Comparison of Intralesional Sodium Stibogluconate versus Intralesional Meglumine Antimoniate for the Treatment of Leishmania major Cutaneous Leishmaniasis
In conclusion, the 2 different medications have the same efficacy and safety for treating cutaneous leishmaniasis. Pentavalent antimoniate intralesional infiltration treatment is safe, effective, and well tolerated with minimal side effects for Old-World cutaneous leishmaniasis.PMID:38682801 | DOI:10.2340/actadv.v104.35089 (Source: Acta Derm Venereol A...)

A piezoelectric-driven microneedle platform for skin disease therapy
Innovation (Camb). 2024 Apr 5;5(3):100621. doi: 10.1016/j.xinn.2024.100621. eCollection 2024 May 6.ABSTRACTWith over a million cases detected each year, skin disease is a global public health problem that diminishes the quality of life due to its difficulty to eradicate, propensity for recurrence, and potential for post-treatment scarring. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment with minimal invasiveness or scarring and few side effects, making it well tolerated by patients. However, this treatment requires further research and development to improve its effective clinical use. Here, a piezoelectric-driven microneedle (P...

Role of Insulin Use and Social Determinants of Health on Non-melanoma Skin Cancer: Results From the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that socioeconomic differences related to the healthcare system and behavioral patterns are linked to discrepancies in the use of insulin and the development of NMSC.PMID:38680117 | DOI:10.1177/10732748241249896 (Source: Cancer Control)

A reinterpretation of human breast anatomy includes all the layers of the anterior body wall
Anat Rec (Hoboken). 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.1002/ar.25456. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMammary glands define mammals as a group, yet a comprehensive anatomical description of the mammary gland does not exist for almost any mammalian species. In humans, the anatomical and surgical literature provide conflicting and incomplete descriptions of the gross anatomy of the breast. We dissected 9 male and 15 female human body donors to clarify this gross anatomy. We found that, like other epidermally derived glands of the body, the mammary glandular tissue is constrained to a membrane-bound, central structure referred to as the corp...

A new mechanism in negative pressure wound therapy: interleukin-17 alters chromatin accessibility profiling
In this study, skin wound-healing models were established, with administration of NPWT. Vimentin, collagen I, and MMP9 of skin tissues were detected by immunofluorescence (IF). Gene expression analysis of skin wound tissues was performed by RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq). Protein expression was assayed by a western blotting or IF assay, and mRNA levels were quantified by quantitative PCR. Chromatin accessibility profiles of fibroblasts following NPWT or IL-17 exposure were analyzed by ATAC-seq. In rat wound-healing models, NPWT promoted wound repair by promoting re-epithelialization, extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis and prol...

Safety Profile of Upadacitinib up to 5 Years in Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and Non-radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis: An Integrated Analysis of Clinical Trials
ConclusionHigher rates of serious infection, HZ, lymphopenia, and NMSC were observed with upadacitinib versus adalimumab in PsA; slightly elevated rates for most of these TEAEs were seen with upadacitinib in PsA versus axSpA. Upadacitinib 15  mg demonstrated a generally consistent safety profile across disease states with no new safety signals identified.Trial RegistrationSELECT-AXIS 1: NCT03178487; SELECT-AXIS 2: NCT04169373; SELECT-PsA 1: NCT03104400; SELECT-PsA 2: NCT03104374. Bruton ’s Tyrosine Kinase Inhibition in Pemphigus: An Embattled Frontier
In their recent article in the Journal, Murrell et  al., 2024 report the results of the pivotal clinical trial of rilzabrutinib, a Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor, for the treatment of moderate-to-severe pemphigus. The study did not meet its primary endpoint. In this paper, we briefly examine the biologic rationale and clinical applicati on of BTK inhibitors to pemphigus specifically and B-cell–mediated autoimmune diseases more broadly to inform future studies in the field. The Ethics of Full Body Skin Exams (FBSE)
Full body skin examinations (FBSEs) are part of the purview of a dermatologic exam. Because this involves examination of sensitive or “intimate” areas, there are many ethical issues involved. Herein we discuss whether screening patients with a FBSE is ethical and consistent with the ethical tenet of distributive justice, how to ethically deal with our disabled patients, how to ethically navigate patients who have been emotiona lly or physically traumatized in the past, and the ethical ramifications of the use of a chaperone. Progress towards elimination of onchocerciasis in the < i > Region du Sud-Ouest < /i > of Burkina Faso which was previously subject to a recrudescence event after vector control
Conclusions/significanceThe endemicity of onchocerciasis infection in theSud-Ouest region has declined to low levels and seems to be progressing towards elimination. Our findings indicated that biannual CDTI is having good effect, but it should continue for a number of years to ensure elimination of transmission. However, progress towards elimination has a troublesome history in this region, and it would be advisable to select more sentinel villages to have confidence in any future epidemiological and entomological surveys, especially Stop-MDA surveys. With positive individuals migrating between countries, cross-border col...

Stigma experiences, effects and coping among individuals affected by Buruli ulcer and yaws in Ghana
Conclusions and significanceThe types and levels of stigma varied for BU and yaws. Stigma experiences also differed for adults and children in this setting and these differences should be accounted for in integrated interventions for these skin NTDs. School health programs need to prioritize educating school teachers about skin NTDs and the negative impact of stigma on the wellbeing of children. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)
