Functionalized liposomes as a potential drug delivery systems for colon cancer treatment: A systematic review
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 30:132023. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.132023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTColon cancer is one of the lethal diseases in the world with approximately 700,000 fatalities annually (Abdulzehra et al., 2023 [1]). Nowadays, due to the side effects of existing methods in the treatment of colon cancer such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the use of targeted nanocarriers in cancer treatment has received wide attention, and among them, especially liposomes have been studied a lot. Based on this, anti-tumor drugs hidden in targeted active liposomes can selectively act on cancer cells. In this syste...

Elevated serum homocysteine levels associated with poor recurrence-free and overall survival in patients with colorectal cancer
This study aimed to evaluate the significance of homocysteine (HCY) levels in predicting recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. This retrospective study involved 1272 CRC patients. The risk of mortality increased with increasing HCY levels in CRC patients. The optimal HCY cutoff value in CRC patients was 15.2 μmol/L. The RFS (45.8% vs. 60.5%, p < 0.001) and OS (48.2% vs. 63.2%, p < 0.001) of patients with high HCY levels were significantly lower than those of patients with low HCY levels. Patients with high HCY levels were older, male, had large tumours, high ca...

Apoptotic effect of 5-fluorouracil-doxorubicin combination on colorectal cancer cell monolayers and spheroids
CONCLUSION: The results indicated that the 5-FU + DOX combination therapy induces apoptosis and renders 5-FU and DOX more effective at lower concentrations compared to their alone use. This study reveals promising results in reducing the potential side effects of treatment by enabling the use of lower drug doses.PMID:38698270 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09562-x (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Longitudinal associations of diurnal rest-activity rhythms with fatigue, insomnia, and health-related quality of life in survivors of colorectal cancer up to 5 years post-treatment
CONCLUSIONS: In the first five years after CRC treatment, adhering to a generally more active (mesor) and consistent (24-h autocorrelation) RAR, with a pronounced peak activity (amplitude) and a marked difference between daytime and nighttime activity (dichotomy index) was found to be associated with lower fatigue, lower insomnia, and a better HRQoL. Future intervention studies are needed to investigate if restoring RAR among survivors of CRC could help to alleviate symptoms of fatigue and insomnia while enhancing their HRQoL.TRIAL REGISTRATION: EnCoRe study NL6904 ( https://www.onderzoekmetmensen.nl/ ).PMID:38698447 | DOI...

Curvilinear catheter implantation in HDR prostate brachytherapy: feasibility study
CONCLUSION: This work demonstrates the feasibility of using tendon-driven active curvilinear catheter implantation in prostate to improve the outcomes of HDR-BT via improved radiation dose distribution to the prostate and reduced toxicity to the OARs.PMID:38695825 | DOI:10.1002/mp.17113 (Source: Health Physics)

Evaluating complete response prediction rates in locally advanced rectal cancer with different radiomics segmentation approaches
CONCLUSION: Although the highest AUC result is obtained from the tumor segmentation, the highest accuracy and sensitivity are detected with tumor+mesorectum segmentation and these findings align with previous studies, suggesting that the mesorectum contains valuable insights for CR. The lowest result is obtained with CTV segmentation. More studies with mesorectum and pelvic nodal regions included in segmentation are needed.PMID:38694706 | PMC:PMC11061551 | DOI:10.3389/pore.2024.1611744 (Source: Pathology Oncology Research)

Individualized prediction of conditional survival for colorectal signet-ring cell carcinoma patients
CONCLUSIONS: The probability of achieving 5-year OS and 5-year CSS in colorectal SRCC patients improved gradually with additional time. Association of healthy diet score and adiposity with risk of colorectal cancer: findings from the UK Biobank prospective cohort study
ConclusionAdiposity-mediated effects were limited in the link between dietary patterns and CRC incidence, implying that solely addressing adiposity may not sufficiently reduce CRC risk. Interventions, such as improving dietary quality in people with adiposity or promoting weight control in those with unhealthy eating habits, may provide an effective strategy to reduce CRC risk. Addressing Colorectal Cancer Disparities in Unhoused Populations: A Call for Equitable Access and Compassionate Care
Clin Colon Rectal Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0044-1786531Housing is essential for health. Unhoused individuals have markedly worse health status than the general population culminating in higher rates of premature mortality. Cancer is a leading cause of death in older unhoused adults. Caring for unhoused patients at risk for or with colorectal cancer poses challenges at every stage of oncologic care: prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. These challenges result in later stages at diagnosis and worse overall survival. Health systems can work to advance health equity in colorectal cancer in unhoused patients b...
