Patient volumes for junior attending
Hi, just wondering if anyone here could comment on what patient volumes they have been seeing as a junior attending a year or two into practice. Looking into applying for jobs right now - Would you say that around ~15-16 pts a year into practice is a reasonable ask? I don’t want to be seeing too many patients also as a general oncologist as they’re complicated and not having a disease specific community position makes it hard to catch up on everything. Also how many new patients (including... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Time spent preparing for next day's clinic
I am a fresh-out-of-fellowship HemOnc working in a hospital-employed community practice setting. I just wanted to know the thoughts of people here as to how long they spend preparing for their clinic patients? I have been spending my entire evening (4-5 hours) preparing for my next day's clinic, going over every chart in detail, reviewing NCCN guidelines and looking up info on UpToDate as I am worried I might miss something. I work 4.5 days a week in clinic and have around 12-15 patients per... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Board re-eligibility retraining programs
Hello all, As per the ABIM, for a med onc (me) whose board eligibility period has lapsed, it’s possible to become board re-eligible again by doing a 12-month Fellowship retraining program that can be arranged with the PD at an accredited program. This retraining is not as part of the normal complement, therefore no positions are being taken away from anyone. ABIM said that actually 60 people complete such a “retraining” at different programs across the country…but they couldn’t share... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Primary Care Job - Saturated Cities!?
Are there any cities currently saturated for primary care jobs for those boarded in internal medicine or family medicine? What about for the IM sub-specialties gastroenterology, cardiology, hematology/oncology, critical care/pulmonary, nephrology, or allergy/immunology? Can you pretty much pick your city for primary care or are jobs harder to come by in certain cities like LA or NYC? Also, what is the expected salary for LA or NYC in primary care? What is the expected salary in the IM... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Special Consideration Pathway Pilot Program for International Medical Graduates Who Meet ACGME ’s Exceptionally Qualified Candidate Criteria
I received an email from the ABIM Medical Oncology board discussing a pathway to bypass the US Internal Medicine residency and enter a fellowship program for certification. Similar to the encroachment of APP in medical subspecialties, it is reasonable to have concerns about the potential impact on the availability of fellowship spots or the job market. While addressing the physician shortage is important, it is unclear why governing bodies would resort to truncating training duration or... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Negotiating a contract at academic hematology positions NYC metro area
Hello I was wondering how much negotiating you can do on the offers they give you? Will they be open if I ask for a higher compensation or more vacation time? Also any NYC hospitals to avoid? Thanks for your help. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Job at a new cancer center
I'm a 2nd-year fellow at a great institution entertaining the idea of working at a new university cancer center that will begin clinical operations the year before my joining. From my understanding, there are only two surg oncs, two med oncs, and a rad onc. No fellowship program (yet?), but there is an IM residency program and medical school. I anticipate a lack of academic mentorship at the new university cancer center may restrict my career g, growth but the idea of developing a quality... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Taking Heme or Onc board exam in 3rd year - which should I choose?
I'm a rising 2nd year fellow and haven't had much chance to study for boards this year. Senior fellows who have chosen to take one of their boards in 3rd year are pretty split, so I wonder which one people think would be smarter to take first. FWIW, my tentative plan for studying for both boards in aggregate is to read ASH-SAP and ASCO-SEP, do the ASCO and ASH qbanks, do the HOQ bank 1-2x, and probably watch a review series from MDACC or the like. Trying to learn!
Hello! I am a current medical student who is very interested in oncology. I am trying to learn more about current treatments and where we are generally with various types of cancer. Does anyone know of a good review article that summarizes current treatment models for a range of different cancers? I can only find articles that focus on very specific things, but I need something more general to just get a broad idea before I delve into details. If you know of any, I would greatly appreciate... Academic Salary in BMT
I'm a BMT-focused fellow applying for jobs later this year, and would like to stay in academia (but not wedded to it). I am completely oblivious to how compensation works for physicians. What is a typical starting salary for an academic transplant physician? Let's say I do 2 full day clinics a week (~38 patients including 6 new), plus inpatient BMT service one week every month. How many RVUs would this generate, and how does salary/clinic volume compare in non-academic places? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Inpatient career options
Hey Folks, I just wanted to ask people here who are more experienced on the career trail about whether / how they've seen inpatient-focused heme/onc jobs laid out? (especially @whoknows2012). I'm entertaining the idea of looking for a hospital-employed gig with a 7-on 7-off shift work model. I don't really want to do BMT but I really do enjoy inducing leukemias / lymphomas / small cell lung cancers and seeing various consults in the hospital, then bidding "adieu" to patients when... Hemolysis question
I see LDH/haptoglobin ordered a lot in ICUs and was wondering how much of this is truly necessary. Does normal bilirubin pretty much rule out significant hemolysis or is there additional utility in ordering LDH/haptoglobin? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

PhD in Immunology
Hello Everyone! I hope you're well. I am a final year US-Img who is considering doing a PhD. I haven't given my Steps yet. A PhD Immunology (not in America but in top 150 university globally) is what I'm thinking. I plan to pursue a career in heme/onc. Since immunotherapy is the future, can this help me in my match application for medicine? Or will the PhD have more effect on my fellowship match? I know MD-PhD is beneficial when applying to Rad Onc but don't know about IM. This last question... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
