When did you know heme/onc was right for you?
I'm a new intern at a very well regarded IM program and am just considering my options for fellowship moving forward. Currently bouncing around the idea of GI vs heme/onc (I realize they're fairly different). When in your training did you commit to applying heme/onc? Unfortunately, my program does not allot interns much elective time and I'm not scheduled for any heme/onc blocks. I'm worried it will be difficult to commit without any direct exposure. Mainly interested in the onc side... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Working while on vacation
Just curious as a sort of informal poll how many people "do work" during vacation/weekends - and if so do you check EHR inbox once a day, multiple times per day, etc? I am trying to figure out my own balance. For those who disconnect completely, how do you deal with situations for, where example, a pt is admitted and needs your input for goals of care discussion, etc? Or do you not check the inbox at all and have your partners call you in these scenarios? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

2022 MGMA median salary
I just heard from a practice currently hiring that the new median income for hem/onc is $495k, and RVU is ~$100. Do practices that are currently hiring use the latest MGMA data or do they use last year's? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How difficult is it to match into a heme onc fellowship. DO candidate with 23x/23x step 1 and 2.
Hi all, currently a 2nd year IM resident and thinking about doing heme onc.... I already completed a heme onc rotation last year and I have another heme onc rotation coming up this year. Wondering how much work and research I need to do to match into any heme onc fellowship. I'm a DO IM resident at a small new community program and I have a 230 and 237 on steps 1 and 2. I've been doing decent so far and wondering what should I do to have a strong chance to match. Is it just publishing and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Locums?
I'm going to be graduating fellowship next year and I'm interviewing at jobs currently. I'm single in my early 30s and have lived in rural areas before and am perfectly willing to move often. From what I'm seeing on the locums market now it seems the demand for oncologists is red hot, seeing offers between $3,000-5,000/d depending on the need of the locations. What I'd like to know is if I did locums out of fellowship would this be a red flag for future practices if I eventually wanted to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Cancelling ABIM
Just graduated IM residency, busy with fellowship. Wanted to delay taking my ABIM by one year... I keep reading that we are board eligible for 7 years and that canceling ABIM last minute does not have huge repercussions other than loss of 30% registration fee. I guess my questions are: 1) Are there any repercussions other than having to study for an extra year 2) Where is it stated that we are board eligible for 7 years? I am trying to find it on the ABIM website but cannot (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How important is the physical exam in medical oncology?
The physical exam is obviously really important for surgical oncologists and radiation oncologists will routinely do DREs, pelvic exams, breast exams, flexible laryngoscopy, etc. I am curious how important the physical exam is in medical oncology? Do medical oncologists tend to perform DREs, pelvic exams, laryngoscopy like rad oncs? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What are my chances to match to hem/onc fellowship this year cycle.
Hello community I want to get your thoughts on my chances to match into hem/onc fellowship position. First I am an IMG I applied once before but didn't match . My biggest red flag is I am out of residency for 4 years now, other red ( or yellow) flags including scores in the 240s, mediocre residency program and no much awards. After residency yeI worked as an oncology hospitalist and to boost my chances I just finished one year non ACGME accredited fellowship... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Inpatient-only oncology positions
Some academic centers now have oncologists who focus exclusively on inpatient care, e.g., this group at DFCI: Oncology Hospital Medicine (Inpatient Care) - Dana-Farber Cancer Institute | Boston, MA. I am wondering if taking such a position straight out of fellowship could potentially be a career-limiting move. For example, if I wanted to do inpatient-only oncology for a few years then move into a more traditional outpatient heme/onc role later on (either in academia vs. community)... Medical Oncology fellowship (2y) vs Heme Onc (3y)
Can anybody comment on pros/cons of doing a 3 year heme onc fellowship over a 2y medical oncology fellowship? I've seen posts around of people saying they don't use much of the heme training? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Heme onc fellowship questions re lifestyle and research
I’m incoming IM intern debating between primary care and heme onc but I guess given how competitive heme onc is I’ll have to proceed as if I’m applying heme onc. I’ve been looking at fellowships and it seems that some programs have a heavy research component. What does that look like day-to-day as a fellow? Is it mainly working from home on those days? Since my interest is health disparities, I don’t anticipate wet lab work (unless they make you?) Would that mean lifestyle wise, I’d be... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
