Subspecialty+Palliative Care in academic setting
Hi everyone, Just wondering if there's anyone who's board certified/eligible in both HPM and a subspecialty of some sort (or primary care/hospitalist) who's able to practice both in an academic setting? (i.e. someone who's boarded in Medical Oncology/Hematology/Nephrology/PCCM etc. and HPM who does a mix of both, or someone who does a week of hospitalist + 1 week of HPM, rinse and repeat.) Basic question: can a person practice both another specialty/their original primary specialty and HPM... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Job prospects for low tier fellowship
Hi everyone, I matched hematology/oncology at a hybrid community-academic program that is not well known and far away from my desired region (but has a good reputation in my region). My ultimate goal is to practice in California due to family reasons. My question is: will I be able to make it back to Califronia? Just scrolling the names of attendings in major californian heme/onc private practices I see alot of fancy names (e.g. Yale, DFCI, UCSF) and the like. I am worried with low name... I need advice regarding my options after not matching in heme-onc this year.
I am a non-US IMG (non-visa requiring), currently PGY-3 in a NYC community program. I couple-matched at this program with my wife (US-IMG), and she applied to PCCM fellowship. Our experience in this NYC community program was less than ideal, so we both decided to do our fellowships outside of NY. We prioritized staying together, ended up only getting 3 IV each and ranked 1 program each because other programs were from NY (classic NYC community programs, including in-house). We both did not... The future of oncology, impacted by AI?
I'm PGY-3 and matched to mid academic hematology/oncology fellowship and am excited about that. just curious what are your thoughts on AI's impact on the field of oncology. from my naive experience so far, i think AI can generate good or better treatment plan for most types of malignancy. if that is true, i would imagine the demand and salary for oncologists would go down? Research after fellowship
Resident currently in the fellowship match process here. I want to make an earnest go at academics and try to spend my 18 months of research time in fellowship in a bench or translational lab. If I am not able to get funded, how feasible is it for me to find an academic job where I can have enough time to do a pseudo-postdoc on the side? My concern isn't so much the money, but really maintaining my clinical skills while I do research. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Where do medoncs generate most of their WRVUs?
Hey guys. I’m wondering what activities generate the most wRVUs for a medonc? Is it mostly just the consults/followups? How about giving/monitoring infusions? Other things? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How to find and apply for community jobs
Hi All, I’m a second year fellow at a heavily academic program and have decided that a life in academics is not a good fit. There’s not a lot of resources in my program for identifying and applying for community onc jobs (it’s been awhile since any of the graduating fellows chose the community path and the faculty are focused on mentoring physician scientists/clinical investigators), so I was wondering how/where y’all would recommend starting? Are most opportunities publicly posted or is it... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

The end of community oncology practice
Oncology is about caring for some of the most vulnerable patients in our society but new medicare proposals are just irresponsible Currently, many oncology practices are forced to close their doors because of ASP (Average Sales price) + 6%, a rule passed in 2003 that medicare will only pay a 6% margin on oncology drugs. Many smaller practices are actually spending more on buying the drugs than what they get in return, forcing them to close their doors. Now, medicare wants to bankrupt... The American Society of Hematology on MOC to ABIM

Ranking for PP
Hello all, I'm a current applicant interested in generalist private practice and would appreciate some insight on factors when ranking programs. I wanted to get some input from those working out in the community. -It seems having a fellow's continuity clinic is a big deal if you want to go into PP. Do employers ask about this and will it hurt your competitiveness if your fellowship doesn't have one? Some programs have fellows act as primary for a cohort of patients within attendings'... Recently accepted to medical school.. how competitive is this specialty for DO?
Hi, looking for some advice. I am currently in the med school application cycle and have been accepted by a DO program. A large part of my interest in medicine is having several family members affected by cancer and my best friend's battle with sickle cell anemia. Through shadowing and research experience at a med school this is a specialty I could see myself in. I have a few more interviews, but if granted no more acceptances, will it be an uphill battle for a heme/onc fellowship? Thanks in... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
