Inflation Reduction Act Impact on Oncology Reimbursement
Hello, first-time poster on this forum, I'm creating this thread to ask a question about the impact of the recently passed (2022) Inflation Reduction Act on heme/onc compensation. Some caveats, I know predicting future compensation is always difficult and not a reason to choose/not choose a sub-specialty, but I do want to be as informed as possible as I consider a future career path. From what I understand, much of the compensation in Heme/Onc that accounts for the high salary for a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

I think I ’m being bullied at my job
Hi, when I joined my job - I was supposed to be single hospital based with 3 inpatient and 2 outpatient days. We are in a way RVU based , and the amount I get paid is pretty much in line with what is fair market value in this area. We are a hospital employed group. However the structure of my job is I think extremely lopsided in terms of call and weekend coverage . For instance weekends are unequally distributed - I got more weekend days than the rest - and when I asked why I was told... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Learning in Fellowship w/o Fellows Clinic?
I’m a 3rd year IM resident who is preparing to start fellowship in July at an NCI CCC, but not an extremely prestigious one. Although my program has a lot of positives to it, it does not have a fellows clinic, even at the VA interestingly enough. I have often heard about the value of the autonomy you get in a fellows clinic. Although I’m not sure I can close the clinical gap all the way, I would like to be as well trained as possible. How should I approach preparing for an attendings clinic... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Prostate cancer practice
Pretty self-explanatory. Do you think you can survive in the community with just Prostate Cancer? If not, what about if you add bladder and kidney? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Why is heme onc not considered a lifestyle speciality?
Recently been told by people heme onc is not considered a lifestyle speciality. Was told just cause you see patients in the clinic 4 days a week doesn't mean it's a lifestyle speciality. Was also told heme/onc =/= outpatient cancer visits. For someone who values personal time, lifestyle and like outpatient/clinic more; do you think oncology is not considered a lifestyle speciality? Drug talks
As a fellow, I attended many pharma sponsored drug dinners. A lot of the speakers were academic faculty in the disease-specific field of the drug. However, there were several community oncologists, especially private practice oncologists, who gave these talks. I'm assuming they get paid at least a couple thousand per talk, as several of them were driven from several states away to our area to give the talks. How do I get involved in this as a private practice doc just starting out? Would... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

clinic resources

What's the average salary for an academic oncologist?

Would you continue working if you won the lottery?
Was talking to an orthopod recently, he had been involved in the development of a medical device and receives a massive check every year from royalties for it. He no longer needs to work to live comfortably. But he continues to work a ton, see patients, and operate all day, because he absolutely loves his job and loves helping his patients. Was curious if onc folks on here feel the same way about their work? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Secondary Polycythemia
New attending here. Hoping to get some advice from those of you practicing for a while. I just started a job in a somewhat rural setting. I get a lot of Heme referrals from PCPs, pulmonologists, etc for patients for polycythemia. These are almost always known tobacco abuse cases, COPD, etc. We were always taught in training to treat the underlying cause, but the referring docs and patients expect to be treated with therapeutic phlebotomy. Some of them have had this issue for years and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Inbox management and other lifestyle questions
Incoming fellow. I made the mistake of joining the multiple physician Facebook groups and found these comments about the heme-onc lifestyle (can delete if this isn't allowed on sdn). The world today has moved very fast in Oncology, I spend 1 hour every night reviewing the latest data and still cannot keep up. The other half of my free time is fighting for scans and chemotherapy drugs that people need. And during my workout time, I try to answer all patient messages can be 50-100 a day... When did you start feeling comfortable?
I'm a new attending in my first year out from fellowship. I feel like a significant number of things I learned in fellowship are already outdated and it seems to be the trend is intensification of therapies (and hence side effects). How long did it take for things to start slowing down for you, or is it just the nature of the beast now that our field is perpetually at high speed. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Job search limited to a few metro areas - advice appreciated!
Hello all, I'm a second year fellow (no visa sponsorship required) looking to join a community or hybrid heme/onc practice. Due to my spouse's job, I am constrained to practices ideally within 1 hour of the following metro areas: - Dallas/FW - Denver - Seattle - Portland I don't have any local contacts in these areas so I'm hoping some of you may be able to advise me on general salary expectations (all these areas are desirable and I know there can be quite a bit of heterogeneity between...
