Correlation between Pain and Anal Defecation Function in Postoperative Patients with Colorectal Cancer and Related Factors Affecting Patients' Prognosis
CONCLUSION: LARS is strongly associated with the patient's pain level, and factors such as anastomotic position <5 cm from the anal verge, preoperative radiotherapy, anastomotic fistula, high VAS level, and low MTV level will increase the risk of concurrent LARS in patients.PMID:38684502 | DOI:10.62713/aic.3173 (Source: Annali Italiani di Chirurgia)

Implications of Pretreatment Serum Carcinoembryonic Antigen Levels and Perineural Invasion with Staging, Prognosis, and Management in Stage I-III Colon Cancer after Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study in the SEER Database
CONCLUSION: For postoperative patients with stage I-III colon cancer, our study indicated that the CP stage is a significant prognostic factor for CSS, which deserves more clinical attention. It's worth noting that including the CP stage in the AJCC TNM staging system of colon carcinoma is beneficial to the survival prediction and clinical treatment.PMID:38684496 | DOI:10.62713/aic.3296 (Source: Annali Italiani di Chirurgia)

OSW-1 triggers necroptosis in colorectal cancer cells through the RIPK1/RIPK3/MLKL signaling pathway facilitated by the RIPK1-p62/SQSTM1 complex
CONCLUSION: We propose that OSW-1 can induce necroptosis through the RIPK1/RIPK3/MLKL signaling pathway, and that this effect is mediated by the RIPK1-p62/SQSTM1 complex, in CRC cells. These results provide a theoretical foundation for the use of OSW-1 in the clinical treatment of CRC.PMID:38681991 | PMC:PMC11045482 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i15.2155 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Critical updates in neuroendocrine tumors: Version 9 American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system for gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors
CA Cancer J Clin. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.3322/caac.21840. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system for all cancer sites, including gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs), is meant to be dynamic, requiring periodic updates to optimize AJCC staging definitions. This entails the collaboration of experts charged with evaluating new evidence that supports changes to each staging system. GEP-NETs are the second most prevalent neoplasm of gastrointestinal origin after colorectal cancer. Since publication of the AJCC eighth edition, the World Health Organization has ...

The Role of Delirium on Short- and Long-Term Postoperative Outcomes Following Major Gastrointestinal Surgery for Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative delirium occurred in one in 50 patients undergoing surgical resection of a digestive tract cancer. Delirium was linked to a reduced likelihood of achieving an optimal postoperative outcome, increased ICU utilization, higher expenditures, and a worse long-term prognosis. Initiatives to prevent delirium are vital to improve postoperative outcomes among cancer surgery patients.PMID:38683304 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15358-x (Source: Ann Oncol)

Evaluation of the Combined Effect of Caffeine and 5-Fluorouracil on Colorectal Cancer Cell Lines
In this study, initially HCT116 and HEK293 cell lines were cultured as cancer and normal cells, respectively. These cell lines were then evaluated for cytotoxicity, induction of apoptosis, and rate of cell migration. All data were analyzed by statistical methods.RESULTS: The results indicated that a combination of caffeine and 5-FU augmented their cytotoxicity in HCT116 cells but reduced cytotoxicity in HEK293 cells. No reduction was observed in the migration of HCT116 cells that were treated with caffeine or a combination of caffeine and 5-FU. Also, it seems that caffeine reverses the apoptotic effect of 5-FU in HCT116 ce...

LncRNA ANRIL Promotes Glucose Metabolism and Proliferation of Colon Cancer in a High-Glucose Environment and is Associated with Worse Outcome in Diabetic Colon Cancer Patients
CONCLUSIONS: A high-glucose environment can increase the tumor-promoting effect of ANRIL. ANRIL can promote glucose metabolism and colon cancer proliferation by downregulating miR-186-5p with subsequent upregulation of glycolysis enzymes expression and inhibition of apoptosis.PMID:38679999 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2024.25.4.1371 (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Hopelessness and Social Support among Cancer Patients in Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study suggest that the levels of hopelessness in cancer patients are moderate, and the levels of social support received by participants are high. In addition, the relationship between the levels of hopelessness and the levels of social support received is inversely proportional.PMID:38679998 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2024.25.4.1363 (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Baicalein triggers ferroptosis in colorectal cancer cells via blocking the JAK2/STAT3/GPX4 axis
This study demonstrates that ferroptosis contributes to baicalein-induced anti-CRC activity through blockade of the JAK2/STAT3/GPX4 signaling pathway, which provides evidence for the therapeutic application of baicalein against CRC.PMID:38684798 | DOI:10.1038/s41401-024-01258-z (Source: Acta Pharmacologica Sinica)
