Clinical course and disease burden of patients with generalized pustular psoriasis in Portugal: a multicenter retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that GPP is a chronic, debilitating condition associated with systemic involvement, frequent flares, and hospitalizations, despite receiving multiple systemic treatments. Improved disease awareness and new treatments are needed to improve patient care and decrease the burden of the disease.PMID:38684228 | DOI:10.1080/09546634.2024.2345728 (Source: Journal of Dermatological Treatment)

Lactic Acid Chemical Peeling in Skin Disorders
Clin Cosmet Investig Dermatol. 2024 Apr 23;17:901-909. doi: 10.2147/CCID.S455700. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTLactic acid is the most widely occurring natural organic acid in nature. It not only exhibits mild and safe properties but also possesses multiple physiological activities, such as antibacterial effects, immune regulation, and promotion of wound healing, making it one of the most popular chemical peeling agents. Chemical peels are commonly used in the field of aesthetic dermatology as a non-invasive therapeutic approach. This research aims to provide valuable references for clinical dermatologists by summarizing the c...

Novel investigational drugs for alopecia areata and future perspectives
Expert Opin Investig Drugs. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.1080/13543784.2024.2348062. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Alopecia areata (AA) is an immune-mediated disease that causes non-scarring hair loss. While acute, solitary patches often spontaneously remit, developing secondary patches or failure of the disease to resolve within 6-12 months predicts a poor prognosis, with an increased risk of alopecia totalis or universalis. Chronic AA increases the risk of depression and suicidality and reduces quality of life. Treatment options for chronic or acute diffuse AA were previously limited to corticosteroids and traditio...

Silymarin inhibits dermal gelatinolytic activity and reduces cutaneous inflammation
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Apr 29:1-12. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2347452. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMilk thistle (Silybum marianum) is well-known for its antioxidant activity due to the presence of silymarin. Albeit some studies show a potential for skin inflammation, its activity against dermal MMP-9 and MMP-2 remains to be studied. Silymarin isolated from an S. marianum herbal extract was tested for gelatinase inhibition in the presence of isolated MMP-9 and in dermal adenocarcinome HaCaT cells. Silymarin was then further tested in vivo, using a cutaneous inflammation mice model mediated by reactive oxygen species. Silymar...

Safety Profile of Upadacitinib up to 5 Years in Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and Non-radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis: An Integrated Analysis of Clinical Trials
CONCLUSION: Higher rates of serious infection, HZ, lymphopenia, and NMSC were observed with upadacitinib versus adalimumab in PsA; slightly elevated rates for most of these TEAEs were seen with upadacitinib in PsA versus axSpA. Upadacitinib 15 mg demonstrated a generally consistent safety profile across disease states with no new safety signals identified.TRIAL REGISTRATION: SELECT-AXIS 1: NCT03178487; SELECT-AXIS 2: NCT04169373; SELECT-PsA 1: NCT03104400; SELECT-PsA 2: NCT03104374.PMID:38683479 | DOI:10.1007/s40744-024-00671-4 (Source: Herpes)

A systematic review and meta-analysis of herpes zoster occurrence/recurrence after COVID-19 infection and vaccination
J Med Virol. 2024 May;96(5):e29629. doi: 10.1002/jmv.29629.ABSTRACTTo inform surveillance, prevention, and management strategies for the varicella zoster virus (VZV) during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study aimed to evaluate the risk of herpes zoster (HZ) occurrence/recurrence following COVID-19 infection and vaccination. A comprehensive search across seven databases was conducted up to January 31, 2024, to identify studies relevant to the occurrence of HZ following COVID-19 infection and vaccination. The meta-analysis included five studies on postinfection HZ and 13 studies on postvaccination HZ. Patients infected with CO...

Human herpesvirus type 6 in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus
CONCLUSION: Although patients with SLE had a higher prevalence of HHV-6 compared with healthy people, there is no strong link between HHV-6 infection and SLE. Future research is necessary because this data does not support the hypothesis that human herpesvirus 6 plays a role in the pathogenesis of SLE.PMID:38682068 | PMC:PMC11055447 | DOI:10.18502/ijm.v16i1.14883 (Source: Iranian Journal of Microbiology)
