Activation of M2 macrophage autophagy by rapamycin increases the radiosensitivity of colorectal cancer xenografts
CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, autophagy-activated M2 supernatant can downregulate the expression of the antiapoptotic genes Livin and Survivin in CRC xenografts, improving the radiosensitivity of CRC by inducing apoptosis in combination with radiotherapy and inhibiting the growth of transplanted tumors.PMID:38687942 | DOI:10.4103/jcrt.jcrt_215_23 (Source: Cell Research)

Estimated impact and value of blood-based colorectal cancer screening at varied adherence compared with stool-based screening
Conclusions: Triennial screening with mt-sDNA resulted in better clinical outcomes at a lower cost compared with the modeled blood-based test even at perfect adherence, supporting application of blood-based tests only as a secondary screening option.PMID:38686394 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2349467 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Synthesis and cytotoxicity of novel 6,8,9-Trisubstituted purine analogs against liver cancer cells
Bioorg Med Chem Lett. 2024 Apr 28:129775. doi: 10.1016/j.bmcl.2024.129775. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA series of novel 6-(substituted phenyl piperazine)-8-(4-substituted phenyl)-9-cyclopentyl purines, 10-51, were synthesized by a four-step synthesis, achieving an overall yield of about 43 %. The reaction conditions were effectively optimized, and the final products were obtained with high purity and yield in all synthesis steps. The synthesized nucleobases were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxic activities on selected human cancer cell lines (HUH7 (liver), HCT116 (colon), and MCF7 (breast)) using the Sulforhodamine...

Colorectal Cancer Incidence in Iran Based on Sex, Age, and Geographical Regions: A Study of 2014-2017 and Projected Rates to 2025
CONCLUSION: The anticipated increase in CRC incidence in Iran emphasizes the need for additional studies to better identify risk factors. Furthermore, implementing screening programs is recommended for individuals at a higher risk of CRC, including men, the elderly population, and those residing in regions with a notable prevalence of CRC.PMID:38685843 | DOI:10.34172/aim.2024.26 (Source: Archives of Iranian Medicine)

AXL receptor as an emerging molecular target in colorectal cancer
Drug Discov Today. 2024 Apr 27:104005. doi: 10.1016/j.drudis.2024.104005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAXL receptor tyrosine kinase (AXL) is a receptor tyrosine kinase whose aberrant expression has recently been associated with colorectal cancer (CRC), contributing to tumor growth, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), increased invasiveness, metastatic spreading, and the development of drug resistance. In this review we summarize preclinical data, the majority of which are limited to recent years, convincingly linking the AXL receptor to CRC. These findings support the value of targeting AXL with molecules in drug dis...

Implementation of Health IT for Cancer Screening in US Primary Care: Scoping Review
CONCLUSIONS: There are substantial evidence gaps regarding the effectiveness of HIT-based interventions, especially those targeting guideline-concordant breast and colorectal cancer screening in primary care. Even less is known about how to enhance the adoption of technologies that have been proven effective in supporting breast, colorectal, or cervical cancer screening. Research is needed to ensure that the potential benefits of effective HIT-based interventions equitably reach diverse primary care populations.PMID:38687595 | DOI:10.2196/49002 (Source: Cancer Control)

Determinants of early-onset colorectal cancer: a multicenter case-control study in Iran
CONCLUSION: Early-onset CRC was related to the intake of vegetables, vitamin D and red meat in Iran. Early-onset rectum cancer was associated with regular opium use. Family history was associated with early CRC and early rectum cancer, particularly below the age of 35.PMID:38687254 | DOI:10.1097/CEJ.0000000000000888 (Source: Cancer Control)

Encapsulation of copper phenanthroline within horse spleen apoferritin: characterisation, cytotoxic activity and ability to retain temozolomide
RSC Adv. 2024 Apr 29;14(20):14008-14016. doi: 10.1039/d3ra07430g. eCollection 2024 Apr 25.ABSTRACTProtein capsules are promising drug delivery vehicles for cancer research therapies. Apoferritin (AFt) is a self-assembling 12 nm diameter hollow nanocage with many desirable features for drug delivery, however, control of drug retention inside the protein cage remains challenging. Here we report the encapsulation of copper(ii)-1,10-phenanthroline (Cu(phen)) within the horse spleen AFt (HSAFt) nanocage, by diffusion of the metal through the pores between the protein subunits. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the forma...
