No Need for Utoxes Anymore
So I'm...ambivalent about the Goldwater Rule, but this is some seriously stretched stuff. Psychiatrist sees signs Biden was medicated for State of the Union performance A psychiatrist who has worked with elderly dementia patients said President Biden exhibited signs of stimulant use to mask cognitive decline in his amped-up, aggressive State of the Union speech on Thursday. www.washingtontimes.com (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Geriatric Unit Dispositions
As I watch the news these days. It dawned on me, if we are culturally accepting of our elected leaders having dementia, perhaps we should expand our geriatric unit dispositions. Expedite this pipeline. Arrange family meetings, at time of admission, for families that have a little bit more resources, to consult with political campaign managers, for their viability to run for office. Just check the box "Campaign Manager Consultation" it will be right under Social Work order, Dietary, and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do Neurologists over diagnose dementia to fill up their panels?
Do you guys think Neurologists over diagnose dementia sometimes, to fill up their panels? I've had a recent run of patients that I've referred, that I personally thought were not all that demented (maybe mild cognitive impairments, MMSE scores in ranging from 23 to 26, which can be very close to normal, especially given their age group > 75 yo). Patients had no complaints. Family members were upset b/c of short-term memory problems, which I explained could be perfectly normal and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Reasonable accommodations Re: Patient transfers/getting people walking
I limp a little when I walk. I shouldn't be trusted to support an unsteady person while walking. I could help a person up with my left hand, but it's painful when the right one is squeezed too hard and I want to avoid that. I ran into this the other week when a strong male patient with dementia squeezed my right hand really hard and it really hurt. Is getting someone else to help me with getting patients out of bed or to walk people considered to be a reasonable accommodation? I don't... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
