Measuring the effectiveness of online search ads on blood donor recruitment and donation
CONCLUSION: We developed a method for determining the effectiveness of online search ads on donation outcomes. Rewards/promotions messaging was most effective at recruiting first-time donors. Our methodology is generalizable to different blood centers to explore messaging effectiveness among their unique communities.PMID:38693096 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17850 (Source: Transfusion)

Severe neonatal thrombocytopenia due to anti-HPA-4b alloantibodies: Third report described in a Caucasian mother
CONCLUSION: We described the third case of anti-HPA-4b alloantibody discovered in a Caucasian mother. This case strengthens the need for reference laboratory to genotype a panel of HPA alleles reflecting local genetic population diversity and for crossmatch of maternal serum with fresh paternal platelets in clinical suspected cases of neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia.PMID:38693097 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17863 (Source: Transfusion)

Survival of transfused red blood cells from a donor with alpha-thalassemia trait in a recipient with sickle cell disease
We present one recipient, a pediatric patient with SCD and splenectomy who received two RBC units with aliquots from each unit labeled at distinct biotin densities (2 and 18 μg/mL biotin). One donor unit was identified to have microcytosis (MCV 68.5 fL after biotinylation); whole blood sample obtained at a subsequent donation showed 2-gene deletion alpha-thalassemia trait (ɑ-3.7kb/ɑ-3.7kb) and normal serum ferritin. G6PD activity was >60% of normal mean for both. The RBCs with alpha-thalassemia RBC had accelerated clearance and increased surface phosphatidylserine post-transfusion, as compared with the normocytic RBC...

Prevention of post-operative adhesions: Model development and pilot outcomes of human placental stem cell-based interventions
This study presents a novel rat model for abdominal adhesions and reports pilot results of human placental stem cell (hPSC)-based therapies.METHODS: Forty-four (n = 44) male Sprague-Dawley rats (250-350 g) were used in the experiment. Of these, thirty-eight (n = 38) were included in a preliminary data set to determine a minimum treatment effect. Adhesions were created in a reproducible model to the abdominal wall and between organs. Experimental groups included the control group (Model No Treatment, MNT), Plasmalyte A (Media Alone, MA, 10 mL), hPSC (5 × 106 cells/10 mL Plasmalyte A), hPSC-CM (hPSC secretome, conditioned m...

Navigating the challenges: a case report on managing a complicated postpartum course in type 3 von Willebrand disease with alloantibodies
CONCLUSION: The current case emphasizes the postpartum clinical challenges of patients with type 3 VWD and alloantibodies. It underscores the potential role of emicizumab in maintaining hemostatic control.PMID:38689620 | PMC:PMC11058073 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2024.102399 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Predictive performance of pharmacokinetic-guided prophylactic dosing of factor concentrates in hemophilia A and B
CONCLUSION: PK-guided dosing was reliable according to post hoc analyses, based on low absolute errors that were regarded as clinically irrelevant in most cases. The predefined predictive performance was achieved in mid and peak factor levels but not in trough factor levels due to measurement inaccuracy. PK guidance also seemed feasible.PMID:38689619 | PMC:PMC11058079 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2024.102397 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Positive anti-nuclear antibody in patients with polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia suggests the presence of multiple distinct comorbidities
Conclusion These results establish a previously underappreciated unique immunological state of multimorbidity in PHGG and indicate that the gamma-globulin levels and ANAs could serve as markers for the clinical assessment of comorbidities in PHGG.PMID:38692914 | DOI:10.2169/internalmedicine.3594-24 (Source: Internal Medicine)

Evolution of natural killer cell-targeted therapy for acute myeloid leukemia
Int J Hematol. 2024 May 1. doi: 10.1007/s12185-024-03778-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn hematologic oncology, acute myeloid leukemia (AML) presents a significant challenge due to its complex genetic landscape and resistance to conventional therapies. Despite advances in treatment, including intensive chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), the prognosis for many patients with AML remains poor. Recently, immunotherapy has emerged as a promising approach to improve outcomes by augmenting existing treatments. Natural killer (NK) cells, a subset of innate lymphoid cells, have garnered attention fo...

High CD34-positive cell dose in matched unrelated donor allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant is not associated with graft-versus-host disease or mortality
DISCUSSION: We found no difference in survival, relapse, or GVHD incidence or severity in patients receiving CD34+ doses above prior cutoffs reported in the literature. These data do not support the routine use of graft CD34+ dose reduction.PMID:38693089 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17864 (Source: Transfusion)
