Recurrent Venous Thromboembolism in Patients on Anticoagulation: An Update Based on the Revised AWMF S2k Guideline
Hamostaseologie. 2024 Apr;44(2):150-154. doi: 10.1055/a-2173-7729. Epub 2024 Apr 30.ABSTRACTIn the recently updated German S2k Guideline "Diagnostics and Therapy of Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism," a new chapter was incorporated about recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients on anticoagulation treatment. Despite the high efficacy of anticoagulation in most patients, approximately 2% experience a recurrent VTE event while receiving anticoagulant drugs. The proper diagnosis of the recurrent VTE is important and possible only with the knowledge of localization and thrombus burden of the primary VTE event. ...

Drawing and storing blood using a 3D printed bottle cap and a disinfected 500 mL drinking bottle: A proof-of-concept study
CONCLUSION: This study indicates that drawing blood is both feasible and safe, utilizing a 3D printed cap and bottle setup. Flow rate was faster than control, and mechanical properties of the blood were not affected. We were unable to determine the source of bacterial contamination in the blood.PMID:38686607 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17848 (Source: Transfusion)

A cold case of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn resolved by genomic sequencing and population studies to define a new antigen in the Rh system
CONCLUSION: This antibody was of clinical significance, resulting in a mild to moderate hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). In the past, the cause of such HDFN cases may have remained unresolved. Genomic sequencing combined with population studies now assists in resolving such cases. Further population studies have potential to inform the need to design population-specific red cell antibody typing panels for antibody screening in the Australian population.PMID:38686705 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17205 (Source: Transfusion)

Clinical features of immature leukemias in children
Int J Hematol. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1007/s12185-024-03771-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEarly T-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ETP-ALL), mixed phenotypic acute leukemia (MPAL), and acute myeloid leukemia with minimal differentiation (AML-M0) all originate from immature hematopoietic progenitor cells and have a poor prognosis. We investigated the clinical characteristics of these immature leukemias in 17 children (ETP-ALL: 8, MPAL: 5, AML-M0: 4) at seven institutions. Clinical and laboratory findings were comparable across disease types. Eleven and six patients received ALL- and AML-oriented induction chemo...

Light-Chain Cardiac Amyloidosis: Cardiac Magnetic Resonance for Assessing Response to Chemotherapy
CONCLUSION: Cardiac amyloid deposition can regress following chemotherapy in patients with AL-CA, particularly showing more prominent regression, possibly earlier, in the RV. CMR emerges as an effective tool for monitoring associated tissue characteristics and ventricular functional recovery in patients with AL-CA undergoing chemotherapy, thereby supporting its utility in treatment response assessment.PMID:38685733 | PMC:PMC11058424 | DOI:10.3348/kjr.2023.0985 (Source: Korean J Radiol)

Atrial Septal Abnormalities and Cryptogenic Stroke: A Cross-Sectional Study
CONCLUSION: Based on our results, the prevalence of atrial septal abnormalities was relatively high. Considering these issues and the importance of preventing neurological accidents in patients, especially young people, it is recommended to always consider atrial septal disorders and, if diagnosed, to carry out the necessary treatment in this field.PMID:38685781 | DOI:10.2174/011871529X294809240415070950 (Source: Cardiovascular and Hematological Disorders Drug Targets)

Predicting Amputation Rates in Acute Limb Ischemia: Is the Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio a Reliable Indicator?
Conclusions Based on our findings, the main factor affecting the need for amputation in ALI patients was the symptom-to-door time. Biochemical and hematological parameters had no effect on amputation in ALI.PMID:38686104 | PMC:PMC11057397 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.59253 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Impact of sub-chronic polystyrene nanoplastics exposure on hematology, histology, and endoplasmic reticulum stress-related protein expression in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
Comp Biochem Physiol B Biochem Mol Biol. 2024 Apr 28:110982. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpb.2024.110982. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNanoplastics (NPs) are one of the most hazardous marine litters, having the potential to cause far-reaching impacts on the environment and humankind. The effect of NPs on fish health has been studied, but their impact on the subcellular organelles remains unexplored. The present investigation studied the possible implications of polystyrene-nanoplastics (PS-NPs) on the hematology, tissue organization, and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related proteins in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish ...

Long-term Outcomes of Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Unrelated Donors Mobilized with Filgrastim
Blood Adv. 2024 Apr 30:bloodadvances.2024012646. doi: 10.1182/bloodadvances.2024012646. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAllogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation is a life-saving procedure used to treat of a variety of devastating diseases. It requires hematopoietic stem cells collected via filgrastim mobilized peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow harvest from volunteer unrelated donors. There is a paucity of safety data regarding donors' long-term adverse events. This prospective, observational study combined peripheral blood stem cell donors enrolled on the NMDP Investigational New Drug trial and bone marrow dono...

The history of haploidentical stem cell transplantation: a trip from the bench to the bedside
Hematology. 2024 Dec;29(1):2346401. doi: 10.1080/16078454.2024.2346401. Epub 2024 Apr 30.ABSTRACTAllogeneic bone marrow transplantation is a curative intervention for both neoplastic and non-malignant conditions. However, not all patients have an HLA-matched donor. Therefore, the development of an approach that expand the donor pool was of paramount relevance. The development of post-transplantation cyclophosphamide as graft versus host disease prophylaxis allows the safe use of haploidentical donors, solving the donor availability problem to the vast majority of patients in need. The present paper reviews the history of t...
