Plasmablastic myeloma transformation of light-chain multiple myeloma
J Clin Exp Hematop. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.3960/jslrt.24004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPlasmablastic myeloma (PBM) is an uncommon and aggressive morphologic variant of multiple myeloma (MM). The neoplastic immature cells exhibit diverse morphology, posing a diagnostic challenge. The diagnostic criteria for PBM include the identification of ≥ 2% plasmablasts in the bone marrow aspirate. This case describes the incidental finding of a light-chain multiple myeloma (LCMM) transformed into PBM, a phenomenon not previously reported.PMID:38684404 | DOI:10.3960/jslrt.24004 (Source: Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hematopathology : JCEH)

Spontaneous regression and rare relapse after excisional biopsy in long-term observation of 31 patients with primary conjunctival lymphoma
J Clin Exp Hematop. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.3960/jslrt.24002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo elucidate long-term outcome in primary conjunctival lymphoma, a review was conducted of 31 consecutive patients: 21 men and 10 women with an age range of 28 to 85 (median, 61) years at presentation and follow-up periods ranging from 1 to 19 (median, 7) years. Conjunctival lymphoma was on the right side in 10 patients, on the left side in 12, and on both sides in 9. Upper, lower, or both fornix lesions in 28 patients were all diagnosed as extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma), w...

Guidelines-based therapeutic strategies for controlling hypertension in non-controlled hypertensive patients followed by family physicians in primary health care in Portugal: the GPHT-PT study
CONCLUSION: In patients with uncontrolled HTN, therapeutic measures in accordance with guidelines, with a fixed combination candesartan/amlodipine, allowed to overall achieve HTN control at 12 weeks in 82% of previously uncontrolled HTN patients, reinforcing the advantages of these strategies in primary clinical practice.PMID:38680045 | DOI:10.1080/08037051.2024.2345887 (Source: Blood Pressure)

Preclinical safety evaluation of the ethanolic extract from < em > campomanesia guazumifolia < /em > (cambess.) O. Berg fruits peels in rats
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Apr 29:1-5. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2347447. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe toxicological potential of the ethanolic extract from Campomanesia guazumifolia (EECG), a species traditionally recognised for its antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and hypercholesterolemic properties, was investigated in acute and subacute toxicity models in rats. In the acute toxicity test, 2000 mg/kg of EECG was administered orally in female rats, while male and female rats received 250, 500 or 750 mg/kg of EECG for the subacute toxicity test. No evidence of toxicity was observed in the animals acutely exposed, indicating ...

Not just for lymphoid cells: The role of the noncanonical NF- κB signaling pathway in early and late myelopoiesis with a focus on hypereosinophilic disorders
J Leukoc Biol. 2024 Apr 29:qiae101. doi: 10.1093/jleuko/qiae101. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe noncanonical NF-κB pathway is involved in lymphoid organ development, B cell maturation, and cytokine production. However, new research has demonstrated that this pathway is also key for the orderly and sequential maturation of myeloid cells, including neutrophils and eosinophils. When this pathway is disrupted or constitutively activated, aberrations in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) survival and proliferation, as well as subsequent granulopoiesis and eosinophilopoiesis are affected. Disturbance of such a coo...

Edoxaban, Rivaroxaban or Apixaban for Cancer-Associated Venous Thromboembolism in the Real World: Insights from the COMMAND VTE Registry-2
CONCLUSIONS: The risks of recurrent VTE and all-cause death did not differ significantly among the different DOACs ; however, the risk of bleeding events could differ, with a potentially lower risk of bleeding with rivaroxaban.PMID:38684190 | DOI:10.1055/a-2316-5269 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Thrombin generation profile using ST-Genesia after PEG-asparaginase in pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
CONCLUSIONS: TGT could be a biomarker of a high VTE risk in ALL pediatric patients. Patients > 10 years, of non-O blood group and with inherited thrombophilia were associated with a significantly higher thrombotic profile, and an increased profile was also observed after administration of PEG-ASP.PMID:38684189 | DOI:10.1055/a-2316-4547 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Improving platelet function following prophylactic platelet transfusion in patients with hematological malignancies
CONCLUSION: Prophylactic transfusion improved platelet function. Platelet function significantly improved in patients with a CCI >4500, those with the same blood types as that of apheresis platelets, or those with platelet-derived microparticle levels <4.7%. No significant improvement in platelet function was noted after the transfusion of different blood types with acceptable compatibility or the transfusion of incompatible blood types. Our results suggest that transfusing platelets with the same blood type remains the optimal choice.PMID:38682289 | DOI:10.1111/ijlh.14283 (Source: International Journal of Laboratory Hematology)

Human herpesvirus type 6 in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus
CONCLUSION: Although patients with SLE had a higher prevalence of HHV-6 compared with healthy people, there is no strong link between HHV-6 infection and SLE. Future research is necessary because this data does not support the hypothesis that human herpesvirus 6 plays a role in the pathogenesis of SLE.PMID:38682068 | PMC:PMC11055447 | DOI:10.18502/ijm.v16i1.14883 (Source: Iranian Journal of Microbiology)

Regulation of Hypoxia Dependent Reprogramming of Cancer Metabolism: Role of HIF-1 and Its Potential Therapeutic Implications in Leukemia
This article examines various cancer cell metabolisms, metabolic alterations that can take place in cancer cells, metabolic pathways, and molecular aspects of metabolic alteration in cancer cells placing special attention on the consequences of hypoxia-inducible factor and summarising some of their novel targets in the treatment of cancer including leukemia. A brief description of HIF-1α's role and target in a few common types of hematological malignancies (leukemia) is also elucidated in the present article.PMID:38679971 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2024.25.4.1121 (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention)
