Familiarity with Neuropsychological Assessment among Israeli Physicians.
CONCLUSIONS: Physicians had only general knowledge about NPA, with little practical understanding of how to refer patients to such a service. To increase referral rates and create consistent demand for effective neuropsychological services, neuropsychologists should engage in greater advocacy activity that will lead to clarification of referral procedures. Disposable glassy carbon stencil printed electrodes for trace detection of cadmium and lead.
Abstract Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) pollution is a significant environmental and human health concern, and methods to detect Cd and Pb on site are valuable. Stencil-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) are an attractive electrode material for point-of-care (POC) applications due to their low cost, ease of fabrication, disposability and portability. At present, SPCEs are exclusively formulated from graphitic carbon powder and conductive carbon ink. However, graphitic carbon SPCEs are not ideal for heavy metal sensing due to the heterogeneity of graphitic SPCE surfaces. Moreover, SPCEs typically require extensi...

Teaching Pain Management in the Era of the Opioid Epidemic: A Team Based Intervention (FR482B)
Guidelines for safe opioid prescribing practices have largely excluded palliative care populations and there is a general lack of evidence for appropriate risk mitigation measures in this population. In lieu of such guidelines many have recommended using a “universal precautions” approach using tools from the chronic pain arena. (Source: Journal of Pain and Symptom Management)

Kava for generalised anxiety disorder: A 16-week double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study.
CONCLUSION: While research has generally supported Kava in non-clinical populations (potentially for more 'situational' anxiety as a short-term anxiolytic), this particular extract was not effective for diagnosed generalised anxiety disorder. Associations between memory and verbal fluency tasks.
Abstract Previous studies have provided inconsistent evidence concerning the association between delayed retrieval of story information from long-term memory and retrieval of words on verbal fluency tasks. The current study looks for shared retrieval mechanisms in these tasks from childhood to old age. Three-hundred and eighty participants (ages 5-91) performed tasks of story recall, digit span, phonemic fluency, and semantic fluency. Significant correlations between delayed story recall and both fluency tasks emerged in all age groups, and the contribution of delayed story recall to fluency performance re...

Rapid differentiation of Piper methysticum (kava) plant parts using single point and imaging vibrational spectroscopy
This study was initiated to develop rapid, robust and alternative spectroscopic methods for quality control that can be implemented at the point of export, to authenticate the use of kava roots as legislated by the Vanuatu Amended Kava Act no. 6 (2015). Roots, peeled stems, and stump peelings samples (n = 47) were sourced from Fiji, Hawaii, Samoa, the Solomon Islands and Tonga. The sample extracts were analysed using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled to a photodiode array detector and mass spectrometer (UHPLC-PDA/MS), while powdered material was analysed using spectroscopic techniques. These included sing...

Kava and its Kavalactones Inhibit Norepinephrine-induced Intracellular Calcium Influx in Lung Cancer Cells
In this study, we characterized the effect of kava and its components, 3 fractions and 6 major kavalactones, on NE-induced intracellular calcium influx in H1299, a human non-small cell lung carcinoma cell line. Results show that kava extract effectively inhibits NE-mediated intracellular calcium influx in H1299 cells, potentially through antagonizing β-AR signaling. This inhibitory activity is recapitulated by the major kavalactones in kava. Among the 6 major kavalactones, DHK demonstrated the best potency. Taken together, our study suggests a novel mechanism through which kava and its ingredients potentially offer the an...

Kava-Induced Ichthyosis
Acquired ichthyosis is an uncommon finding in the outpatient dermatology clinic. This case portrays a presentation of ichthyosis induced by the medicinal drink, kava, which is becoming a more mainstream beverage in American culture. This case provides an overview of the clinical presentation of ichthyosis and a historical background on kava as well as recent studies on kava-induced ichthyosis or kava dermopathy. It also highlights the need to consider the use of herbal and alternative therapies when considering the underlying causes of skin disorders. Monoamine Oxidase Inhibition by Kavalactones from Kava (Piper Methysticum)
This study examined the MAO inhibition potential of kavain and other kavalactones from the roots of kava (Piper methysticum), a plant that has been used for its anxiolytic properties. (±)-Kavain was found to be a good potency in vitro inhibitor of human MAO-B with an IC50 of 5.34 µM. (±)-Kavain is a weaker MAO-A inhibitor with an IC50 of 19.0 µM. Under the same experimental conditions, the reference MAO inhibitor, curcumin, displays IC50 values of 5.01 µM and 2.55 µM for the inhibition of MAO-A and MAO-B, respectively. It was further established that (±)-kavain interacts reversibly and competitively with MAO...

Increased intestinal permeability in patients with short bowel syndrome is not affected by parenteral nutrition.
Abstract The aim of our study was to assess the presence and degree of intestinal leakage in subjects suffering from short bowel syndrome (SBS) and its modification by parenteral nutrition. To this end we assessed circulating levels of selected makers of intestinal permeability including zonulin, fatty acid binding protein 2 (FABP-2), citrulline and glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2). We also measured lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) as a marker of circulating levels of lipopolysaccharide acting through the CD14 molecule. Eleven SBS and 10 age- and BMI-matched control subjects were included into the s...
