Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33295-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRaising soil contamination with cadmium (Cd2+) and salinization necessitates the development of green approaches using bio-elicitors to ensure sustainable crop production and mitigate the detrimental health impacts. Two field trials were carried out to study the individual and combined effects of foliage spraying of Moringa leaf extract (MLE) and soil application of effective microorganisms (EMs) on the physio-biochemical, osmolytes, antioxidants, and performance of sweet potato grown in Cd2+-contaminated salty soil (Cd2...

Temperature influence on the sensitivity of Artemia franciscana to globally used pesticides - Oxyfluorfen and copper
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 21;357:142092. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.142092. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTClimate change further the world's human population increase is a mainstream political issue, and it's critical to search for solutions to produce enough food to feed everyone. Pesticides and fertilizers have been used as an easy solution to prevent pests and increase food production. Nevertheless, their overuse has dangerous effects on the ecosystems and communities. Oxyfluorfen (Oxy) and copper (Cu) based formulations are used as pesticides and widely applied on agricultural fields for crop protection. However, they...

However, its association with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), a crucial indicator of blood-sugar control, may vary across different populations and disease statuses. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017–2018 were analyzed. Partic...

Detection of Sulfoquinovosidase Activity in Cell Lysates Using Activity-Based Probes
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Apr 22:e202401358. doi: 10.1002/anie.202401358. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe sulfolipid sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerol (SQDG), produced by plants, algae, and cyanobacteria, constitutes a major sulfur reserve in the biosphere. Microbial breakdown of SQDG is critical for the biological utilization of its sulfur. This commences through release of the parent sugar, sulfoquinovose (SQ), catalyzed by sulfoquinovosidases (SQases). These vanguard enzymes are encoded in gene clusters that code for diverse SQ catabolic pathways. To identify, visualize and isolate glycoside hydrolase CAZY-family 31 (...

Liver glycogen fragility in the presence of hydrogen-bond breakers
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 20;268(Pt 1):131741. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131741. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlycogen, a complex branched glucose polymer, is responsible for sugar storage in blood glucose homeostasis. It comprises small β particles bound together into composite α particles. In diabetic livers, α particles are fragile, breaking apart into smaller particles in dimethyl sulfoxide, DMSO; they are however stable in glycogen from healthy animals. We postulate that the bond between β particles in α particles involves hydrogen bonding. Liver-glycogen fragility in normal and db/db mice (an animal mode...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1904: Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Kir6.2 Variants Reveals Potential Association with Diabetes Mellitus
In this study, we examined the effect of mutations on the Kir6.2 structure using bioinformatics tools and molecular dynamic simulations (SIFT, PolyPhen, SNAP2, PANTHER, PhD&SNP, SNP&Go, I-Mutant, MuPro, MutPred, ConSurf, HOPE, and GROMACS). Our results indicated that M199R, R201H, R206H, and Y330H mutations influence Kir6.2 structure and function and therefore may cause DM. We conclude that MD simulations are useful techniques to predict the effects of mutations on protein structure. In addition, the M199R, R201H, R206H, and Y330H variant in the Kir6.2 protein may be associated with DM. These result...

Atractylodin ameliorates lipopolysaccharide-induced depressive-like behaviors in mice through reducing neuroinflammation and neuronal damage
In this study, the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced mouse model was used to explore the antidepressant effects and molecular mechanisms of atractylodin. The results showed that atractylodin increased sugar preference, also reduced immobility time in FST and TST. (Source: Journal of Neuroimmunology)

Effect of nanoformulation Azadirachta indica on some factors associated with the vectorial capacity and competence of Anopheles aquasalis experimentally infected with Plasmodium vivax
In conclusion, these findings suggest that the A. indica nanoformulation is a potential as a tool for malaria control through reduction in the vector longevity and reproductive capacity, possibly leading to decreased vector population densities. Moreover, the nanoformulation interfered with the sporogonic development of P. vivax. However, further basic research on Neem formulations, their effects, and mechanisms of action is imperative to gain a more specific perspective for safe field implementation.PMID:38642694 | DOI:10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107223 (Source: Acta Tropica)

Evaluation of prediabetes patients in terms of metabolic syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: Hypertension, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity, and metabolic obesity increased in the coexistence of prediabetes and MetS. At the same time, the coexistence of prediabetes and MetS was associated with higher systolic blood pressure, postprandial blood sugar, and LDL levels. Prediabetic individuals accompanied by MetS are at greater metabolic risk.PMID:38639515 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35904 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Activation of glycosyl methylpropiolates by TfOH
Carbohydr Res. 2024 Apr 9;539:109106. doi: 10.1016/j.carres.2024.109106. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTActivation of glycosyl methylpropiolates by TfOH was investigated. Armed and superarmed glycosyl donors can be activated by use of 0.2 equivalent TfOH whereas 1.0 equivalent of TfOH was required for the activation of the disarmed glycosyl donors. All the glycosidations gave very good yields. The method is suitable for synthesis of glycosides and disaccharides and it may result in the hydrolysis of the interglycosidic bond if the sugar at the non-reducing end is armed or superarmed. These problems are not seen when gold-ca...
