Tomotherapy in synchronous and metachronous bilateral breast cancer: Clinical experience
CONCLUSION: Our results show the efficacy of using helical Tomotherapy considering positive outcomes, being that three out of four patients are in remission with low acute toxicity and late complications. There are a small number of articles describing bilateral breast cancer treatment with helical Tomotherapy. On this occasion, our data could contribute to the studies of tolerant doses for organs at risk and improve the parameters of treatment plans for bilateral breast cancer. Since the small sample of patients with bilateral breast cancer limits the study, a larger cohort of patients is essential to obtain statistically...

TLR7-dependent eosinophil degranulation links psoriatic skin inflammation to small intestinal inflammatory changes in mice
Exp Mol Med. 2024 May 1. doi: 10.1038/s12276-024-01225-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent evidence of gut microbiota dysbiosis in the context of psoriasis and the increased cooccurrence of inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis suggest a close relationship between skin and gut immune responses. Using a mouse model of psoriasis induced by the Toll-like receptor (TLR) 7 ligand imiquimod, we found that psoriatic dermatitis was accompanied by inflammatory changes in the small intestine associated with eosinophil degranulation, which impaired intestinal barrier integrity. Inflammatory responses in the skin and small inte...

Cutaneous glands of the striped toad, Rhinella crucifer (Wied-Neuwied, 1821) (Amphibia: Bufonidae): Histological study and bioactivities of glandular secretions
This study investigated the morphology of Rhinella crucifer cutaneous glands, as well as the protein/peptide profiles and bioactivities of body gland secretions (BGS) and parotoid macrogland secretions (PS). The parotoid as well as dorsal and ventral skin fragments of male and female individuals were processed for histological analysis. The protein and peptide profiles of male and female gland secretions were evaluated. Male secretions were also assessed for proteolytic, trypsin inhibiting, hemagglutinating, hemolytic, antimicrobial, and anticoagulant activities. The R. crucifer skin structure presented protuberances that ...

Evaluation of Melatonin and its Nanostructures Effects on Skin Disorders Focused on Wound Healing
Mini Rev Med Chem. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.2174/0113895575299255240422055203. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSkin is the largest organ of the human body functioning as a great primitive defensive barrier against different harmful environmental factors. However, it is damaged through varying injuries such as different wounds, burns, and skin cancers that cause disruption in internal organs and essential mechanisms of the body through inflammation, oxidation, coagulation problems, infection, etc. Melatonin is the major hormone of the pineal gland that is also effective in skin disorders due to strong antioxidant and anti-inflamm...

Collagen sponge scaffolds loaded with Trichostatin A pretreated BMSCs-derived exosomes regulate macrophage polarization to promote skin wound healing
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 28:131948. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131948. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe process of wound healing includes the inflammatory stage, which plays an important role. Macrophages can promote inflammatory response and also promote angiogenesis, wound contraction and tissue remodeling required for wound healing. It is crucial to promote macrophages to polarize from M1 pro-inflammatory phenotype to M2 anti-inflammatory phenotype at a critical time for the quality of wound healing. Because mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes have broad therapeutic prospects in the field of tissue repair and...

Preparation of nano-silver containing black phosphorus based on quaternized chitosan hydrogel and evaluating its effect on skin wound healing
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 27:131950. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131950. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHydrogels with favorable biocompatibility and antibacterial properties are essential in postoperative wound hemorrhage care, facilitating rapid wound healing. The present investigation employed electrostatic adsorption of black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNPs) and nano‑silver (AgNPs) to cross-link the protonated amino group NH3+ of quaternized chitosan (QCS) with the hydroxyl group of hyaluronic acid (HA). The electrostatic interaction between the two groups resulted in the formation of a three-dimensional gel network...

The molecular arrangement of ceramides in the unit cell of the long periodicity phase of stratum corneum models shows a high adaptability to different ceramide head group structures
In this study, the impact of the CER head group structure on the lipid arrangement and barrier functionality was investigated using lipid models forming the LPP. The results demonstrate that the positions of CER N-(tetracosanoyl)-sphingosine (CER NS) and CER N-(tetracosanoyl)-phytosphingosine (CER NP), two essentials CER subclasses, are not influenced by the addition of another CER subclass (N-(tetracosanoyl)-dihydrosphingosine (CER NdS), N-(2R-hydroxy-tetracosanoyl)-sphingosine (CER AS) or D-(2R-hydroxy-tetracosanoyl)-phytosphingosine (CER AP)). However, differences are observed in the lipid organization and the hydrogen ...

Environ Res. 2024 Apr 27:119023. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.119023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAndrographis echioides has been extensively utilized in traditional Indian folk medicines for several skin disorders and other biological actions such as diuretic, antimicrobial, anthelmintic, anti-ulcer, and hepatoprotective properties. Different crude extracts were extracted from A. echioides leaves using various solvents such as methanol and water. The prepared crude extracts were utilized to formulate different herbal ointments. Further, the prepared ointments were examined against wounds and bacterial pathogens. The wound...

Perineal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising in an Epidermal Cyst
Acta Med Okayama. 2024 Apr;78(2):197-200. doi: 10.18926/AMO/66930.ABSTRACTA 90-year-old Japanese woman who had been aware of a subcutaneous mass on the right perineal region for 5 years was referred to our hospital for further examination and treatment because of the rapid growth of the mass and bleeding that began 3 months earlier. A biopsy of the mass revealed a diagnosis of well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. On preoperative examination, the tumor was 90×40 mm in size and was suspected to have partially invaded the levator ani muscle and external sphincter. Since a preoperative cardiac evaluation indicated sev...

Urban indoor gardening enhances immune regulation and diversifies skin microbiota - A placebo-controlled double-blinded intervention study
Environ Int. 2024 Apr 26;187:108705. doi: 10.1016/j.envint.2024.108705. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccording to the hygiene and biodiversity hypotheses, frequent exposure to environmental microbiota, especially through soil contact, diversifies commensal microbiota, enhances immune modulation, and ultimately lowers the risk of immune-mediated diseases. Here we test the underlying assumption of the hygiene and biodiversity hypotheses by instructing volunteers to grow edible plants indoors during the winter season when natural exposure to environmental microbiota is low. The one-month randomized, placebo-controlled double...

Age group-specific changes in keratinocyte cancer treatment rates in Australia, 2012- 2021: a retrospective cohort study based on MBS claims data
CONCLUSIONS: Rates of MBS-subsidised treatment for keratinocyte cancers increased during 2012-2019, but BCC/SCC treatment rates declined among younger Australians, who have probably been exposed to less sunlight than earlier generations because of public health interventions and population-wide lifestyle changes related to technology use.PMID:38685827 | DOI:10.5694/mja2.52293 (Source: Med J Aust)
