Pharmacotherapy of Anxiety Disorders: Current and Emerging Treatment Options
Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent psychiatric disorders and a leading cause of disability. While there continues to be expansive research in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and schizophrenia, there is a relative dearth of novel medications under investigation for anxiety disorders. This review's first aim is to summarize current pharmacological treatments (both approved and off-label) for panic disorder (PD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and specific phobias (SP), including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibi...

Kava (Piper methysticum) Extract for the Treatment of Nervous Anxiety, Tension and Restlessness
Conclusions Overall, the study confirms the effective and safe short-term use of kava in the Commission E-defined indication of “nervous anxiety, tension and restlessness”, especially in other than chronic cases. The clinical use of kava might be translated into context-related phobias according to ICD-10 F40, or to nervous tension (ICD10 R45.0) or restlessness and excitation (ICD-10 R45.1). Yangonin inhibits ethanol-induced hepatocyte senescence via miR-194/FXR axis.
Abstract Chronic alcohol assumption has been recognized as a major cause of alcoholic liver disease (ALD), which ranges from alcoholic steatohepatitis to fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Alcoholic liver disease has become the leading cause of liver-related health problem in the world. Herewith, effective therapeutic strategy for alcoholic liver disease is necessary. Yangonin (Yan), a bioactive compound extract from Kava, has been reported to exert hepatoprotective effects via Farnesoid X receptor (FXR) activation. The present study aims to investigate whether Yan ameliorated the ethanol-stimulated li...

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: A Brief Overview of Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Current State of Therapy
As prostatic artery embolization (PAE) is assuming an increasingly important role in the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), it is important for the practicing interventional radiologist to have a deep understanding of all aspects of the disease process and the available treatment options. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management options for BPH with an emphasis on the surgical and medical treatments. The integrated use of in silico methods for the hepatotoxicity potential of Piper methysticum.
Abstract Herbal products as supplements and therapeutic intervention have been used for centuries. However, their toxicities are not completely evaluated and the mechanisms are not clearly understood. Dried rhizome of the plant kava (Piper methysticum) is used for its anxiolytic, and sedative effects. The drug is also known for its hepatotoxicity potential. Major constituents of the plant were identified as kavalactones, alkaloids and chalcones in previous studies. Kava hepatotoxicity mechanism and the constituent that causes the toxicity have been debated for decades. In this paper, we illustrated the use...

Understanding The Complex Relationship Between Androgens and SARS-CoV2
In the United States (US), 54% of hospitalizations for COVID-19 are among men.1 In Italy, men represent 70% of COVID-19-related deaths.2 Additionally, there is a relative lack of pre-pubertal infection.3 The reason for these higher rates of infection and mortality in men, and the correspondingly low rates in pre-pubertal children remains unknown. It is possible that an androgen-dependent process may help account for these epidemiological findings, which is a topic of intense focus currently.4 –6 (Source: Urology)

Therapeutic Interventions for Adjustment Disorder: A Systematic Review
Conclusions: Psychotherapy seems indicated for mildly symptomatic adjustment disorder. Given the fact that adjustment disorder with severe symptoms is associated with a high risk of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, clinicians must consider the potential benefit of using psychotropic agents such as benzodiazepines, antidepressants, or etifoxine. Molecules, Vol. 25, Pages 2004: Synthetic Kavalactone Analogues with Increased Potency and Selective Anthelmintic Activity against Larvae of Haemonchus contortus In Vitro
bs Robin B. Gasser Kava extract, an aqueous rhizome emulsion of the plant Piper methysticum, has been used for centuries by Pacific Islanders as a ceremonial beverage, and has been sold as an anxiolytic agent for some decades. Kavalactones are a major constituent of kava extract. In a previous investigation, we had identified three kavalactones that inhibit larval development of Haemonchus contortus in an in vitro-bioassay. In the present study, we synthesized two kavalactones, desmethoxyyangonin and yangonin, as well as 17 analogues thereof, and evaluated their anthelmintic activities using the same bioassay as empl...
