Treatment of calcium nephrolithiasis in the patient with hyperuricosuria.
Abstract Nearly one-third of patients with calcium stones have hyperuricosuria. In vitro studies and clinical trials have investigated the relationship between uric acid and calcium stones, but the association between hyperuricosuria and calcium stone formation in patients is still being debated. Uric acid appears to cause salting out of calcium oxalate in human urine. However, the importance of this in vitro phenomenon to the proposed association is not supported in cross-sectional observational studies. A small placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial showed that allopurinol decreased the rate of rec...

Efficacy and Tolerability of Fixed-Dose Combination of Perindopril/Indapamide in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: PICASSO Trial.
CONCLUSIONS: Data from this diabetes subgroup analysis suggest that fixed combination of perindopril 10 mg/indapamide 2.5 mg should be routinely considered for the treatment of hypertension in diabetic patients who are unsuccessfully managed with other antihypertensive medications. Effects of Combination of Perindopril, Indapamide, and Calcium Channel Blockers in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Results From the Action in Diabetes and Vascular Disease: Preterax and Diamicron Controlled Evaluation (ADVANCE) Trial [Clinical Trial: ADVANCE Trial]
The objective of the present analysis was to determine the effects of a fixed combination of perindopril and indapamide in combination with calcium channel blockers (CCBs) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The Action in Diabetes and Vascular Disease: Preterax and Diamicron Controlled Evaluation (ADVANCE) trial was a factorial randomized controlled trial. A total of 11 140 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were randomly assigned to fixed combination of perindopril–indapamide (4/1.25 mg) or placebo. Effects of randomized treatment on mortality and major cardiovascular outcomes were examined in subgroups d...

The role of flavonoids in false positive digoxin assays caused by the consumption of hibiscus flower and rose hip tea
The serum digoxin level of two of our chronic heart failure patients who were not taking digoxin was accidentally measured and was reported as 0.21 and 0.22ng/ml. These patients were not taking medications that may interfere with digoxin assays. (The medications of Patient 1 included metoprolol, perindopril and acenocoumarol while Patient 2 received bisoprolol, perindopril, indapamide, allopurinol, doxazosin, potassium chloride and acenocoumarol). Neither of these patients had signs or symptoms of cardiac decompensation and both were female. They reported to have consumed the same fruit tea on a daily basis (Pickwick Fruit...

Indapamide-induced transient myopia with supraciliary effusion: case report
Conclusions: Our case report is the third one in the literature to present indapamide-induced transient myopia, and the first to employ UBM for describing the characteristics of this rare condition. According to the findings, authors suggest that both ciliary muscle contraction and ciliary body edema may play role in the pathomechanism. UBM seems to be a useful tool in the differential diagnosis of acute myopia. Further, authors wish to draw attention to one of the potential adverse effects of this drug which was not listed by its package insert. (Source: BMC Ophthalmology - Latest articles)

Electrolyte imbalance triggering relapse of inflammatory neuropathy
We describe a case of a 71 year old female with a fourteen year history of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and stable monoclonal gammopathy, normally maintained on three–weekly intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy. At her best baseline, she has a normal motor examination and reduced vibration sense only to the ankles. She presented with a four week history of progressive numbness and paresthesiae in all four limbs, reduced balance, a decline in mobility with frequent falls and reduced hand function. The deterioration developed after a week of non–bloody diarrhoea with night sweats ...

Indapamide SR effects on ambulatory brachial and aortic pressure in hypertensive patients
Aim: Ambulatory monitoring of central blood pressure (BP) is a new technique for evaluation of antihypertensive drugs efficacy. The aim of the study was to assess changes in ambulatory brachial and central BP after indapamide SR adjunction to treatment regimen in hypertensive patients. (Source: Artery Research)

Increased pulse pressure linked to dementia: further results from the Hypertension in the Very Elderly Trial - HYVET
Conclusion:Wider PP may possibly indicate an increased risk for dementia. Active treatment may act to change the shape of the relationship between DBP and dementia. Future studies need to focus on exploring the ideal goal pressure for this age group. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Effects of Antihypertensive Drugs on Central Blood Pressure in Humans: A Preliminary Observation.
CONCLUSIONS: The 3 antihypertensive drugs similarly reduced peripheral and central BP, as compared with placebo, but a significant increase in pulse pressure amplification was obtained only with indapamide, independently of arterial stiffness modifications. Prevalence of hyponatremia among patients who used indapamide and hydrochlorothiazide: a single center retrospective study.
Abstract Hyponatremia is the most frequently encountered electrolyte abnormality among hospitalized patients and thiazide users. In this large single-center retrospective study, we aim to determine the prevalence and risk factors of hyponatremia among patients at the King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such study in Saudi Arabia. A chart review was done for the years 2011-2012 of all admitted Saudi patients at KAMC who were treated with indapamide and hydrochlorothiazide. A total of 2000 patients were included [1237 females (629 indapamid...

Patient-centered Medical Therapy for Nephrolithiasis
Objective: To elucidate the effect of a patient-centered combined nutritional and medical therapy approach on stone disease management, guided by 24-hour urinary stone risk.Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the records of patients treated at our multidisciplinary stone clinic from July 2007 to February 2009. Included were adult stone formers who presented with severe urinary abnormalities or whose urinary parameters failed to improve with dietary changes. Urinary risk factors for stone disease were evaluated before and after intervention with 24-hour urine collections. Hypercalciuria was treated with hydro...
