Median $/wRVU Heme Onc - Different Surveys
Hello seasoned Heme Oncs - What is the median $/wRVU your hospital pays for comp? Ours in a small semi-urban setting is about $83-84 since new CMS updates. about 3.5 hrs away from a large city. They follow Sullivan Cotter but do not share data. Planning on negotiation discussion but difficult to get Sullivan Cotter data for fair negotiations. Anyone knows where to buy it from? any contract attorneys out there who can share data/consult with a fee? Any other tips? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How many patients you see in clinic in fellowship?
Hello everyone, What is the average number of patients you have seen in clinic per day as a fellow in first, 2nd and 3rd year? I'm a fellow in a academic/community hybrid program. We are seeing 7-10 in first year, ~15 in second year and upto 20 in third year. This is not a fellow run clinic. It is very busy and always thought to be as 'more patients you see more learning you'll get', which is true but it seems to increase work load/documentation at the same time which cuts down on study... 1 year fellowship before applying to Hem-Onc
Hello, I am PGY-2 in community hospital trying to boost my chances to match into Hem-onc fellowship. So due to lack of research, connections and my VISA status, my chances are limited so I was trying to find if there is a chance of doing 1 year fellowship BEFORE applying to the match. I know people have done that in other specialties ( applying to advanced heart failure fellowship prior to cardiology or hepatology fellowship prior to GI). I was wondering if there is something similar in... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

W2 vs 1099
*** X-posted from the main IM subspecialties page *** For the same income; and relatively low expenses, is it better to be on W2 or 1099 Income : 1M Annual expenses : 200k Let's say your total annual expenses including everything (car lease, mortgage, kids tuition, underwear, shaving cream , absolutely everything) is $200k. So 200k becomes the upper limit of what you can possibly deduct. 1099 route ------------- With 1m, and taking these 200k deductions, taxable income becomes 800k. So... Stick to my current IDR or go with the SAVE plan?
Hi, I graduated from my fellowship last year and has been practicing as a hematologist oncologist for over a year now. I applied for the PSLF waiver when it was available and it looks like I got approved for the six years of my residency plus fellowship. The place I am working at right now also qualifies for PSLF. I am wondering if I should recertify my IDR now under the SAVE plan to save on interests. The last time I recertified my IDR was november 2020. My IDR I believe is due in July of... Is Salary during ACGME accredited fellowship secured?
I’m a second year fellow and the PD sent me an indirect message that my research activities has to be funded to pay 50% of my salary. I didn’t hear about this requirement and I don’t remember that any program mentioned that I have to have a fund to cover my salary during the fellowship. My wife is a heme/onc fellow as well and her PD said he didn’t hear about this before. Also, my co-fellow told me the PD never talked to him about fund. Do you have any advice on how to manage this... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Are program rankings overrated?
Recently been lurking on the heme onc application spreadsheet and have noticed a lot of fighting over tiers of programs, like minutiae: "this program should be 2a vs 2b". There are legit people in that spreadsheet that are basing their self-esteem on this and it makes me wonder if I am missing something... My understanding prior to all this is that prestige is a product of programs having support for research, which only matters if you want a research career. The other point is that even... Billing - Benign Heme
Very new to attending life and trying to figure out how to bill new benign heme pts, which is currently the majority of my pts. Appreciate any help! My issue is that I chart review the day before - I feel super uncomfortable doing it the day of, as I currently take forever looking over the chart, looking up guidelines, and also want time to reach out to others for help if I need it. I also pre-write my note the day before. But of course, this means on the day of, I have much less time to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Flailing MD/PhD Thinking of Back-up Career
Hello, everyone - I have a story as old as time (or at least as old as the NIH MSTP training pathway), and I just wanted help getting some perspective. Highlights: - MD/PhD graduate late 2010s - did a fast-track IM residency - and now in a second year of a heme-onc fellowship, physician-scientist track I didn't match at my dream place by any stretch for fellowship, but it had a critical mass of research and is a place with some great scientists. The program also tried to recruit me and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Informing patients of bad news
Hey everyone I’m a relatively new attending, I was wondering how everyone approached delivering patients bad news. I have EPIC so sometimes patients will see the results of their own liver biopsy and my practice pattern is to typically say we will discuss scans & results at the next visit, especially if it doesn’t change management. But I sometimes run into the case where a scan will show disease progression and I’m not sure if they would benefit from a phone call prior to the visit to... CAR-T as a career
Hi, I haven't posted on here in a while. I'm a first year Heme/Onc fellow at a mid tier academic program. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on what CAR-T therapy might be like as a career. Can someone start working in this field as a career straight out of fellowship or would there need to be further specialization after graduating like must I do a nonaccredited CAR-T fellowship? Would I need to focus on BMT or hematologic malignancies in fellowship? What will the demand... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is hem/onc lifestyle comparable to derm?
Obviously one should not pursue either of these fields based on lifestyle, however I often hear about how dermatology has a great lifestyle since it can have a 4 day work week/400k a year/minimal call. However, it seems to me that this setup is also very possible and not uncommon in private practice hem onc. Am I incorrect? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What does call look like as a private practice hem/onc attending?
Specifically, I'm curious about how frequently overnight call is usually taken, how often you get called, and what you end up having to do when called (in a standard private practice environment). Thank you! (Source: Student Doctor Network)
