical drugs targeting myelin regeneration or improving functional disability in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Total flavone of Epimedium (TFE) is the main active components of Epimedium, which exhibits the beneficial biological activities in the treatment of diseases, but there is no report in the treatment of demyelinating disorder. The purpose of this...
