The association of neighborhood socioeconomic status with executive function and processing speed in cognitively normal Mexican Americans elders from the Health and Aging Brains Study - Health Disparities cohort
CONCLUSION: Our study revealed that living in an area of higher deprivation was associated with lower cognitive function in MA but not in NHW, which is important to consider in future interventions to slow cognitive decline.PMID:38663362 | DOI:10.1159/000539035 (Source: Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders)

Dementia Care in Rural Appalachia: Multilevel Analysis of Individual and County-level Factors
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Findings suggest that informal support in caring for the person living with dementia enables HCBS use in rural Appalachia. In contrast, limited geographic accessibility and service availability can impede HCBS use in rural regions. Policymakers are urged to allocate direct public funding to service providers to expand service availability in under-resourced rural regions.PMID:38661552 | DOI:10.1093/geront/gnae037 (Source: The Gerontologist)

Research Progress of Eye Movement Analyses and its Detection Algorithms in Alzheimer's Disease
Curr Alzheimer Res. 2024 Apr 24. doi: 10.2174/0115672050300564240416074025. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlzheimer's disease (AD) has been considered one of the most challenging forms of dementia. The earlier the people are diagnosed with AD, the easier it is for doctors to find a treatment. Based on the previous literature summarizing the research results on the relationship between eye movement and AD before 2013, this paper reviewed 34 original eye movements research papers only closely related to AD published in the past ten years and pointed out that the prosaccade (4 papers) and antisaccade (5 papers) tasks, reading...

Hypotensive episodes at 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring predict adverse outcomes in Parkinson ’s disease
ConclusionsThe presence of at least two ABPM-hypotensive episodes independently predicted the development of falls, dementia, and hospitalization, showing a stronger prognostic value than the simple bedside assessment. (Source: Clinical Autonomic Research)

The relationship between participation in leisure activities and incidence of falls in residential aged care
ConclusionsLeisure participation is associated with a lower rate of falls, a key quality indicator by which RACFs are benchmarked and funded in Australia and many other countries. More recognition and attention are needed for the currently underfunded leisure activities in RACFs in future funding arrangement. (Source: PLoS One)

< em > Ginkgo biloba < /em > and Its Chemical Components in the Management of Alzheimer's Disease
Am J Chin Med. 2024 Apr 24:1-42. doi: 10.1142/S0192415X24500277. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a degenerative disease of the central nervous system, remains unclear. The main manifestations of AD include cognitive and behavioral disorders, neuropsychiatric symptoms, neuroinflammation, amyloid plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles. However, current drugs for AD once the dementia stage has been reached only treat symptoms and do not delay progression, and the research and development of targeted drugs for AD have reached a bottleneck. Thus, other treatment options are needed. Bioa...

Communicating visit information to family caregivers: How does method matter? A national survey
This study sought to determine whether mode of receiving clinic visit information (speaking with the patient, attending the visit, or using an after-visit summary [AVS]) was associated with changes in caregiver burden, caregiver preparedness, and the positive aspects of caregiving.METHODS: Cross-sectional web-based survey of a national sample of adult family caregivers. Multiple linear regression models determined associations between communication modes and caregivers' burden, preparedness, and positive aspects of caregiving, adjusting for sociodemographic covariates.RESULTS: Respondents (N = 340) were mostly male (58%), ...
