Assessment of vitamin D status in common variable immunodeficiency or ataxia-telangiectasia patients.
CONCLUSION: Vitamin D deficiency occurred in a quarter of the patients although there was no difference between the patient and the control group; without association with bone and inflammation biomarkers. Serum soluble Fas ligand levels and peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets in patients with drug-induced maculopapular rashes, dress, and viral exanthemas.
CONCLUSION: Serum sFasL levels were not found to be useful in discriminating viral exanthemas from other drug rashes. The significant differences between MPDE, VE, and DRESS were high CD4+ and CD19+ cell-count numbers in VE but low B-cell numbers in DRESS. This might be important for discriminating VE from DRESS, and the low B-cell count in early symptoms might be a useful predictor of DRESS development. Are the most common food allergens in an Iranian atopic population compatible with worldwide reports? A systemic review and meta-analysis with molecular classification of frequent allergens.
CONCLUSIONS: Considering the prevalence of different food allergens, the results of the current meta-analysis revealed that egg yolk and cow's milk had the second and third rate after shrimp, respectively. The high prevalence of sensitization to shrimp may be attributed to its high consumption in coastal areas and/or cross-reactivity of shrimp with some aeroallergens such as mites. Estrogen and estrogen receptor signaling promotes allergic immune responses: Effects on immune cells, cytokines, and inflammatory factors involved in allergy.
Abstract Hypersensitivity occurs when the body is stimulated by an antigen, resulting in an immune response, and leads to a physiological disorder or abnormal tissue trauma. Various immune cells, cytokines, and inflammatory mediators are involved in the immune responses related to allergic diseases, which are the core of anaphylaxis. Estrogen receptors are widely distributed in immune cells, which combine with estrogen and participate in allergic responses by affecting immune cells, cytokines, and inflammatory factors. We aimed to summarize the association between estrogen and allergic reactions to provide a scien...

ez JA Abstract INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: With the objective of making informed decisions on resource allocation, there is a critical need for studies that provide accurate information on hospital costs for treating respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-related bronchiolitis, mainly in middle-income countries (MICs). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the direct medical costs associated with bronchiolitis hospitalizations caused by infection with RSV in Bogota, Colombia. In this study, we enumerated and compared T lymphocytes and Tregs in esophageal tissue of patients with EoE, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and normal controls. METHODS: Ten patients with EoE, ten patients with GERD and eight normal controls were included. Immunohistochemistry staining was used to enumerate T lymphocytes and Tregs. CD3+ cells were considered as T cells and FOXP3+, CD3+ cells were considered as Tregs. T cells and Tregs were counted in 10 high power fields (HPF) (×400) for each patient and the average of 10 HPFs was recorded. RESULTS: The mean±SEM of Tregs in esophageal tissue ...

B subset cells in patients with chronic granulomatous disease in a Mexican population.
This study was performed in a Latin American cohort. RESULTS: We found significantly higher levels of naive B cells and B1a cells, but lower levels of memory B cells were found in CGD patients compared to HC. There was no significant difference of cell percentages per inheritance type. DISCUSSION: Our findings suggest that the deficiency of NADPH oxidase components can affect the differentiation of naive B cells to memory B cells. Consequently, memory cells will be low, which also influenced the expression of CD27 in memory B cells and as a result, the percentage of naive cells increases. An altered phenotype of ...

Why despite the lower prevalence, is asthma more severe in the semiarid region?
CONCLUSIONS: Temperature and humidity may have contributed to a lower prevalence and greater severity of asthma in the semiarid region. The dispensing of medications was lower in the semiarid region, indicating that access to both relief and control drugs was lower in this city. The possibility of lack of health care in the semiarid region can also be another explanatory factor associated. Due to their increasing frequency, Adverse Reactions to Food (AFR) have been the subject of extensive study, especially in North America and Europe but few studies have been conducted in other areas, especially in populations located in the tropics and subtropics. In this article, we review available information on the epidemiology of food sensitization and food allergies in tropical regions and explore the different epi...

Correlation of OX40 ligand on B cells with serum total IgE and IL-4 levels by CD4+ T cells in allergic rhinitis.
Abstract INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a classic Th2-mediated disease, with important contributions to the pathology of interleukins 4, 5, and 13. The co-stimulatory molecule of OX40 and its ligand interaction participate in the immune response by regulation of Th1/Th2 cells balance. Considering the paucity of information on the relation between OX40 ligand (OX40L) and AR, this study aimed to examine its expression on B lymphocytes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This case-control study consisted of 20 AR patients and 20 healthy subjects. The serum level of total immunoglobulin E (IgE) was mea...

Day-care center attendance and risk of Asthma-A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Children attending day-care center during the first years of life have a higher risk of recurrent wheezing during the first three years and asthma before the age of six, but not later. This risk must be taken into account to inform parents in order to choose what kind of care children should have throughout infancy and to implement preventive measures to reduce its impact. Cooking influence in tolerance acquisition in egg-induced acute food protein enterocolitis syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: It is possible to perform an OFC with baked egg, to verify the possible acquisition of tolerance, at about 30 months of life in children with acute egg FPIES. PMID: 30316559 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Allergologia et Immunopathologia)

Focus group parental opinions regarding treatment with topical corticosteroids on children with atopic dermatitis.
CONCLUSIONS: This study gives a complete overview of factors influencing adherence. Treatment with topical corticosteroids can be improved by better informing parents about the working mechanisms, the use, and how to reduce the dose. Healthcare professionals need to be aware of the consequences of their negative attitude concerning topical corticosteroids. Microdeletion 22q11.2 syndrome: Does thymus incidental surgical resection affect its immunological profile?
CONCLUSION: Patients with del22q11.2 syndrome subjected to thymus resection present lower lymphocyte and TREC indexes when compared to patients without thymectomy. This situation may be influenced by the age at the surgery and the time elapsed since the procedure. PMID: 30292446 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Allergologia et Immunopathologia)

Osteoprotegerin mediate RANK/RANKL signaling inhibition eases asthma inflammatory reaction by affecting the survival and function of dendritic cells.
CONCLUSIONS: This research proved inhibition of RANK/RANKL signaling by OPG could ease the inflammatory reaction in asthma, providing new evidence for the application of OPG on asthma. PMID: 30292447 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Allergologia et Immunopathologia)

Phenotyping and long-term follow up of patients with hyper IgE syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: AD-HIES and AR-HIES cannot be differentiated only based on the clinical presentations. Genetic features are also necessary for better diagnosis. This study, summarizing the clinical, immunological and genetic information of the patients with AD-HIES and AR-HIES, may open a way for better diagnosis and management of HIES.
